SD Officer Retiring After 15 Years Helping the Homeless

- San Diego Police have a specific team of officers who work with the city's homeless population. Called the Homeless Outreach Team, they rarely arrest homeless people. Instead, they try to earn their trust and help them get off the streets and into housing. Sergeant Rick Schnell has led the team for 15 years. He's retiring next month. KPBS reporter Claire Trageser and video journalist Katie Schoolov followed Schnell for a day, starting when his shift does: before sunrise.

San Diego officer Rick Schnell is an awesome example of law enforcement who displays good character. The compassion, his will to serve others less fortunate and the support that he demonstrates, is commendable. Humanity cannot exist without love.
Police all over take note. This is the best thing we can do for drug addiction, it does no good to throw people in prison. Once we start treating it like a disease which it is instead of breaking the law. The best line, which all police should strive for is "Hes a social working with a gun".
Please Guys show the Police some more Respect, you never know what storys are behind those uniforms.

Stop being an ignorant fuck. You meet shit people every day. You also meet great wonderful human beings everyday. Out of all the SHIT people in the world some of them make it through the academy. There are some shitty police. However, there are amazing men and women on the force that never get their stories told. Stories of good deeds they do EVERYDAY. It's probably one of thee hardest jobs in the world. So unless you know a handful of these amazing people personally....fuck off.

This is so encouraging. As someone who is homeless (living in my car) for the last year, and has had 2 bouts of it prior and not even 30, I cannot even begin to express my happiness that somewhere, others who are in my position or worse are able to get the help they need. So many, including myself, don't want to cause trouble, just to get back up and get going in life again, and this is a very encouraging step to see that help is there, it is willing to be given, and it isn't coming with a condescending attitude.

After watching a video exposing the abusive stop-and-frisk practice, this put my faith back in the police. This man made the world better.

THIS is what amazing law enforcement personnel do. We SO need to reimplement this!!! I SO agree that the TRUST has to be there with the client, otherwise it's never going to work. Wish I could meet this retired SDPD retiree. I got tears in my eyes watching him in action. AGAIN that's how real police work and interaction with the homeless should be all about.

Never seen any "homeless friendly" Policeman in my life, but maybe in San Diego there are, I will update my comment once I will visit the city and check with my eyes.
If this is real I'd like to give this man my hat. If not, it's gross, but I prefer to be optimistic.

I mean, what this people need the most is housing, that's obvious, but knowing that other people in a better level in society don't look down on them, instead they're care for them, I think helps a lot.
Being a future officer myself, some cops are pigs. Honestly, some use there power for granted. But most, like this gentleman is a good cop. Not all cops are bad.

Please don't get me wrong. I am not complaining about this outreach program.
I think it's telling that so many of the people in this video keep on bending over backwards to call them "people" and "homeless" instead of what they are: homeless men, or men who are homeless. There is a reason why homelessness is a men's rights issue: because 95+% of the truly homeless are men. But to bend over backwards to please the Feminism mandate, to constantly call these men "people" instead of what they are, men, to incessantly call these men "people" or "homeless" just exacerbates the problems that send so many men to homelessness in the first place.
TL;DR I am not complaining about this outreach program; I'm just asking why we can't call these men "men."

A good man will protect those who can not protect themselves. A good man will help those who need it... BUT in Fort Lauderdale, Florida it is now illegal to feed the homeless. You can go to jail. SAD!a church pastor went to jail twice for feeding the homeless. We as people should help but also realize that our ways are what are holding us back from making a better being of life.
Finally a Cop that's not a PIG, and don't approach people like they own them money!! respect and compassion is all people need, and they will give it back.

Sergeant Rick Schnell is a role model!! All police should be like him, caring, loyal, serves the people and protects the people. Be nice to see him go around the country and speak to local department about how to treat humans, criminal or not!

Amazing. Nobody deserves to ever ever be bullied, homeless. We are humans. We deserve love and care and homes. I feel so so sorry for homeless people. I try to help as much as I can.

To be so lucky to retire so young where the country has to work till your your 66ysr old not right all cops federal and state school teachers mail worker Ocaw workers railroad workers very lucky. At 66 your broke down with very little good life left.
Good job,man... not many cops care about the homeless, i was homeless 2 years ago, and all they ever did here in mpls. is yell at yo, or keep telling you to keep moving along, and you go some where eles and they come back around and tell you again, but they never tell you, " if i see you again your going to jail " thats what most of the homeless want, to have a bed, and food and a shower and when you leave youll have clean cloths
