I think Edmund was playing with them while being the Count, he was curious to how Albert was, was he was like his Fernand? It was until later that the young lad had courage.
It's a nice sentiment, but I think Albert was merely a means to an end. A way to further gain the trust of the Mondego household and more importantly, Mercedes' trust. Remember: at this point in the story, Dantes' goal is to utterly destroy both Fernand and Mercedes, so it's difficult to accept that he would have any warm feelings for whom he believed to be their son.
That is the sweetest smile on Albert's face at the end! Basically the 19th-century equivalent of the latest rock star came to his party and told everyone, "This is the coolest guy I've ever met."

What I really love about this is that Edmond has genuine sympathy for Albert and doesn’t have a ‘sins of the father’ mentality here. He sees how disappointed he is that his father(as far as he knows) is not there to give him his birthday toast so he gives a justified reason to him why he didn’t show up to give him a good birthday. He still feels rage towards Mercedes as when she silently thanks him he turns away without acknowledging it showing us that he really did it just for Albert. This shows us that beneath all the hatred, Edmond never truly lost his kindness.
This is my favorite scene in the ENTIRE movie bc so much is happening and almost all of it is nonverbal acting and acted AMAZINGLY. Mercedes walks to the table clearly upset for her son but sits down and pulls herself together. Albert looks expectantly at his mother, silently asking where father is. Mercedes tries and fails to gives him a reasuring smile, but albert is crushed as he understands that his father cant be bothered to come to his birthday. Edmund looks between the two seeing that something is going on but its not until mercedes stands up that u see him understand, b4 she even speaks, and empathizes with both of them. When the count first starts u see that albert knows hes lying but is touched nonetheless. And is genuinely moved as the count finishes. Then you get mercedes quitely mouthed "thank you" that edmund humbly brushes off AND THEN THE GRAND REVEAL where he start unconsciously fiddling with his hair and mercedes KNOWS. Brilliant brilliant scene

I worked at scout camp this past summer. At the start of each week, our camp program director would recite this speech before the whole camp. He does this and makes this gesture all while being gripped by the insatiable desire for revenge. We're left to wonder for the rest of the film if he does this to build stronger ties for his deception, or if he can't stand to see injustice done, even on those he means to destroy.

Il protagonista,un cuore puro con un grande amore da vivere ,tradito da tutti ma soprattutto dall' avido amico( che tutt' altro è in realtà) invidioso della purezza e buoni sentimenti del protagonista,con l' inganno,lo fà arrestare con l' accusa di alto tradimento( galeotta fù la lettera di Napolene,mai letta - farsi ambasciatori senza conoscere il contenuto di un documento o altro,può essere usato contro) di questo film,emerge l' ingiustizia in tutte le sue forme,l' inganno,l' invidia,la meschinità ,la bassezza umana,solo per ottenere tutto,senza conquistare niente . Persino l' amore .Chi più del giovane protagonista,potrebbe essere spinto all' odio più feroce verso l' umanitá, e chi lo ha tradito? Un giovane che si trova incatenato nel sottosuolo di una prigione,privato del futuro ,libertà,ingiustamente. Ecco che,nonostante la lunga durata degli anni di prigionia(quelli,non torneranno mai più) il fato o giustizia del cielo,ci mette lo zampino. Significativa l' amicizia che s' instaurerà,tra un vero reo,l' anziano religioso colto,e un giovane innocente. Gli errori fatti,daranno un senso ,almeno con questo dono .Indurre l' altro a non soccombere . Il risultato,e la prova della riuscita,si svelerà poi,nella futura libertà. La scelta ,con una mano sul cuore. Ora che il protagonista è finalmente libero,con il tesoro in mano ( svelato il nascondiglio ed offerto dall' anziano frate) un altra identità, per rientrare in società,la ricerca di un complice - amico fedele,(perchè in due o più,si lavora meglio ,aiutandosi. Buttare giù il boccone amaro,trattenere l' emozione nel rivedere il grande amore,estirpato con l' inganno( e prole) Non era ancora il momento giusto,per la verità.Come si comporterà il coraggioso e non più sfortunato protagonista? Annegherà nel desiderio di vendetta,più che comprensibile o sceglierà di rinascere??? (aiutato dall' agio unico vantaggio ) Libero arbitrio..e l' amore davanti,guiderà cuore e mente,di un nuovo uomo che,solo allora,comprenderà ,il vantaggio del non vendicarsi con tutti usando il perdono ,tramandato dall' insegnamento del reo frate.*** Ma questa storia così drammatica e coinvolgente ,piena d' imprevisti e bassezze dell' umanità,fà riflettere molto, e molte persone.
