Building an 8x8x8 LED Cube from an Amazon Kit - Arduino Compatible

  • I decided to finally try and assemble this 8x8x8 LED Cube which I bought as a kit off of Amazon. It came without any instructions and I haven't been able to find a set of instructions specific to this cube design, but I managed to assemble something which appears to be working correctly.
    The cube is supposed to be Arduino compatible, so next, I'll be trying to program my own lighting effects using the Arduino IDE as well as make an Acrylic case for it.
    Here's a link to similar kits on Amazon if you'd like to try building your own:
    8x8x8 LED Cube Kit (Like The One In The Video, Probably Has No Instructions) - amzn.to/32vaFuf
    8x8x8 LED Cube Kit (Better Quality, Not Arduino Compatible) - amzn.to/3bWLmEe
    Here's a link to the detailed write-up of the assembly on my blog - www.the-diy-life.com/building...
    If you've got any suggestions for Arduino, Raspberry Pi or electronics projects or tutorials, let me know in the comments section.

    This was a huge help for me! I bought the same cube with the same missing parts. I contacted the seller and was sent instructions in Chinese for a different board. They never said anything about the missing parts, but they were easy enough to obtain.

      Yeah these kits are a bit of a gamble, the sellers are very seldom helpful when you've got any problems with them.

      I got the same kit and couldn't get it to work ao I got a new one from icubesmart. That worked, perfectly.

    I'm late to the party and have only just started building my LED cube ! Would love a follow up video on your experiences trying to program it ! ???? Its 3 years later ofc and you have most likely forgotten and moved on !

    How long to complete this project from start to finish ? Did you look at other TH-cam videos of these being made ? I saw one that had a cardboard template being used.

      I started it on Friday evening and finished on Sunday morning. I'd say it took around 7-8 hours of work to complete, including making the template. I looked at a few write-ups online for guidance. I also saw the cardboard template, and some people have used a strip of wood with holes drilled into it, I combined the two to make an MDF template. It's a bit more rigid and durable than the cardboard.

    Did the switches do anything?

    An 8 by 8 matrix might be able to display letters and numbers. Could you consider this type of program - that is to make a led presentation ?

      Yes, this cube should be able to display letters and numbers. I've been looking into programming it over the past few days. It seems like the Arduino route is a lot more complicated than they made out on the product page. I might just go with the traditional C route, there's a lot to be learnt here.

    How long assembly time

      @MichaelKlements  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It took about 6 hours to make up the LED layers, including templates etc and then another hour or so to solder the components to the board.
