The root of all this problem was the gazoduc between Germany and Russia.
Usa didnt want it and they pushed a paranoiac Russia to attack ukraine by branding the nato membership menace.
In the end Usa won by stopping the gazoduc project and enlarging NATO with possibly 3 new countries (sweden, finland, ukraine).
An alliance between Russia and Germany (europe basically) is a nightmare for the USA and UK..
China on the other hand welcome that alliance because that weaken USA position in the world.

As soon as I saw the news of Finland’s (also Sweden’s) formal application, I knew the stage was set for one of the most significant, consequential developments in European geopolitical and military affairs of our time - the reverberations of which will last for a long time.

I was 1-2yo when the curtain fell in full, so I don't really remember that period, and apart from US geopolitical disasters over the last couple of decades, nothing too significant has happened apart from 9/11 and some financial disasters. Most people wouldn't have expected the West to support Ukraine so strongly, simply because there seemed to be no (strong) reason to do so. But as always, things become clear when you leave terms as "absolute evil", because the West couldn't care less about what's happening to the Ukrainian people. I would like to add couple of points. First of finns are an ethnic group who live in what is today known as Finland. We have quite literally always lived here. We were under Sweden for more or less 600 years. Finland wasn't carved out of Sweden, it was always there, just without national indentity. Even though Finland was opressed under Russia. We had autonomy. We were much more free than many other people who lived under Russia, that doesn't excuse Russias actions against finns or anyone else. We have been a democracy for over 200 years now.
Also when after finnish civil war, which happened immediately after our independence, Finland had a brief war with Soviet Russia. Finland has had three wars against Russia during our 100 years of independence and even more before that. Looking at history, the question isn't, if Russia attacks, but when Russia attacks.
Between the world wars and after them Russia tried on somewhat succeeded to ethnically cleanse their border region of Finnic peoples. Ingrians were almost completely purged, many karelians too.
Even after all that, we finns are extremely peaceful people. We don't really have as much hard feelings against Russia as many others, but we are not optimists. Our president called Putin after the attack had began. After the call in press conference he was asked quite literally: "What happened?". And he only answered: "The mask has slipped off". It was the moment most finns knew, that the only way to guarantee our safety is to join NATO. Finland has always been part of the west. Finlandization was forced upon us by Stalin and his successors. It was a exceptionally dangerous, but necessary, political line led by Kekkonen.

Even during autonomy, Finland had democratic elements in it's system. Diet of Finland was an technically democratic process where people from different classes were put up for governmental duties. Still as part of the Russian Empire the nobles had the most power. It could be compared to how Roman Republic chose their leaders, which was hell of a lot more democratic than Russia now. Finns pushed democratic values, while Russia, depending on the Tsar at the time, tried to push back these reforms. First purely liberal democratic elections were held in Finland in 1907, while still under Russia. Some even argue that Finland is the first truly democratic country in the world. Thats why after Finlands independence democracy came so naturally to us. It was already here.

    • @QueenMooSuko

A thoughtful post! Although I do have a question: Do you believe Russia in its current form, ever really had any hostile intentions towards Finland? That Finland, as its been, has been more beneficial as a non-aligned zone where neither opposing side operates on, than aligned with/against or occupied by Russia.
Has a genuine threat existed at all since the Soviet Union dissolved? I know in the case of Sweden, they have no excuse to change their policy, but for Finland I understand the anxieties of living next to a nuclear giant.
And even I feel the attacks by the Soviets long ago can't be called Russian aggression (Stalin being a Georgian, and the power structures of the USSR having little to nothing to do with ethnicity or nationalities) but were just the actions of paranoid stalinist-communism.

to be fair Finland probably already has plans for special ops operations to the murmansk railways ready to be put in action in case of an attack to Finland. The country did these railway sabotage missions already in the winter war. If they have a chance of crippling Russian air superiority then they will try every attempt they get. Finland knows Russian strategies and weaknesses quite well and has propably been making through plans for destroying their logistics years ahead.

Given how Russia struggled against Ukraine 30 or so old MiG-29s and handfull of drones, I don't think there was much of a risk that they would achieve air superiority against Finland's 200+ modern warplanes even if they were fighting on their own. If anything the main concern for Finland would be not to dunk on the VVS so hard that Russia starts feeling threatened to the point that they would consider deploying nukes.
I don't think that in the event of a war between the two the Finns would seriously consider invading Russia, even if it is just for a limited purpose on a short raid, until it is officially WW3.

Altough I am no expert to any of these topics, I could identify some very odd statements in the video.
    - Finland didn't facilitate the siege of Leningrad. The Finnish forces dug down even before the Nazi German forces decided to siege the city instead of invading it
    - Norway was occupied, not allied to Nazi Germany
    - Finland has navy consisting mostly of small vessels aimed to defend a coastline dottet with small islands, wouldn't consider it to be a strong navy. Swedes have a much powerful navy
    - Since Russia most likely already has nukes in Kaliningrad, the Baltics hasn't been nuclear free for a long time
    And the most important bit:
    - The claim that Finland and Sweden are sponsoring groups that "seek to harm Turkish population" is purely a pro-Turkish viewpoint. Surely that claim holds some truth, but it certainly is not the whole truth. The topic has a lot of variables and multiple viewpoints, and presenting a single-sided viewpoint as the absolute factual truth is very irresponsible and just bad journalism.
However, like I said, I am no expert, so remember your pinch of salt. The thing is that I'd like my CaspianReport videos without having to digest everything with a pinch of salt; that's a big intake for a 20 minute video. You did make some good points too, such as "sweating more in peacetime means less bleeding in wartime" which in my opinion reflects the Finnish mindset extremely well.

