There really was an Abbe Jose Custodio de Faria, who was a pioneer of hypnosis. He died in 1819. Oh and BTW he spent some time in the Chateau d'If. He was released and became a Professor of Philosophy afterwards.
This was the real man behind Dumas' fictional character, Abbe Faria.

Wonderful little added moment that reveals so much of what Edmond has endured: He touches the chair and gestures to the Abbe with a "May I?" expression. Abbe's shrug answers: "Sure, go ahead." Then, Edmond's pleasure and relief at being able to sit properly after so long, and Abbe's chuckle of amusement. A wonderful and revealing moment, with no dialogue needed.

I fell in love with this novel when i first read it when i was in my 8 th or 9th grade in India in the early 90s. The interactions between Edmond and Faria and how he taught Edmond ,always intrigued me.
Unfortunately, in the movie although well made , the Edmond -Faria portions were not that detailed.
Nevertheless, this remains to be one of my favorite movies till date.

Could you imagine Richard Harris doing some of the more physical scenes at his advanced age age and health? He was 71 and 72 when filming the first two. He barely moved around in the first two Harry Potter movies. The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince had some scenes that Harris could not have pulled off as good as Gambon. Running at Harry to see if he put his name in the Goblet, The battle with Voldemort at the Ministry of Magic. Taking the water in the cave to get the locket and using the fire to destroy the things that came out of the water when Harry touched it. The acting as he falling after Snape used the killing curse on him Harris would not have done any of these well.

Richard Harris ? When you had him off camera with Peter O'Toole , Oliver Reed and Richard Burton , it was like " Super Hero's " on steroids ! England's " Rat Pack " . They were the coolest & hippest ! Men wanted to be like them and their women screamed their names during the washing machine spin cycle's ! Their drinking bouts were legendary and their drinking holes modest ! No fancy " Club 54 " or " Whiskey A Go Go " . Some local Irish drinking Pub outside Dublin , near to a film location . Places they would go back to years later and they still knew the owners and every ones name ! They lived as they acted , which made acting as easy as emptying a drink ! Thank you , powers that be , for sharing them with us ! I will not see their kind again ! The movie ? WOW ! " There is no deeper pit than a mans mind " LDT .

The one thing I found questionable about this, Edmond's inability to read and write. Certainly in that period illiteracy wasn't at all uncommon, but Edmond was the son of a Noble Lord's clerk, and an officer aboard a merchant ship, a position that does require some education, hard to believe his father wouldn't have put a premium on his son's education.
