Cycling England: Hadrian's Wall to the Cliffs of Dover // World Bicycle Touring Episode 27

- After crossing the Scottish Borders region, we entered England in Cumbria to ride the Hadrian's Way Cycle Path to Newcastle. From Newcastle we headed into the Yorkshire Wolds area for some accidental hike-a-bike singletrack that was well worth the struggle. We continued on to the Fens, Rochester, Boston, Cambridge, London, Canterbury and eventually made our way to Dover and the ferry to Dunkirk where we will continue our journey in France and the low countries.
We probably didn't pick the most scenic route through England as we were focused on getting to Dover as fast as possible due to time constraints, but we ended up discovering a ton of beautiful gravel towpaths and bridleways along National Cycle Route 1.

Attempting to wild camp in England is pretty hard core tbf! Well done. The heckling from youngsters (typical little 💩’s) especially around the suburbs is not unusual I’m afraid. The self-depreciation is a full time British past-time …. Don’t take it to heart, it’s part of our culture and our humour. What you’ve achieved cycling through the UK is seriously amazing! Well done guys 👍🏻

Thats possibly putting it politely. We certainly have no shortage of them in this once great country of ours.
To be honest i avoid urban areas as much as possible when on a bike packing trip. Not always possible i know.
One trick that i often use, if i know i have to cycle through an urban area, i try and do it in the morning. As most of the D.Y.P won't get out of bed until first thing in the afternoon.
Hope this is useful to you and any other bike packers reading this.
That's good advice to follow when possible, I think all of our negative encounters happened in the early evening.
Massive respect to you both. England and English/British people have had for decades self depreciation, we are taught it at school and educational establishments, as well as business and through parenting from a very young age. We are experts at it. 🤣😝 Hopefully you have both got some solice from your expereince.

Wow, you went from a 2,000-year-old Roman ruin to modern glittering architecture in what seemed like one day. Who wouldn't want to tour England. And that map showing your accumulated trip is a great idea--keep showing us that as you move along.

Those "hecklers" are exactly the kind of people giving england a bad name at the moment, can almost guarentee it would have been a group of lads in tracksuits outside a shop acting hard

It’s not the groups of teenagers that give this country a bad name, it’s the extreme right wing government that has kept the working class poor and given them no hope for the future through Brexit and with destructive economic policies. They need you to hate hoodie wearing teens or immigrants or cyclists, anything to distract from their wicked, incompetent and corrupt behaviour.

I am enjoying your view of my country England. A different perspective from a tourist is always very valuable. I am so sorry you had the encounter with the youths. I am afraid I come across that in some suburbs. I just ignore them and try and avoid those areas as much as possible. Rural England is just beautiful as you will find. Sorry to hear you came across some heckling from yoofs, this could’ve easily been avoided if you’d took a different route to avoid these areas, Durham has some amazing biking paths, can be hilly though. I'm sure you edited out much of the bad parts, but you certainly made your route look very idyllic and beautiful. I've cycled from Morecambe (East coast) to Bridlington (way of the roses route) and walked the Hadrians wall route. Our National cycle routes can be very hit and miss NCN has plenty of good bits, but I'm sure you found can also divert you onto barely navigable paths and some dodgy estates! Good you missed some of the bigger hills in the Pennines. Also Devon and Cornwall have some surprisingly brutal hills. Stay safe on your travels.

Great video as always. Reading yours and your partner's body language (and comparing them to other video's), I get the distinct feeling, you didnt enjoy cycling through England. It's a shame...
You're not wrong, England was one of our least favorite places to ride in Europe. We're definitely mostly to blame though, we chose a flat and somewhat boring route, and we were on a deadline for one of the few periods of the whole trip so we felt rushed. We were also stressed out about illegally wild camping after leaving the legal wild camping of Scotland, and it was quite hot in England at the time. Our whole strategy for budgeting this trip meant that we really could not spend money on lodging, even paid campgrounds. We really enjoyed the towns and the history, but we just didn't feel as though it was a great bicycle touring destination, more of a place to just get through.
That said, the first tour I (Andrew) ever did was a short 7 day loop starting in Sherbourne, riding to Glastonbury, Bath, Taunton, and Yeovil, and it gave me the inspiration that led me to eventually embark on this around the world tour, so I have a special place in my heart for cycle touring in England. We'd love to go back one day and ride through more of southwest England, Wales and the Lakes District. As an American who is obsessed with history, I'm always blown away by the appreciation for the past in England and the sheer age of everything!
Well done to both of you. You have cycled such a long way and wild camped. Sorry to here you were heckled by youngsters and had some dumb questions. We think what you are doing is great! 👍and really enjoyed watching. We live in York, England and wish our infrastructure was more cycle friendly.