Yeah I’m no expert either but this video honestly struck me as slanted. The Baltic has been nuclear for decades and it’s more or less an open secret at this point. But the forces in Syria are much more debatable.

    • @armija
      @armija 2 ปีที่แล้ว +133

Although I would like to agree with most of what you said, you are simply wrong regarding Turkey. Both Sweden nor Finland do not persecute PKK members and are a safe haven for that organization. PKK is an organization that uses violence to promote its actions and agenda, thus it IS a terrorist organization and as such is recognized by most NATO members, now you can look at their goals however you like, and you can be sympathetic to what they stand for, the fact is that PKK is an open enemy of Turkey and that they engage in violence there, thus they DO seek to harm Turkish population and Turkey. The subject is not PKK nor the Kurdish struggle, or Turkey, he merely stated that Turkey would probably be against Finnish joining NATO cuz they are friendly to an organization that is an Enemy of Turkey. It is not bad journalism it is simply stating the obvious.

For Finland the calculus changed already in Dec 2021 after Putin issued his ultimatum for NATO not to accept any new members. FIN security policy had hitherto relied on non-alliance while maintaining full NATO compatibility and the so called ‘NATO option’. This option meant Finland could anytime apply for membership if Russia became threatening to Finland. With his ultimatum Putin signalled that FIN was robbed of its right to determine its own security policy. FIN would be neutral not by its own choice but by Putin’s choice. This Russian interference combined with the attack on Ukraine were enough to change the Finnish position.

But this speculation seems so alarmist compared to the facts on the ground. Finland would never attack Russia or agree to attack even under pressure, because Finland is militarily and societally entirely focused on defensive posture and politically still desires to have good relations with Russia. And NATO would never attack Russia without Russia attacking it first. So the initiative would always be on the Russian side, and thus the only thing Russia needs to do to defend itself is to avoid attacking first. But who knows if Russia can do that.

Actually, the move towards Nato started earlier in late 2021 when Putin started to demand "legal guarantees" of not expanding. To this, President Niinistö replied:
"Decisions on new members joining will be taken by the applicant country and Nato's thirty member states, and decisions on membership are for the applicant and Nato countries to decide."
This attempt to try to decide over their neighbours policies, something we had to endure way too much living next to the Soviet Union, was the tipping point. After this, Russia responded that there would be "serious military and political consequences if we join" which really made nato an everyday discussion, causing the NATO support polls to skyrocket.
If Russia didn't try to interfere and threaten with us in public, I'm pretty sure the Nato support would be significantly lower. Another massive failure of Russian foreign policy.

I think the problem for Putin even if he has the IQ of a 190 he's got the wisdom of a donkey and the emotional intelligence of a toddler.
Even the most calculated narcissist is prone to magical thinking and this magical thinking often causes them to be very gullible and easy to manipulate. They can come across as almost shockingly naïve in some situations.
We've all heard the saying "If something is too good to be true, it probably is." Pathologically narcissistic people have never found something too good to be true, at least not initially. They become seduced by the reward and focus on that to the exclusion of everything else. It isn't that they don't know unscrupulous people exist, or that humans sometimes manipulate other humans; of course they know that. Not only do they do it, but even if they are unaware of their own behavior, they often believe others are doing it to them (or attempting to do it) all the time. It's that they want it to be true or real, and in the world of the narcissist, feelings equal facts. It's real because they feel it is. It's true because they feel it is.
People with very strong narcissistic pathology are like children in many ways. Children have no experience or wisdom to draw upon or with which to know better, but because their feelings overwhelm their reason easily. The difference is that most children will learn from experience as they mature. Pathologically narcissistic people don't seem to mature in this way and therefore, they do not learn from their experiences. They rarely seem to master control over impulses and feelings. What they wants more important than anything. Consequences are not fully considered.
They do have adult cognition, but it's so affected by their perception that it's often useless in these situations. Nothing that disagrees with their desires or feelings will be acknowledged, and if it is pointed out, it will be justified, rationalized or otherwise made irrelevant if it gets in the way of their pursuit of what they want. This is dangerous, as we can see in the often constant self-sabotage and crises these personalities manage to provoke in their own lives. All they can see is what they want and in many situations, this results in a kind of gullibility that seems to contradict their suspicious nature.

we soon stopped advancing as a result and just stayed put for years 1942-1944 on a period called the trench warfare period. until eventual soviet offensive made us retreat in summer of 1944.

The politico-economic order which sustains Putin in office has ironically led to Russia's incapacity to project geopolitical influence. The deliberate system of corruption has led to economic stagnation, military incompetence and an absence of a culture of innovation which defined the rise of superpowers like Britain, the US and even China. The Kremlin is fighting a 19th century war of territorial expansion with early 20th century tactics - it was never going to work in the modern international order when multilateral systems and relative Western unity allows for the rapid and effective transfer of resources to favourable belligerents. Curtailing information from the public doesn't just make them ignorant of reality - it makes the leadership hopelessly overestimate their ability too.

A tiny country that has no real military defence capabilities (in comparison to russia), HAD no choice but join NATO when existing next to russia.
If 50 occupation years (and another 300 years of Tsarist Russia history) have shown anything, it's that no small country exists next to Russia for long.
Our choices were: Don't join NATO and be eventually absorbed by Russia once more (as likely would have been case by now, had we not joined NATO). An option I can guarantee no LATVIAN (we shall not count Russians left in Latvia after the soviets left) would agree to settle on.
      Or...

Chechnya, Georgia and now Ukraine proof, that Russia has a keen interest in aggressive expansion and that those small nations are unable to defend against that and that "neutrality" doesn't help you anyways. Hell, NATO membership might even prevent such a situation in the first place.
