Welding a Resonator Cone Kalimba - Stainless Steel Thumb Piano!

  • Thanks for checking out my Kalimba build video! I needed a wedding present for a good friend of mine and he's a very music-oriented person, I thought I would have some fun and make him and his wife a stainless steel musical instrument! I came up with a design in Rhino 3D that I could die stamp parts for in my hydraulic press. One of the forming dies was 3D printed, then cast in concrete! The formed pieces were TIG welded or soldered together into this unique little music box. It didn't come out perfectly but it's the thought that counts, right?

You'd have to have the resonator cone much wider than the keys, and have all the key impact on the same area. Same way as reso guitars work.

Or make it like a 3 key kalimba, just the center ones? lol

Have a read on Bart Hopkin's Music instrument design, it has all the basics. The higher notes not able to resonate has to do with the dobro like disk lacking the ability vibrate at those frequencies, this is a bit different from how string instruments works where the ability for a string to vibrate at a certain frequency depends very little on the body, which is just a radiator. However in kalimba's case, because of the rigidity of the tines and the whole system, both the front portion of the body as well as the back of the body have to contain the needed frequencies in their natural frequency in order for those tines to sound. The easiest solution is to replace the disk with a solid piece of metal, around 1/2-3/4 inch thick should be enough.

Scale the fingers up atleast 50% in length that will solve your problem. Will lower the pitch though but atleast will work properly.

@@PunkerBuilds you can do a quick test by mounting the longest finger which is in the middle on the outside and see if it than sounds good and resonates good.