Was hoping to see some of the riding i know in Lincolnshire, and the bits around Boston i know well. Fun fact for you, the Pilgrim Fathers originally tried to set off from Boston in 1607, so they would have seen St Botolph's church too. Surprised you didn't visit Lincoln, which your 16th president's family is named after.
I enjoyed the naiveite of assuming Yorkshire would be flat outside of York! There's a reason so many of Britain's top cyclists come from Yorkshire, there's an awful lot of hill!

What is this wall, I need to look up history of it? Bike touring in England looks amazing but I would be concerned of weather, least I don't have to worry about that here in Florida, but it's all part of adventure. 👍
It's Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans in 122 AD. The weather can definitely be challenging but there are lots of interesting towns and landmarks to see!
Was the entirety of your riding post-Newcastle on route 1? It looks fantastic!
I'm from Berwick-upon-Tweed and I lived in Newcastle for a while, so I know the section in-between those really well - particularly the section along the cliffs near Berwick - but I've never ridden the bit further South and I'm kinda kicking myself!
What you said about thinking you'd have trouble wild-camping due to England being quite populated seems to be a pretty common thought. While travelling Australia I've had tons of people tell me that there must be no open spaces in the UK and it must be super claustrophobic due to it's size and population compared to Australia, which is obviously VAST and relatively empty. It's actually quite amazing how much open space there is in the UK - especially up in the highlands etc....

Yes, we were primarily on Route 1 until Wisbech, where we veered off toward Cambridge. The section through North Moors and along the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough was a big highlight, and there were lots of nice paths further south too.
We were definitely concerned about camping at first, but we found some surprisingly good spots! Probably not as easy as Australia, but once you get outside of the urban centers there's plenty of beautiful countryside.
Virtually all of it is private though - you can do it stealthily and probably more landowners than you think will allow you if you ask. But a lot will treat you like you are going to rob the nearby properties or burn them down.

I've been really enjoying your videos, they're superbly made and the picture and sound quality are really amazing! Do you mind explaining the hw you're using? I see you have both GoPro and an SLR camera with additional mic and 2 lenses so I'm confused which of these takes both sound and picture quality so good AND can be used while riding. @@MrJx4000 I'm aware of the gear they have. I was asking which gear is used for which kind of shooting.
Basically any shot where the camera is moving is shot using the GoPro Hero 8 with the media mod and homemade windscreen. If it's especially windy we'll use the Rode lavalier mic hooked up to the audio input on the gopro media mod. Most of the riding shots are done with the gopro in one hand so that we can better frame the shot, but if it's a very steep downhill we'll mount the gopro to our handlebars. It's probably not the safest way to shoot video and ride but it allows us to pan and compose shots in a way that fixing the camera to the bike or helmet doesn't allow.
We use the Fuji Xt4 for all the stationary shots, usually with the Rode shotgun mic. Occasionally we'll use the internal mics on the xt4 but they sound pretty terrible. We are eventuality going to put together a video about our camera gear and how we use it, we've really put it to the test with thousands of miles of bumpy riding and all sorts of weather conditions. Those trail path entrance unwelcoming steelbars that English councils are so proud of and put them on every path are absolutely so annoying and stressful and user unfriendly.Speaking as a local
Yeah I can see how they'd sound like a good idea in theory but it was really frustrating to have to constantly stop and maneuver through them.

Middlesborough and its surrounding neighborhoods are a horrible place, one of the worst places in England
Britain is plagued by miscreant behaviour, particularly in low income, post industrial towns and cities. Yob culture you might call it, it goes hand in hand with territoriality. It's tied to the same mentality that delivered us Brexit. It's a national embarrassment, but at the same time I know of more that one incident where young Brits wandered into the wrong 'hood in the US and were killed for the mistake.
I very much doubt that "miscreant yobs" bothered to vote in the referendum.
