I love that a car as rare as this is still used like a car. The owner takes care of it but he doesn't let the rarity stop him from enjoying his station wagon. I plan to do the same thing with my 1961 Imperial once that car is drivable.
I actually saw a two door 1960 Ford Edsel in 1974 in Vancouver Canada being used as a flower car in a funeral home.I bet these are as scarce as Baptist nuns in a strip joint.
OMG! Would you look at that! I've seen *1958* Edsels, and I've seen *1959* Edsels. But I've *never* seen a *1960* Edsel. It's a beautiful looking car. :)
Phil is such a nice man. I owned a '60 Villager 6P back in the late 90s. It was Cloud Silver with black and silver original interior. Mine had a 292 but it was still a very nice driving car.
The very last Edsel to roll off the line--a sand beige `60 Edsel Villager 6-pass. wagon--rolled into the history books. I met the guy that now owns that car!
300,000 miles? That is just staggering! And am Edsel on top of everything else! There are some objects in this world that can never be accurately valued in dollars and this is certainly one of them. A truly sublime masterpiece. Thank you for this Charles.
Don’t recall ever seeing one of these and I’m 65. Grew up in the San Francisco bay area. Those tail lights tho. I recognize the basic Ford styling of the day, then they stuck on those tail lights. Hahaha. I like it all. Looks good next to the pink Rambler too!
Fun fact, the Mercury Comet was originally slated to be an Edsel, but they decided to pull the plug on the brand after the '59 model year. The only reason they made any '60's was to honor dealer agreements.
You're a lot of fun . The 1960 ish space age Detroit cars you've recently reviewed are truly incredible . I grew up in Bloomfield Hills Michigan Cars were our lives . This Edsel is unbelievable . Thanks . I can tell . Like me , these awesome vehicles represent our lives . You respect that . It's really fun to watch you salivate over these cars . I'm totally with you on these fantastic creatures . Keep goin' . I think you're the best . It's so obvious . You really do appreciate what GM and Ford did for our lives back then . Simply , thanks .
Not Chrysler? Check out this 1960 Plymouth Fury Joyride if you want some fun.. I love this guy.. I don't think it's on Charles' channel because he's showing one of Kris Trexler's cars (only 210 views as of now): th-cam.com/video/HwlVnKTIFp0/w-d-xo.html
Charles, I’m sure, given your expertise in classic cars, that you noticed the similarity between this 1960 Edsel and the 1960 Ford Starliner you showcased in another episode of “Joyride”. Amazing how you can see each car there underneath the taillights and both dashboards! They were truly “cousin” cars!
There was one of these in my grandma's neighborhood during my childhood. I didn't know it was an Edsel. It just looked like a Ford Galaxie that somebody had tacked a bunch of chrome trim onto the body. It wasn't until around 1970 did I learn that the "gingerbread" Ford was an Edsel.
incredible !!! in sweden i saw at the big power meet in våesteras 2017 the exact same car ! color, type everything even the searchlight ! there was only one other detail. it had a row six cylinder in it ! and it was absolutely restored to 95 to 100 points !
First comment. Mr. Pheonix it's me- David Shreve from Facebook. You are the best. Keep doing what you are doing. I'm not a "Top Fan" for nothing. Thanks for the engine shot.
I know these cars existed, but I don't believe I've ever actually seen one on the road or at a show. I went to an Edsel car meet about 30 years ago in South Everett, WA. There were some Edsel wagons, but I don't recall seeing a '60. There was a really cool custom-built '58 Edsel "Suncruiser" retractable hardtop, done so well it looked authentically original.
This same model in silver was up for sale in Santa Rosa, California for a great price a few years ago. I wanted it so badly but couldn't justify buying due to living in San Francisco with only one garage space. The hills would have been cruel on that car.
Charles Phoenix has the best car review voice! Its really a shame they didn't release this 1960 style in 1958 - even with '58 being a recession year, I think this style would have been very attractive to buyers in '58. The whole '58 and '59 Fomoco lineup cannot be described as beautiful or eye pleasing - the best that can be said is that from certain angles the '58 Fomocos have a handsome look (in a stern way).
Let's go for a ride in that white over coral Rambler. Edsels will always be cool, IMO the '59 is the prettiest and 1 of the best lookin' cars of the '50's.
I'd prefer a Studebaker Wagonaire, but living here in Louisville, I know these cars were built at one of our Ford factories. I think the Edsel Club meets here occasionally. This is certainly one of the rarest cars around, I'd be afraid to drive it on a normal street. It's a real looker at any rate. I kinda wish they had built it with the vertical bumper as proposed. Sort of like what Packard planned too in 57. That split grill is extremely Pontiac.
Comparing this car to a 60 Ford wagon, there really isn't much difference other than the tacked on chrome taillights and the grille. The hood looks unique to the Edsel and the front fenders appear to have been stamped slightly differently at the front, but that's all that appears to stand out. I heard that Ford decided early in the 59 model year that Edsel was a disaster and had to go and bought out the franchises of all dealers that would take the offer. Had they all taken the offer, there would have not been an Edsel for 1960. However, there were some holdouts but it was only a three year contract, so they still had to produce a car that year. To meet the contract, Ford made this Edsel on the cheap.😅
I appreciate the 1958 Edsel story but what you are looking at here is a cosmetically disguised Ford Country Squire as Ford frantically attempted to put the Edsel to rest. I admire Edsel Ford for his efforts to move Ford forward from the Model T. But I have no respect for the debacle brought on by Henry Ford II if he thought this honored his father. Glad these survived so we won't forget this disaster. PS...I'm a Ford guy to this day.
Love your Rambler, too. I have a wagon just like yours, same colors.
Charles, This is rare among rarest. Great walk down Memory Lane!
Thanks. I counted eleven "I Know's" Thanks....
I 've never seen a car like this, but it is very awesome
WOW An Edsel and a Rambler, how lucky can one be!
I love that a car as rare as this is still used like a car. The owner takes care of it but he doesn't let the rarity stop him from enjoying his station wagon. I plan to do the same thing with my 1961 Imperial once that car is drivable.

