I typically pull the 5 tines above the screws and loosen the screws evenly until all the tines are loose enough to pull out by hand. I put them back that way as well and just hammer in the 5 tines above the screws. It's a lot easier and less likely to damage the back block.
Thank you for this video -- I just recently bought a Tracey chromatic kalimba, and while it sounds great, the tines are super-sharp edged to the point where it's not comfortably playable. I just bought a new set of lingting tines and will see if I can replace them.

While I was tuning my kalimba for the first time, two of my tines were able to move to the left and right, it looks like they are pretty loose Is this normal or should I replace my tines/the bracket? I’m new to the kalimba and I’ve gotten mine 5 days ago, that’s why I’m not sure what to do
Calvinj Jon Candido muted and dead tines depend on alot of things, can be the wood or the tines itself, if the wood is not dead flat you’ll surely get a dead tine even if you replace tines 😊
Hi sir, thanks for the response. I have a box type. Just received it yesterday. And the last 4tines on both ends are muted. If the wood is not flat, does that mean I won't have a way to fix this?
I am guessing the manufacturer might have put adhesive on the bracket, in that case you risk damaging the wood, but try harder and make sure the screw driver fits the screw well so you do not damage the screw
I've found the characteristics of the wood have more to do with it. I've changed tines and wound up with the same issue. Wood is a natural substance, how it resonates has to do with a lot of factors. Usually the harder the wood, the more a note will sustain. All woods are a mixture of hard and soft grains. Depending on where the grains fall in reference to where a screw for the z-bracket is place has a lot to do with the outcome. It can be hit or miss.
There was one guy on here who used his recording programs to test sustain and Ling tings did the best compared to Gecko. Idk if he tried other brands too but yeah :)

Arwin Martinez tines are just spring steel, it just depends on the percentage of metal combos, but yeah, buy the ones used by known manufacturers 😊
