The Normans (Sicilians) really were too. Ruthless mercenaries whose lineage went from Scandinavia to France and then to Italy, all while winning battles while being outnumbered.
I love when people get a meta shake up I hate when things become stagnant and unimaginative, playing the standard way every match just becomes a muscle memory flex off all about tactics, this is about strategy
Watched it on Yodit's YT channel. His takeaway was, that he should have gone under the TC sooner. Btw, Tri90, welcome back to the land of the living. Really missed the HC. By far my favorite tournament of any kind. Never miss a game and have rewatched all at least 2-3 times. When Villese tried it against Da Snek, the latter beat it with FC CA.
This map is honestly one of the best for it, gold are in TC range so you never need to donjon at home like in Arabia (usually you have to donjon your gold + wood if you're lucky)
The only reason why this game lasted that long is that Daut kept bailing out on attacking the TC even though he was bringing it down and idling/killing a lot of villagers to go back to the woodline which frankly wasn't helping Capoch anyway. Capoch wasn't spending wood, the only point of the woodline was to sell wood.
Disagree about the map helping Daut. Consider this: on Arabia, Capoch's eco would have been easier to dislodge. He could only get this many knights and monks because his gold was so close to his tc.
Do you think this is something you’d prefer spoiler free as a viewer considering 1- it happened three weeks ago and 2- I have not casted it nor do I plan to? I ask because I feel that considering those circumstances, I feel it’s actually good for the viewer to see the results & many might find it interesting. Would love feedback on this.
@@T90Official I think showing the overall 3-11 record for the series improved my viewing experience by providing valuable context, but knowing the outcome of this specific game took away the suspense of knowing whether the strat would work
@@TheBreadbocksOH DUH, it slipped my mind it showed the result for this cast… That’s an obvious one we can fix for the future. Thanks for saying something 😅
Amusing enough, I just found this video looking for Sicilians tutorials. I just picked up the game again after years of not playing and fell in love once I saw the civilization in the menu. I find it hilarious that the strategy I’ve been having fun with offline, is happening in online play.
You have to think though that if it was Arabia or any more standard map, Daut would have been able to kill off or disrupt the gold villagers much more easily in his initial attack, making it much harder to counter with knights + monks. A big reason that was able to work as quickly as it did and drag out the game is because the only time he was able to attack the villagers on gold is diving the tc.
It kinda bothers me that DauT never got the castle age armor upgrade. He could have cut that damage he was taking under the TC in half for the cost of only like 5 more units, at a time when he had 11 units.
Castle age armor upgrade too expensive. beside, with 3+1 armor, the TC is only doing 1 damage anyway. If anything need to be added, it is the attack upgrade
10:00 I think only extra arrows have bonus against stone defenses and melee units don't give extra arrows. So I think a garrisoned tower can easily shoot a castle age Donjon down.
I see the 2-3h idle eco stat and think geez. But I'm unable to reconcile just how far ahead or behind Capoch is because he has more villagers, currently and for longer. I wish there was an total eco time working statistic, so I could compare. Also being able to graph that statistic over a game would be able to tell you (irrespective of the outcome of the game) if the strategy of delaying vills/eco to get in damage by strategy X was worth it in collective eco difference.
I wonder if the Cumans would be particularly well-suited to handle this strat with a secret two TC boom. Send some vills over to one corner of the map, distract at the main base while you build up the other.
As far as I know, garrisoning sargents into donjons does not add arrow fire, but there is a mission in the Sicilian campaign that allows you to get crenellations which makes it possible. Fun campaign btw
I really wonder why anyone ever thought that seargants and their towers were bad. They are a great militia unit that can also build towers all over the enemy base. And those towers can produce more of them.
When they first came out a lot of people thought of doing this very strat. YouPudding just made it work with market trade and figuring out a proper build order.
When you do these types of videos it would be cool if you had the live chat in the bottom right. Half the fun is seeing your audiences reactions real time to what you say.
I think best choice against this start is just FC UU. Defend starting area with a castle, monk up a bit and counter with your own unit. Imagine Boyars here vs Sarjeant. Not even close.
What are peoples opinions on this? Sicilians have been like, mid/bottom of C tier for almost 2 years straight. Does serjeant have too much front-loaded power early game, and is that pigeon-holding their play-style too much? Should they be scaled back to make serjeant more viable in mid/late game and less in early?
I just wish Sicilians weren't a one trick pony. Either the strat can't be overcome without map gen or player execution being the sole factors, or it does get figured out and Sicilians become worthless again. Not a huge fan of strats that depend so much on map gen. It's a good strat, just wish it wasn't the only one they had.
the funny part about this tactic is that the opponent can't even abuse the market because you are driving up the prices and you're also the only one with stable gold income. I still stand by my original solution. SPAM INFANTRY.
This was a map which very much favored this strategy, no tree lines, close gold for Daut. I have seen people beat it. Viper expanded around the map to get resources, much like Daut did. The other way is to wall and defend until you can get a defensive castle up, which will break through the sergeant armor and then use your best unique units. In this case boyar would have crushed sergeants. Daut would have countered with monks but the castle would have protected the farms to allow teching into light cavalry. Were these the strats which did you in, T90?
At the same time, if the gold wasn't close for capoch Daut's initial attack would have killed and disrupted his gold without needing to build up to dive the tc. Preventing the knight and monk counter that allowed the game to be dragged out in the first place. If anything sicillians don't care that much about close gold because the initial donjon they have to build to start the rush can help protect their gold from counter attack.
@@Amodelsino A good point, I see this possibly being played on an very open map like this in a tournament. Likely someone like Daut or You Pudding will adapt the strat to grow population and throw in a few knights to search the map for villagers wandering outside the OG area. Daut just did that against Tatoh. He sent villagers out to forage berries instead of paying for food every time, it ended up over 200 gold regardless.
People tried and failed because there was not enough early food income to make it an early avalance for immediate pressure with the standard build order. YouPudding found a way to make it work by skipping sending villagers to woodlines first, and then to farms next. All to gold and buy food at thr markey made this strat work. With standard build you are too late and the enemy can counter it.
I would say: Make early castleage serjant slower, more expensive and -1 pierce armor, but make supplies and gambesons apply. Then after squires you will have a very good unit, but not at 13 minutes in the game.

The problem with moving the eco elsewhere is Daut would probably notice that since the sarjeants were all over Capoch's base. As for demolishing Daut's market to cut the strategy, I think it's the best thing to do (since Daut consumed all wood around his TC and making a lumber camp far away would be risky)
