Throwing up blood is a medical emergency. If you are actually throwing up blood
right now do not even wait to finish this video and get down to the nearest emergency department right away call nine one one if you have to. Otherwise this video is for patients wanting to know more about throwing up blood. I will not be using any medical terms as I am not talking to my fellow health-care providers. I am talking directly to you--the patient. Let's see how you throw up blood.
This is our mouth. It connects down to the food pipe which goes down to the stomach. The stomach then connects to the upper part of the intestine. Bleeding in any of these places can result in throwing up blood. So when you through up blood, how do you know where it is coming from. The simple answer is you simply don't. Well, you will find some people on the internet uh... saying that you would tell it by the color of the blood but that is simply not true. Any bleeding in any these places is bright red when it just starts to bleed. As the blood sits in the stomach and gets
digested, it turns darker. We can divide throwing up blood into three different categories
based on what is likely to happen.
The first category uh... is a severe life-threatening
bleeding that can kill you within a few hours if not treated
property. The example of this type of bleeding is uh... variceal bleed uh... Variceal bleed is a kind of bleeding that happens in the food pipe. People with bad liver disease may get this kind of bleed. Varices are engorged blood vessels that are present in in the food
pipe. They are in engorged in patients who have liver damage mostly because of alcohol but can also happen in other types of liver diseases. In these patients the damaged liver causes back flow causes a blockage in the normal blood flow from the food pipe to the live uh... instead the obstructed blood flows backwards
into the food pipe. The blood vessels then become distended and uh... when they rupture the bleeding is so fast and large that you can bleed to death within a few
hours. If someone has known liver damage, it is the type of bleeding you need to really worry about.
The second category of bleeding is usually self-limited. They bleed a little and mostly stop on their own. Of coarse, there may be exceptions and even the most benign type of bleed can become life-threatening in certain patients at anytime but the most common example of this type of bleeding is a small tear in the food pipe somewhere around here. Uh it can happen after you forcefully vomit many times and cause trauma to your food pipe. It can happen doing hangovers when you
get very sick and keep throwing up forcefully.That may cause some tearing of food
pipe and can cause throwing up blood but the thing is uh there is no way to tell if this
particular kind of bleeding is what's causing you to throw up blood. They can only tell that when they put a scope down your mouth and look inside the food pipe.
The third category of throwing up blood can go either way uh they can stop on their own or can progress rapidly and can result in death. Bleeding ulcers are good example of this kind of bleeding. Ulcers can happen in the stomach uh or the upper part of the intestine. Uh the kind and amount of bleed depend on what kind of blood vessels is
eroded by the ulcer. A small vessel can stop bleeding on his own but a large vessel can keep bleeding until you you actually run out of blood. Ulcer bleeding can sometimes be so slow that you may not have any throwing up blood. The blood may quietly go down and actually come out as black tarry stool instead of vomiting blood.

I remember throwing up blood randomly when I was about 10 yrs old. I was taken to the ER. I don’t remember what the cause was, but on the car ride there, I remember thinking to myself that I was going to die

He wont even call his doctor. He (age 47, Im 52) said he will b ok. I dont want him to die on my watch at my house. That's how I got to your wonderful page.

When I was a little girl I threw up blood in my room and it was like 2am when my mom came in the room she saw the blood on the pillow and on the bed sheets so my parents were really scared they called the ambulance and we rushed to the hospital I stayed in the hospital for 12 days I was crying cause I was only two years old when I threw up blood what caused to throw up blood was a liver damage but thank to god I’m alive and know I’m 13 years old I was really scared when I was little

There are a few ideas for stopping alcohol at home
Try eating food when you are drinking - this cuts down the amount you drink.
Take a break from alcohol.
Make a note of how much you drink, then you know if you are cutting down.
Set goals - don't make them too difficult at first.
Choose one or two days or each week when you will not drink at all. Next, try to stop drinking for one week each month.