Loaded down with a carload of kids as mom drove route 66 to LA in 1961. Behold the Glory!

I've driven a '59 Edsel Ranger 2 Door with 3 on the tree, which is quite a rare option for the car

Fun video of a sweet ride and a cool owner. “Every Day Something Else Leaks.” LOL!
Edsel!!!! Love it! Back when they were serious about projecting American optimism! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Another fantastic JOYRIDE!
Awesome Edsel! Truly outta this world. Charles Phoenix! Awesome to see you posting. Thanks!

Another similar Ford was the 1960 Canadian Ford Meteor. Wonder if any of those wagons are left.
You'll have to ask him to take you for a ride in the Rambler parked next to it. Wouldn't that be a treat? I know! :)

They finally got it right and gorgeous and then of course they killed it.
Front end looks very similar to a 1959 Pontiac Catalina/Safari
Like the rest of the car, it's a mildly facelifted version of a 1960 Ford Galaxie.
This car is for me!
Similar but vastly different. 💁🏼♂️💁🏼♂️💁🏼♂️
What a joy!

Very cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome looking car! I've never seen a 1960 Edsel before. :)
Thanks for watching!
Not surprised. The `60 models were only built from late August of `60 until 11/19 that year!
11/19/59 I should say. Sorry.
@@autobug2 I've seen plenty of 1958 and 59 Edsels. It's a shame neither year sold well.
I know these cars existed, but I don't believe I've ever actually seen one on the road or at a show. I went to an Edsel car meet about 30 years ago in South Everett, WA. The door handle isn’t the only thing that goes both ways! 🤣
...you like the old guy, dont'cha!

The front view looks like a mid 60s Imperial to me. Sweet wagon!
That grill reminds me of a 1959 Pontiac.
I'd like another look at that AMC Ambassador parked next to it.
I've seen a 1960 Edsel but once in my life, and I'm 63.

Very unique, indeed. AWESOME!
Would liked to have seen the interior.
Yay Wagons! What a outer space age beauty lol. It has Rivian taillights ha.
No Rivian has Edsel tail lights
MSRP was probably about $3650 when new. Similar to Ford division's Country Sedan but about $100 more money. Very rare specimen indeed!
I thought ‘Every Day Something Else Leaks’ was Triumph’s tag line!
The part with you driving was to short, unique classic of yesteryear!
Lovely car! Love it.
Glad you like it!
This is my home town! I live in this neighborhood! What the heck?! Is this shot in Placentia, CA?!
Cerritos -Artesia or Rancho Cucamonga? I always appreciate your backdrops for these joyrides.
352 backed by a Cruse-O-Matic.
Looks good.
"Every Day Something Else Leaks". RFLOL!
Once the Edsel video was done, he should've moved right over and done the Rambler Ambassador!
Would soo luv a focus on the driving experience a bit more. Especially with your title being “Joyride” 😋
3:11...Marvin the Martian!
That is one bizarre Edsel wagon!

Hey Charles, the uh, thumbnail is off. It has a '59 Fury 4 door instead of the Edsel.
Everything else, if not the Ford name, and of course, the size, would reincarnate into the Mercury Comet.
A FORD BY ANY OTHER NAME
Is that a Rambler parked in the driveway behind the Villager at 4:01 ?
Yup, and at the end of the video he pulls in and parks next to it.
Nice car, but you need to redo the headliner. I hope it came with AC with all that glass, I'm sure it heats up in the summer.
Glory beheld.
