Today I will be talking about how pneumonia symptoms develop in adult patients. In this video, I am not talking to my fellow health care providers but I am talking directly to you- the patient. You may be a patient concerned about symptoms or pneumonia or you may have a friend or family member who you think may have symptoms of pneumonia. This video is for you. You do not need any medical background to understand what I am going to explain. I will not be using any medical terms.###First off, let me tell you there are no universal symptoms of pneumonia that can apply to all patients. Symptoms of pneumonia depend on the specific situation of the individual patient having pneumonia. That is why instead of listing a set of symptoms just like other medical websites do, I will tell you how pneumonia symptoms develop in our body. Once you understand that, you can predict which patient may have what kind of symptoms.You have to learn a little about how we breathe to understand pneumonia.
When we breathe air in, it goes down from our nose into our throat down into our air pipes. The air pipes divide and take the air down into our 2 lungs. Each lung is like a bag of small air bubbles. Each bubble is connected by small pipes and these small pipes are connected to larger pipes. Eventually the lager pipes connect to the two branches of the air pipe. When we take air in, all these bubbles expand. When we breathe the air out, these bubbles partially collapse. This is how air moves in and out of the lungs as we breathe. In these bubbles, there are blood vessels with very thin walls. They capture the oxygen in the blood and give out carbon-dioxide. Then the blood carries oxygen to all over our body.
Now you understand what lungs are how how we breathe with them. Pneumonia is simply an infection of the lungs. When bugs get into the lungs, they settle down deep inside. They cause irritation of the nerves in these small air tubes. They cause inflammation or swelling of the lungs and they produce pus like gunky liquid that can fill up these delicate small air bubbles. This irritation can cause cough and pain with breathing. The swelling can cause difficulty breathing. The fluid in the bubbles can prevent the blood vessels from being able to pick up oxygen from the bubble.This can cause low levels of oxygen in the blood. These bugs can also produce toxins that can travel into the blood and cause fevers, chills, weakness and sometimes confusion.
Having said that, do not think that all patients with pneumonia have all of those symptoms I just mentioned. The exact symptom in an patient depends on the unique situation. If someone has a very healthy and elastic lungs their nerves are very sensitive. They may have bad cough as soon as the bug gets there and start coughing those up. The only symptoms they may have could be cough and pain in the chest with cough. If someone has damaged and scarred lungs, the nerves may not be that sensitive and they may not have much cough to start with. They probably have the pneumonia spread to a larger area of the lungs even before they start to have any symptoms. Their symptoms may be more from swelling of lungs than from irritation. They may only have symptoms of shortness of breath. Again, in patients with years of smoking, they may have saggy big lungs. In those patients the first symptom may be from low oxygen in the blood as they do not have much lung capacity or lung reserve.
This way, when you understand the basic mechanism of how pneumonia causes symptoms, you can put the unique symptoms of a patient together and see it it fits the pattern. This is the correct way to learn about pneumonia symptoms in adults. If you have any questions, leave a comment and I will talk about those in my future videos. Thanks for listening.

Can you get pneumonia from tonsillitis? I had really nasty tonsillitis that only lasted a day and a half then I felt fine just tired.the tiredness has been getting worse over the last week and I've been coughing up a very small amount of yellow mucus for a few days now, I'm hardly coughing though and no runny nose.however my mum has pneumonia after having a sore throat and no runny nose ect so now I wonder.I had antibiotics from the dr but she said only take them if you're not getting better after 3 days so I didn't-should I take them?

Kayla Nguyen Thats not true. If left untreated some kinds of pneumonia can cause fatal complications. Remember, pneumonia involves your lungs filling with fluid. If your lungs are full of fluid, the oxygen in your blood will drop and eventually that causes all kinds of complications. Before the advent of penicillin, pneumonia was very often fatal especially to children and the elderly. Some forms of pneumonia more dangerous than others. For example, full blown Legionnaires' disease requires hospitalization. If you dont seek medical help with this particular form of pneumonia it wont be good for you. It is known to kill people untreated. There are lots and lots of different kinds of pneumonia. Some are more common example: Streptococcus pneumonia and some are less common example: legionnaires disease. Because there are lots of different kinds of pneumonia, and some of the pathogens can cause very very severe pneumonia, it is important to see a doctor if you think you have it. Better safe than sorry.

What?! They need to prescribe to you some medicine or antibiotics.
Get some cough syrup/ cough suppressant for nigh time so you can sleep and some mucus clearing cough syrup or meds (if you have a congested chest).
But most importantly get the antibiotics to actually get rid of the bacteria

@@signoracarter7024 i had to go multiple times before I finally got diagnosed with pneumonia. I had covid which caused my pneumonia making it even harder to get diagnosed. All they kept saying was covid causes chest pain and a cough. Its covid blah blah blah. I finally couldn't sleep and got insane chest pain and had to argue my way into a diagnosis. The nurse treated my like a liar and talked down to me in a condescending way. My advice. Be persistent and firm and don't back down. Just don't yell or curse or they'll kick you out of the hospital. I also never got the vaccine and basically got treated like a non human entity.

