Great video, I aways loved the look if the briefcase. A while ago you mentioned that you were going to do a video on setting up and calibrating crt and pvm/bvm monitors. Please tell me this is still happening.
If they ever do that episode, I hope they provide separate info for both PAL and NTSC. From what I've heard they use different test cards to calibrate. Edit: It would be a very useful episode, as I currently have a Saturn and the image is slightly shifted to the left, cutting off some info like part of the timer in Virtual On
Unfortunately, I don't have any other cables and I can't buy any currently. If it helps, I'm using an RGB SCART cable that came with the console and as far as I know it is using sync over composite
I always wanted one of those. I remember seeing one soon after I bought my Duo in a magazine. I thought it was a different redesign and was blown away... only to be completely wrong.
Wow, this was a great video! Getting ISOs to run on original hardware is important for very long term preservation, but I love seeing options to still use original CD hardware and original CDs, while they still work.
Might pick one of these boards up. One of the first mods I ever did was adding a SCART socket to an Interface Unit. It works pretty well, and I don't see any noise, but my Framemeister has a hard time keeping sync when its connected through a SCART switch.
Will you two be doing a bigger PC Engine/TurboGrafx16 video covering all the different solutions and models like other consoles in the RGB Master Class series?
I have a briefcase and just have the pc engine rgb modded. I just take the audio out of the interface unit. Only problem with this is having to unplug the scart lead to put the lid back on. I never use it anyway tbh as I have a supergrafx and super SD System 3.
The way you feel about the briefcase is how I feel about the core grafx 2 combo, love the look of it but apparently the cd player is notoriously faulty so its not worth it.
Note for anyone thinking about the jailbar fix: it does not produce the same results across PC Engine systems! The PCE community has recognized this, and I personally have done the fix on 4 separate systems. Of the 4, it fixed the issue on only 2 systems- the white PC Engine, and the Turbo Duo. Results may vary!
I was waiting for this! But too short for me, my super CD rom2 modded in rgb come at Monday, I can't wait to try Dracula x in true rgb with the framemeister!!!!! Thank you for the video to my favorite channel! Long life to you
Have a Core model I bought with an RGB mod a couple of years ago. The plug is now a Genesis mod 1 looking plug. With scart cables to framemeister it looks amazing. Was holding hope for the HD Retrovision Genesis component cable working but the picture is a mess. Can't always be lucky. I really wish the PCE / TG16 could have been the third pillar back in the day.
It's hard to catch Voultar's RGB pieces if you're not from USA :( even he have already an official distributor and i say that because he doesn't receive Voultar's boards or he receive some but in very very very small batch :( . Thanks for his work i'm now addicted to have a clean signal on my consoles ! Have a great Sunday people !
Huh, the noise issues you are seeing are basically identical to the problems I've been having with my TG16 with just an AV Driver in it. It seems to be mostly better now, but it's definitely frustrating. Been tempted to just dump the whole system out of frustration, but then I'd have to find a good deal on a CoreGrafx and deal with all this mod frustration all over again...
I would be careful in presenting Voultar's as the only truly clean solution for an RGB-modded IFU-30. There's actually a Japanese modder that has been offering for a while now noiseless units (as far as I can tell with my own testing). We actually should take it for granted that the Japanese retro modding scene has its own developments that we hardly know about, if at all, since there's so little communication among the Western and Japanese scenes (largely due to language barriers). A big example is with the NESRGB. Up to today it's pretty much universal wisdom that to install the NESRGB on a Famicom you have to give up the eject function. The Japanese scene actually developed a solution at least two years ago for a specialized board that allows the NESRGB to be installed on the bottom side of the Motherboard, preserving the eject function. They also have another specialized AV board that allows you tu use a Multi-out connection and SNES/SFC SCART/JP-21 cables with the Famicom.
Peredonov Agreed. Also more than Voultar are qualified here in the states. I can not recommend enough Keith Courage from PCEngineFX. You can find him on facebook as well. Not only does he do just as good a job, but has always answered every one of my questions in a extremely timely manner. Something that Voultar has not done in my experience.
