I had a 2002 Intrepid ES and when I changed my battery I went the extra mile and a few bucks to relocate the battery to the trunk like the classic AAR Cuda and T/A Challenger. About to buy another Intrepid and will do it again it is worth the extra time and money to never have an issue again.
What a fantastic internet source! Grew up in an automotive environment (father and two qualified, certified mechanics) and learned a lot myself growing up, however, my late father would have found your sites to be incredibly helpful as I did. Easy to follow and work great. Thank you for being on the internet!
I just bought new headlights for a 2002 Intrepid (with only 20K original miles on it if you can believe that, the wife works from home so it sits a lot) and I bought the headlights from 1A Auto and sure enough they arrived today and I went to start the car to do that job and lo and behold the battery was dead. You saved me a tow by posting this video and I thank you for that. New battery and new headlights and the car looks and starts like new again. Thanks so much!!!
Just want to give you a thumbs up, you are much smarter than some of these guys that try to show others how this job is done, for sure I really like this vehicle, but boy what a dumb place to put a battery, I own a 2002 Intrepid, I give Dodge a thumbs up on the over-all design!
We currently do not have a video that shows you how to remove the rear seat. There may be a couple of clips that hold it in place. You might be able to lift the bottom of the seat up and out to remove it, and the back may just slide up and out. Hope this helps you out.
I had heard from another friend how difficult this was on these cars, but this was spot on and a lifesaver on my wifes 2000 300m! The battery was 13 years old & was still starting but was starting to sound a bit more difficult when turning over. Took the battery out & tested at 84 CCA. The guy couldn't believe it was still starting! Maybe it was worth the extra difficulty as Chrysler obviously figured something out in the placement! Also, I avoided "The Call" from a stranded wife! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this guide. Helped me to change the battery in my 02 Intrepid. It’s a bit more of a pain to change than the last couple of cars I’ve had. Liked and subbed
All was spot on...with this video...exactly as described!!! It still took me about 1 and a 1/2 hours to complete. The nuts to the bracket were tight and are not in the best spot to use a socket wrench. Also had to take time to wire brush the + and - hookups because they were corroded. This is the best time to do this, before you put back on the + and - wires.
This guy loves to work hard and remove parts. God knows why. Remove the passenger front tire. Remove access door on inner fender liner. Take out old battery. Install new one. Done. OMG.
Thanks Mike! This video helped me. The video left out the steps that showed the cable clamp breaking when removed from the positive terminal of the battery, removing the broken clamp from the cable, and attaching the new clamp. When i reattached the negative cable to the post, I expected a spark, but I wasn't expecting the toot from the horn. Thanks again for a great video!
its actually the factory one that came with the car. my grandpa bought this car new, then passed it on to my dad and then he gave it to me and none of us ever changed the battery ever so its the original concorde battery. im not sure of the name brand i didnt have to pull it all the way out. were thinking this might be some sort of world record we were mechanics at a family landscaping shop before this and never had a battery last this long before
wow thank you so much for this guide your a angel right now. woke up yesterday and my battery was dead on my concorde and im trying to figure out if i wanna change it here or get a jump and change it in a garage across town. this guide was great
Thanks. Had to change out the battery in my son's, girlfriend's car. 99 Dodge Intrepid. Them things are a pain in the ass to work on. Last week, I replaced the Inner Tie Rod End, Bushing. Next week, Flushing the water through the system. Loads of fun.
+My Vlog Thank you for the view. Intrepids are a tough vehicle to work on, and we have heard this complaint multiple times. We're glad to hear the vehicle is starting to become more and more complete for a better overall ride. Keep us updated with the progress you are making! 1aauto.com
I just bought a used Intrepid I mostly like the functionality of the car but had trouble figuring out the battery I am not a handyman so can only do basic stuff the manual was not much help but the vid is excellent don't see why anyone would dislike the vid I appreciate your work I blame the Chrysler engineers for the design instead, however, I like having a tach and large instrument panel so I will trade off the battery issue for the those
Not a bad video, but there are alternatives. I own a 2001 Intrepid for 10 years now and had to replace the battery 3 time so far. According to the manufacturers manual, you have to remove just the air intake in the front, remove the right front wheel, and you can slide out the battery through the fender. HOWEVER: If you remove simply the air filter box (which holds the air filter), steer the wheels to the left, you can slide out the battery just fine through the fender (there is a clip-on opening door in the inner fender plastic cover).
Hey Mike, do you think the batteries las along time in these cars because of their location? One comment said there was an 11 year old battery, mine was over 5 years old and still going fine (but got replaced anyways as preventive), and there are many other account of 8,9,10,11, or even 12 year old batteries. Anyways, my thoughts are that the battery is located in somewhat of a remote location so it would get less engine heat. Do you believe this low heat location would contribute to long life?
Thank you so much. With your step by step visual demonstration I had no problem changing the battery myself. Also in the manual it says you're supposed to take the front tire off and go through the wheel well. I was dreading that. Your way makes more sense because even if I did go through the wheel well sure I could get to the battery but it would have been rough to get the battery cable s on and off. Thanks so much!
I must say,I thought that you weren't able to change the battery with out taking off the car tire..... interesting, but you've given me new hope, thanks you're fantastic!!!!!!!!!
i did this today and used the guide thanks again. i actually didnt have to take the battery out i just cleaned my postive terminal it had diff layers of colored crust on it haha but still have a 11 year old battery that tested full strength! butt he guide helped alot. also wht i did was i had a hard time getting the air hose off, so when i put it back on i rubbed a little oil around it with my fingertip and slid right on. i dont know if thats ok or not but i drove a hour no problems
It's actually EASIEr to go through the wheel well. Just remove your tire, turn your steering wheel ALL the way to the LEFT, and remove the wheel well lining. Remove the band holding the battery in (careful, these bolts like to rust out and snap off) . Disconnect your + terminal, pull out the battery, remove your - terminal, slide new battery in part way, attach your - terminal, slide battery all the way in, attach + terminal, attach band. Replace wheel lining and tire, and done.
You should probably get that replaced ASAP. If you don't have the "accordion" intake tube, then I would assume you don't have the filter box either. This is bad because you would have no air filter for your engine which means that ANYTHING in the air COULD get in your engine and do damage.

