Omg. I was so disappointed in this book. I was bored out of my mind. I loved the premise. I think I gave it 3/5 stars but it's more like 2.5 because I was so let down. Anticlimactic. I didn't like the writing. I didn't like the ending. I figured out the "twist" before I was even halfway through. I am so offended that people compare this to Dexter. Not even close, move along.

Oh no! I just finished and loved this one. Quite pleased for someone’s first novel. I feel like the lack of a point for what they were doing is the exact idea, people in middle class suburbs get so bored and I love how this plays into the psychology of that lifestyle.

I gave this book a high rate based on how fast I read it and how fun I had with all the family drama (not the best either but it entertained me 🤷) but I DO AGREE that, as a thriller, is a complete mess. It is not a thriller, to begin with... There's no tension, the "plot-twists" are predictable as hell, and the ending was an insult (so rushed and surreal). The synopsis should've warned that it is more like a twisted family drama than a gripping thriller 😂
Overall I enjoyed the book? For some strange reason, yeah. It is overhyped? Heeeeeeeeeell yeah... I agree with almost everything you said.

Great review. I think it's a shame that Milicent was so underdeveloped as a character; a fatal flaw for the book. You're right about the poisoning being completely random.

Just finished this book. Honestly, I am glad I read this before your review. This book was grand in my opinion. And I would suggest to anyone to ignore or comeback to this review after finishing and deciding for yourselves. I understand your issues with plot, but honestly without the backstory the ending twists would have made no sense, without knowing about the characters the ending would not have been as effective. It was brilliantly written. Her style is very classic which may not appeal to younger readers.
Wanted to add thank you for putting some spotlight on this book! It is worth the read.

@3DogMom LOL calm down Karen, this is a year old post and I am full grown. Even upon rereading it, I didn't get the message of "I'm right, everyone's wrong", as I stated "in my opinion" and "I suggest", those phrases clearly leave room for others to disagree. However, if that's how you interpreted the post, I won't insult your comprehension skills. And the book was great (in my opinion). I still remember the plot well. Chao!

I actually enjoyed the book, but I think that’s because I read it so fast. The beginning was interesting. Then it became boring. Then my interest peaked towards the end. The ending was good-ish, would’ve been better if Jenna died or something. After all of that, the epilogue ruined my entire night. I was so angry with the author, but regardless, it’s quite a good debut book.

Actually, on your point about serial killers not harming their children, I saw in an interview that Melissa Moore, the daughter of the Happy Face Killer, said that her dad would enjoy upsetting her by killing kittens. It’s not necessarily the same thing, but it’s still emotional abuse 🤷‍♂️

SPOILER-Maybe... At first I thought the husband being an unnamed narrator was the real Owen Riley all along. But then they said he died in Europe before the last body was found. That's when the story all fell apart for me. They mention the Owen killer so much just like they do the husband. It is like its a fight between the husband and wife over who controls over the people being killed.

I am about a third of the way into this story and I find it offensively boring. I am not invested in any of the characters, the plot is tedious, and I have no desire to finish it; but I’ve come this far so now I feel like I have to! lol People I follow on TH-cam have all been talking about how great this book is, which is why I picked it up in the first place... and now I’m just terribly disappointed in everyone who recommended it. 😂 I really wish I had watched your review before purchasing this snooze fest!!

Why do you have to do a hole video of you just complaining about this book??? Thumbs down. This book is a great book. You are just missing The points. You are the dumb one not the book. Militant gave Jenna the eye drops to make her sick so that Tobias wouldn't find that she had killed Crystal and other women without him. Millicent is mentally ill that is why she kills other women. Tobias is stupid but not as stupid as you portray him to be. The real truth about this video is that you want views. You want to have a different opinion on things so you will get attention and subs doing so. I actually read this book and I got all of th e points with a little bit of pondering. It's not that hard... I'm twelve and a big reader. This is an amazing book and I hate the fact that your opinion will convince others who have not read this book to not read it. You have ruined the expirience and the thrill. You act so unsurprised...
Almost like you haven't read the book...
Their is a unshocking plot twist for you. Why can't you RANT about that?