He's talking about this: www.retromodwiki.com/wiki/AV_Driver_Install. That's the install process for a TG16, though. On my unit (a TG16, not an IFU), I found I had a lot of these same noise problems, though.
The 2600 doesn't have a whole lot of options. RF by default which is terrible and the Secam models had a terrible RGB scart output. You can either replace the RF module with a diy composite output (requires a transistor and 2 resistors if I'm correct) or get your 2600 modded with Tim Worthington's RGB kit for the best possible output.
@Try Check out IKEA's Isberget tablet stand in white. It shows off my beautiful IFU by tilting it up every so slightly, while allowing it to be fully functional. And the color matches perfectly!
Nice! One thing I'm curious about is where the connector goes. Your old mod had you drilling a hole in the back of the IF unit, but I think replacing the composite connectors on the side would look cleaner (and who cares about composite if you have RGB?).
Besides the kits, is Voultar going to offer installation service for pc-egine (duo-R) as well? It's currently showing $0.00 on his website (out of stock).
Regarding the "power ripple" -- I think I have been experiencing this on a few different CRTs. However, I can't really tell what whats going on in the video. What I normally see is "ripples/waves" moving across at a diagonal through dark black or blue areas of the image. Is this normal to experience on a CRT?
What you guys think about the Super SD System 3 for the pc engine? I am tempted getting it. Some people told me just to get a modded duo. but that is a hell of alot of cd's to rip and i hear the process of burning them can be difficult. They told me the Super SD System 3 has problems and the rgb isn't that grate. I hear voltor and some other guy is making a rgb chip to fix most of the problems. Maybe i can get one modded. But that will increase the expense. Really from the video's i watched from you guys it looks decent. I don't know what the problem is with rgb? I am stumped why people are giving the thing a such bad rep. It's really a big expense for me if it ends up not as good. In my head for something that expensive they shouldn't just done the whole system instead of a add on. Just playing pc engine on the pie3b for now. I feel like beetle fast has very good latency, well not as bad which I want or pcengine are just made better then some nintendo platformers which are sensitive.
One question, if I decide to go with the Interfase the first classic PC engine, The Coregraft 1, The Coregraft 2, wich one will shows best quality? It will be the same results with the IFU? What about if I bought the Supergraft?
[Try4ce] I don't know for sure, but I believe the results would be the same. There is an additional mod you can do to the PCE unit itself that helps remove jailbars, but I don't have that done. I assume the other styles can also have that mod done.
I don't have a turbo-duo, only turbografx-CD which has composite output. Is there no rgb mod for that cd unit? Because of it, I can play Turbografx-16 games with composite. But combined with the CD unit, I'd like to be able to play CD units as well, but without the DUo. Is there no rgb mod for it? If not, what do you suggest?
[Try4ce] I don't know if people RGB mod those, to be honest. If you don't necessarily feel a need to use real CDs, then the Super SD System 3 or Super HD System 3 are viable options for both loading games and getting RGB/HDMI quality. We have videos on both of those. MiSTer is another super interesting choice for TurboGrafx games because it actually has a color accuracy advantage that all RGB solutions for real hardware miss out on. Without going too much into detail, the PC Engine generates RGB and composite colors a bit differently, and the RGB colors aren't entirely accurate. The MiSTer is one of the few ways to correct for this and get RGB quality. I've heard tell of an S-Video mod that is being refined soon - this would have the color accuracy advantage, but still be better quality than composite.
@@mylifeingaming I found this video where he plugs an hd-retrovision plug on it with the cd unit and even tests the cd games and it works. I imagine it doesn't matter. You can connect the cd add-on to the turbografx-16 with rgb input and it works on both. So peep it if you're curious, then test it out yourself whenever you can. :) th-cam.com/video/4O1SIETOi80/w-d-xo.html
I finally found my beloved TurboDuo and all it has is a composite out... Dreading this in the modern age. In the US SCART connectors does not do anything for us or me, as I have no supporting hardware for it. So how in the world do I get S-Video or higher out of this ?
[Try4ce] If you had a DIN installed in your system that was designed for a Genesis 2 pinout, you could use the HD Retrovision cables to convert RGB to component.