In my 2002, it made it a lot easier after I removed that plastic panel in the wheel well. You don't need to take the wheel off...just crank the wheels all the way to the right (make sure you have the key in the ignition so the steering wheel is free), and you get pretty good access to the 6 screws. Gives you a lot more room to wrench on things and get the battery in/out.
By chance how would you remove the upper part to the air filter system? I lost a screwdriver back there and cant get it out at the moment i just need to move the top most part out of the way
I have a Chrysler Concorde with the battery in the same place. I never knew you could take the battery out this way. Everybody I ever talked to told me you have to get it through the wheel well. Still looks like a pain though lol
my car also overheats, i think it has something to do with a radiator leak, also at 1:24 do you see like the corrogated hose thing coming out from the engine on the right, well my car doesnt have that or the thing that it leads to and just has an empty spot. what is that thing and is it important, could it lead to over heating?

1A Auto Parts had some issues with the fender because it had vents and the old battery didn't have a handle. Got it done and it fixed a previous issue I had with starting it.
Wow all that for a car battery? You would think you just pop out the old battery and pop a new one in. Wonder if this car was designed by someone who doesn't work on cars?
Remove two 7M bolts and the headlight comes right out, let it hang. Oh look! There's the front battery terminal. Plus easy access to the hold-down bolts. Going through the removable panel is easier.

1A Auto Parts had some issues with the fender because it had vents and the old battery didn't have a handle. Got it done and it fixed a previous issue I had with starting it.
Dj_Solop Glad to hear it worked out. Thanks for letting us know!

My late father and two brothers were certified ASA mechanics.
Wow all that for a car battery? You would think you just pop out the old battery and pop a new one in. Wonder if this car was designed by someone who doesn't work on cars?

@escobar644 I may be about to pull one, as well. Good to know that I don't have to pull the wheel.
After you are done, recover all the push pins from the fender patch and re-install!
thanks, dude-- great vid. So easy even a girl can do it! ;)
Remove two 7M bolts and the headlight comes right out, let it hang. Oh look! There's the front battery terminal. Plus easy access to the hold-down bolts.
Going through the removable panel is easier.