The premise sounds interesting, however, the husband's naive (?) involvement is off-putting. You can write well about partners in crime, oblivious innocent spouse, but not a half-perpetrator, half-stupid spouse. Especially since it we are not meant to understand that he is stupid.
I enjoyed the rant btw ❤

Omg I agreed with every single point you made. How about when the preteen son blackmails his father? That’s where it lost me. I didn’t buy the ending. He didn’t even have the stomach to ask questions about the past women. It was thrown in there to shock us but, to me, it just didn’t make sense for his character. I subbed on this review! Can’t wait to watch more! Xoxoxo

YES I forgot to mention that part, but I was so shocked. What even was the whole point of that?! And why does the dad just not even care to clear it up... idk super weird start to finish, it's probably best not to question it too much :P

  • @nocturnus009

I think there is a version of this story that might make for a good read. It's probably better if the why is explored with the how? Why does he feel he is better at baiting the hook with the disabled tactic. It worked for the killer in The Cell (2000) & The Silence of the Lambs (1999). The simbiosys sounds like a great premise to jump off. He the web to her spider.

I was also super bored and underwhelmed by this. I feel like the only reason this book has any tension is because the husband is dumb. How the heck are you married to a murderer and you don't question anything??? It was just so predictable that I was pretty disappointed by the "twists." Glad someone else at least seems to feel the way I do!

    SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
I think the ending is misunderstood by a lot of ppl. The whole attire was narrated from Millicent’s husbands perspective whose real name is not known (sumthing readers don’t even notice). I think he was the actual psychopath all along because Millicent never directly mentions that she killed the women. The story points towards her being the killer because that’s how her even more mysterious unnamed husband points to. If u check the pages again u will see Millicent always blames him nd never directly acknowledged or stated that she was doing anything wrong. Also he cudve been the one poisoning Jenna. He was the one who sneaked out at night and not Millicent. I think Millicent was more like her accomplice. Andy acknowledged how Millicent was devastated after police found out it was him. Nd she always says “you are doing all of this”. In direct conversation she doesn’t acknowledge her crime directly, even in the last scene. Also remember how the husband tells the story of his pet frog whose tongue he cut off. Also the paper cut thing was the husbands thing. Cuz he said that’s how he wud protect Millicent. Nd in the last scene where the guy does the Tobias thing once more , I think it points to this theory. Also Millicent wanted to say sumthing while dying, but he killed him before she cud. I think all of this points to the theory that her husband whose name we don’t even know was the real psychopath Nd Millicent was just an accomplice. Because we only assumed otherwise because of his perspective of all the events nd not Millicent. So cud be he was the crazy one nd this was all his psychopathic dillusion. Otherwise how did he do the Tobias thing in the bar again? Nd wtf is his name even ? Nd all the ideas abt Owen nd blah blah came from his head.

I dont think so..all the ideas about Owen was millicents plan..like reconstructing the murders way etc..also what about when tobais went to millicents mother's house she said Millicent doesn't like the photos of holly in the house therefore they removed it before she came?

    • @tahmidw9921
      @tahmidw9921 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ketakirajurkar9492 The point here is the whole story was given from the Husband's pov (whose real name is unknown). This is all his perspective and we know that he's a psychopath. So how can we actually trust it? Because milicent from her own mouth and by her own words never gave the impression of her being the main culprit. that was all in the husband's brain. In fact the key to the argument of milicent being not guilty is in the scene where she dies and even while dying she blames it on him. Also the husband's friend when asked how milicent was doing while he was on the run said that "she was devastated and affected badly by all this". All we have here is the story from the perspective of a manipulative psychopath. From milicents own words you can never put her as the culprit and orchastrator of any of his crimes. Also, at certain points of the story milicent's response to certain things did not fit the narration of her husband. In the end, even after he gave the impression throughout the entire story that he was just a pawn doing his wife's dirty work, at the last chapter he goes against his own version of facts and does the same "TOBIAS" thing again which means this guy is out of his mind and is the main culprit and the only psychopath in the story.

A quarter of the way through i was so bored with the pointless suburban garbage that i had to stop and reassure myself that the solution wasn't what i thought. Well, turns out it was. What a stupid boring terrible waste of time story. These people kill for no reason and the nameless main character is embarrassingly dumb. This story is only surprising if you have bought into patriarchy and the ideas that women are innocent damsels and male cheaters are victims. This wanted to be Gone Girl and was instead a sedative. The solution was so obvious...