Thanks for the reply. My system is factory right now, no 3rd party hacks... Just looking to get better than composite out of it... In fact just about to hop into some Lords of Thunder (one of my all time fav shooters)
considering the combined cost of a turbo everdrive, CD unit, and any maintenance you may have to do on the CD unit, it's honestly a pretty great price point! it's still expensive, yeah, but it's very worth it for what it provides.
You guys are both great, but I have to side with Coury on this one: the Duo-R is the way to go! Love my modded Duo-R! (Also, +1 for Voultar, he's done work for me in the past and it's been great!)
On the Stick Yeah it's up to preference. I used to think the Duo-R was the one I wanted. Now I think the black Duo system is the best looking of the two. I ended up buying the Briefcase unit myself due to still wanting to see the little PCE in all its glory. That and I think it's just more interesting setup.
At the time I got my Duo-R, there were known issues with the black Duo. Now when people get mods done, they usually recap the system anyways, so that doesn't matter as much, but I like the curved shell of the R/RX more than the squared-off Duo. I don't really like the briefcase just because I think it looks cobbled together, whereas the Duo systems have a singular design, you know? But, ultimately, there's no wrong way to enjoy the PC Engine!
Whomever is thumbs downing these vids are assclowns. These folks single-handedly make some of the BEST, MOST INFORMATIVE gaming videos on YT. Keep up the great work, guys! 🙌🙌🙌
Jason Carmona Whoever* is thumbs downing, the video in this sentence is the object and the person is the subject acting on the video. Who refers to the subject and whom refers to the object. A trick to remember is to replace the who/whom with he/him. If it's he it's who and if it's him it's whom (a trick to remember that is that both him and whom end in m). So, he is thumbs downing the video = who.
Since other people are shitting on Voultar in this video's comments, I'm going to do the same. I watched several streams of his about a month or so ago demonstrating that sexy beast System SD 3 and decided to order one for myself. Well since that time, people like Voultar decided to get involved and offer "tips" and their "knowledge" which in turn caused this company to go from making a sexy beast to a milf in fishnets. Now the real problem with all of this is that it takes some time to get this milf to be legal, I mean mailed out to customers. So basically, long stories get short - because Voultar decided to give advice to a company that listened, I'm not playing Akumajou Dracula X. I hope he can sleep at night.
[Try4ce] The noise actually was pretty bad, but TH-cam compression makes it harder to see. That's why I rendered this episode at 4K, to get access to higher bitrates on TH-cam. It's the best we could do.
This console needs a games collection on Nintendo Switch and PS4 that could have all the games it had since getting both games and the two part consoles is a pain in the ass unless you see them in your local flea market
Nice idea but the PC Engine / Turbo catalogue is too niche for risk averse publishers to use as a the base for a modern retro release. Honestly I'm impressed to see it get so much shine on youtube (especially from dudes who were children when it was alive) - but I'm not complaining. Also, Konami own Hudson IP / assets nowadays so good luck there.
omg that pulp fiction clip
Just going to follow suit and say that Pulp Fiction clip was TOO GOOD. Excellent job.

That pulp fiction edit was just perfect.

OWNED!
NANI? 2:27
Does Voultar pay you guys in hot glue and old capacitors with all the plugs you give him for his mod work? 😜
VOULTAR!VOULTAR!VOULTAR! 😉
shows two identical pictures. claims huge difference in noise and quality. excellent work. #emperorsclothes
[Try4ce] The noise actually was pretty bad, but TH-cam compression makes it harder to see. That's why I rendered this episode at 4K, to get access to higher bitrates on TH-cam. It's the best we could do.
fair enough. sorry for the sass. but yeah i really looked for what you were talking about at the highest youtube setting and couldn't see anything.
To be honest, I cant see any noticable difference
So glad I’m ok with emulating because I’d be broke trying to keep up with all this stuff lol
Sorry but the American Turbo16 is way better looking than the PCEngine. The American Turbo Duo even more so.
Sadly collecting for the pce is expensive so ill just stick with the emulator on my pi lol.