Hey I'm glad you're okay but quick question did you ever get diagnosed or find out why you threw a blood? Yesterday about two teaspoons of blood was in my vomit and I haven't eaten in three days and I think I have an ulcer but I'm not sure so any information you got I know you're young I'll appreciate God bless good luck to you I won't respond anymore so I'll say thank you now

Very well explained! Thank you for the insight. I had already called and spoke with a medical professional and they said for us not to worry until or unless you vomit blood. I won't worry until then. My son is coughing so much and that was most likely the cause.

Just yesterday i woke up at 3am puking super dry food, and after i threw all my dry food up the blood came out. Was so dehydrated they poked me almost 6 times trying to get blood out before they gave up, put two I.V's in me and waited for my blood to thin. Was the worst pain i ever felt. Remember kids. I was like 27 years of age randomly vomiting blood which scared me not once but multiple times so I went home and it happened again and my folks saw in my mother started flipping out when she saw like chunks of meat I'm no doc I thought I was throwing up my lungs or something so yeah and went to the local ER here in los Angeles California and all they did was talk about a blood transfusion and stuff but they didn't do it only gave me prescribed me some pills and made me go home. It's years later and I still do not know what the reasoning was why this happened what caused it.
I was just throwing up blood after drinking pretty heavily. Let's hope it wasn't fatal.

Doctor I hope you can get back to me I don't know if you still have this account. But since last week I've been gagging and a lot of mucus been coming up so I thought it was in my lungs because I've had pneumonia about a year ago..

I had this happen to me once but I had a nose bleed from scratching the inside of my nose with the folded corner of a paper towel before I puked. And some of the puke came out through my nose. I think it was probably just blood that was backed up into my sinuses. I didn't notice any blood in my stool or urine and didn't have any severe pain afterwards. I had a few drinks the night prior that caused me to throw up nothing too strong just some rum and coke. I don't drink regularly but I used to drink quite a bit.
Food pipe tear. Cool cool I could live with that. Only occured when puking .

it depends on which hospital you go to. if its a public hospital its less....but if its a private hospital its alot

Marie Cruz Do you drink alcohol? That could be the cause, there's also other problems like ulcers that cause bleeding in the stomach.

What happens if I’m spitting out blood?
I've been throwing up blood for years. Probably around 12 times a year for the past decade. At least it looks like it could be blood. It happens randomly mostly at night. I am sick for a two to three hours, throw up maybe 5 to 8 times and then fine afterward the episode is done. Anyone have any idea why this could be?? I'm so sick of it but am scared of medical testing.

Does Forcefully vomiting causes blood vomit??
I believe I’m in the second category. I’ve been literally vomiting al day. It’s been a mean 2 day hangover. Just trying to take it easy and drink water but it’s been difficult to stay down. After about 12 hours of forcefully vomiting some blood started to come out. If it gets worse I’m taking the bus to the hospital.

Over the last month or so, I've noticed small amounts of blood when vomiting. I had a stomach bug recently, and a common response to anxiety for me is puking (has been since I was a child). I've had acid reflux for a good many years now and the burning seems to be worse in addition to the new appearance of SMALL amounts of blood when vomiting (always from an external cause such as stress or illness). How concerned should I be about this? I tend to not trust the doctors in my area because they seem to be way too pill-happy, so I haven't brought it up to them. I've heard that I just threw up too hard (not hard to believe since the panic attacks that lead to me puking are usually quite intense), but I've been told that the esophagus can be eroded by stomach acid. I have had no blood appearing outside of my typical vomiting spells (they are only occasional, but the causes are always the same) and I have been paying attention to be sure there is no blood (dark or otherwise) coming out the other end, so all seems well on that front.

Same here man, tried to drink water after drinking, threw it up, kept puking, threw up bile and acid burned my mouth, then proceeded to throw up 22 ounces of stomach fluid/blood. I drank a sprite and slept all day, then woke up, rested, and got nausea again so I went to throw up, threw up dried blood (like coffee grounds) and then looked this up.. really hoping I don't die as I'm sure it's an ulcer and it doesn't hurt or anything, but it still sucks and I'm scared to death. Fuck drinking, it's not worth the time,money, or consequences the next day. I'll just stick to smoking weed.