If ones lungs have hurt for three days, while having either an asthma attack or anxiety attack during the first two days, is it bronchitis, pneumonia or TB? A fever or cough has not accompanied the symptoms above. The only time the lungs have ever hurt prior was during childhood due to pneumonia and environmental asthma that is rare and basically, nonexistent for the last two years excluding the two days mentioned.Thank you in advance for your thoughts and recommendations. Generally a lung infection will cause pleurisy(fluid build up) and that will lead to potential lung pain and coughing. This is commonly seen with viral and bacterial infections. An inhaler and certain antibiotics are usually the first line of treatment.

mistertexaz yes, this was a year ago and it lasted 4 months. I THINK I got it because at my old job, they wouldn't turn the heater on in the winter. So I sat at a computer cold for 8 hours a day, (I wasn't the only one that either got pneumonia or bronchitis at that job) it started out with a cold and it just got worse. I have never been that sick in my life, but I'm thankful that I have been healthy since.
I have it now thank God my meds are helping! My appetite is slowly coming back. So I’m grateful for that but I can’t spit up anything 😑

i was recently released from the hospital due to pneumonia. also, a year ago i was in another hospital for the same symptoms such as coughing, chest pain, and fever. i had a full check up and turns out i had acid reflux, which I've been suffering from it all my life. now, i just found out from my most recent visit that i have exceptionally small lungs. my right one is the length of about 3.5 ribs, and the left is abouy 5 ribs. Is this normal? i mean, I've been to 2 other hospitals and they never mentioned it. I'm wondering if this has something to do with a constant cough I've been having for year's? I don't smoke or don't drink. it become really uncomfortable being around people. Wondering if because of the size of lungs i have, is this something that i just have to live with, always getting pneumonia, coughing, shortness of breath?

I have had pneumonia going on almost two weeks. I went to the hospital, got put on antibiotics and finished them a few days ago. I seem to have a low fever (99 to about 100.5) for the last few days. Went back to my doc yesterday and he gave me more antibiotics to start again. But still, I have this small fever that won't go away. I'm so tired of it, it's killing me. I feel way better this week than last but why in the hell do I have this small fever?
Did it get better? I think I've had it for two weeks now too. This fever is the most uncomfortable thing ever.
cuda861 I work in urgent care. 99-100.5 is actually considered a low grade fever. 800 mg ibuprofen or Tylenol can actually help relieve those symptoms. If it 102.00 or higher then that’s when we consider it an actual fever. Hope all is well since then. 😊☺️❤️❤️❤️Sorry you got sick. I’m dealing with pneumonia (bacterial) now. 😑

Ok. I have pneumonia right now and I know this will help you. If you didn't already, go to a hospital and they will probably give you an IV bag so you can get fluids and they will also probably hive you IV antibiotics. Then they might prescribe you with an antibiotic and that will help too. A few more things that will help are drinking a ton of water, getting a lot of rest and if you have one, use a Puffer/Inhaler. That will help out a lot and one more thing is that it will stay for about 5-6 months.
My dad also has it and he is getting so skinny he was in the hospital for like 1 week man it sucks he had trouble breathing he is out now and trying to recover. With some pill antibiotics

I found out last week I have pneumonia. I don't have a fever, just a cough, really bad chest pain, a headache and I am incredibly tired. I keep trying to go out for walks, I love being outside. Rose Ann Misa, pneumonia alone can't be transmitted. You get it as result of something; like a cold, viral or bacterial.
Pneumonia is the condition. It is caused by many differnt kinds of pathogens (far too many to list). Some of these pathogens are communicable (can be spread) some arent. The most common kinds of pathogens that cause pneumonia are communicable though. The bacteria that causes strep throat is a very common one. It spreads easily from person to person, and if the infection gets bad enough it can spread to other parts of the body (not just your lungs) which is obviously very, very bad and if that happens you need to see a doctor right away.

This is good, but I think it's imperative for you Doctor, to deferitiate between pneumonia and bronchitis because both look a lot alike and you don't want people freaking out when they have Bronchitis, and they think they have Pneumonia.

I had problem for about 4 months.i would smoke weed and not feel anything i had problem breathing i think it was caused by the mushroom in my apartment.however after 4 months i started using a high dose of vitamin C i did it for like 3 weeks and for real inwas healed Dr had given me some antibiotics to use wich i never used even once.i thought ill try vitamic C therapy if it doesnt help after a month ill take antibiotics.but vitamic C healed me.

I like your approach to explaining medical maladies. I have plans to start a medical care-related business. The crux of the business is to bring a higher level of medical knowledge to consumers.
I do have a question. If you do get pneumonia, can your body heal on its own, or is medical help always needed? Meaning, can rest and fluids work? And if so, does it vary between viral or bacterial? Thanks.
Antibiotics are recommended to help halt the bacteria from progressing. Bacterial pneumonia can be treated but viral pneumonia is untreatable. The infection in your lungs can also cause immune system to overreact, killing even the good cells that are meant to kill pathogens, for this reason you may develop Sepsis caused by your body’s defense system, working overtime to fight infection. It’s sometimes called septicemia.
The large number of chemicals released into the blood during this process triggers widespread inflammation. This can lead to organ damage. Blood clotting during sepsis reduces blood flow to limbs and internal organs. This deprives them of nutrients and oxygen. In severe cases, one or more organs may fail
What I don't understand is, the most important tool to expel the 'bugs' is rendered completely useless during pneumonia. My abdominal wall is so, so painful it so hurts to even pretend to cough.
