  • The art of 10mm long-slide pistols has been growing over the past few years as hunters embrace the power-packed round for big game. With viable options already on the market from the likes of Glock, Sig Sauer, Ruger, Dan Wesson and Colt, one of the big factory names missing out on the party has joined ranks. Enter the Remington 1911R1.
    Built to appeal to hunters, the 1911R1 10mm Hunter Long Slide marks the company’s only real entry into the pistol hunting market. As discerning handgun hunters have come to realize now more than ever before, the 10mm chambering offers plenty of knockdown power to take deer-sized game - or even bigger beasts in the hands of a practiced hunters.

    I had problems with mine from the minute I took it out of the box. Tried different magazines. I tried polishing the feed ramp. I tried smoothing out the slide. I tried tuning the extractor. I happened to come across forum about longslides and someone mentioned a heavier recoil spring. I put in a Wilson combat 24 lbs spring and this thing has worked perfectly ever since.

    Nice video.
    I would suspect the magazines before blaming Remington's design and build quality.
    I doesn't take much for the feed lips to cause problems, no matter who made the gun.
    Also, the comments on the recoil spring rates make complete sense and can muck up, even the Holy 1911.

    Three words for yah, Rock Island Armory! I have put over 2,000 rounds through my 5" 1911 .45 acp, and around 1,600 rounds through my 6" 1911 .45 acp and have had ZERO failures of any kind. They'll eat it all. I'm sure the same would stand to reason for RIA's 10mm 1911's.

    The break in is very common with new 1911 pistols, especially the Remingtons. I own an R1 enhanced fourty five and absolutely love it. That was after the first two hundred and fifty rounds of course.

    After experiencing the same feed issues, I asked my local gunsmith to evaluate the problem. He did some work with the extractor and all feeding problems solved. I was now able to feed my R1 10mm any ammo including Buffalo Ammo without any additional feed issues. Once the extractor was (slightly loosened) my gun will now feed any ammo I have tried and it is NOT broken in yet. Have your gunsmith take your Reminton boat anchor and take a look at the extractor before casting it into the lake!

    I bought a Ruger 1911 10 mm 2 months ago and I had the same problem on failure to load and jams, but after about 150 rounds or so it started getting better and better and I've had no problems with it since. Most new guns just takes time to break them in.

    My dad gave me an R1 1911 .45 as a housewarming gift. Ironically, it's the only gun I don't like. I don't have the heart to sell it since he passed away. I do plan on getting a Colt Delta Elite though.

      Tanner Webb most factory 1911's need a break in period, because factory slides are rougher than custom hand fit slides.
      Plus were they actually using 10mm ammo or watered down ammo.

  • @funflyer9958
    @funflyer9958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    First, the trigger is not adjustable as you say at 1:15. It comes pre-adjusted from the factory and its pull is between 3.5 - 5.5 pounds. Most will fall around 4 pounds. However, the overtravel is adjustable but, comes set from Remington so if you don't know how to properly check/adjust it, you'd best leave it alone. Second, most all production 1911s come from the factory with an extractor that's not tuned or shaped like a brick, especially the 9mm, 38 super and .40 cals. That said, once the extractor is shaped and tensioned correctly this Remington will function and be 100% reliable.

    • @TSPhotoAtlanta
      @TSPhotoAtlanta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you’ll see this and respond: would the extractor issue be relevant to the RIA doublestack 10mm models? Of several reviews I have seen, fte or other issues are seen either in newer guns or ones that are subsequently tuned with reported problems that cause jamming, particularly feeding issues.

    • @doctimw
      @doctimw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EXACTLY... This was the same issue my 10mm had. As mentioned in another comment my gunsmith commented that the extractor was COMPLETELY over tensioned. After he did about 10 minutes work with the extractor and it now has handled everything I feed it! Including handloads, BuffaloBore, Ball, JHP, and others. After reading thread I may also try some different mags but don't really want to spend any additional money on mags as the gun is running flawlessly. The trigger pull is Amazing. I am a "MasterClass" shooter in USPSA and IPSCA (top 10% in nation and international competition) and the stock trigger on my gun is very similar to the way I set up my open and limited guns. Open gun==1.5#'s Limited gun==2.0#'s.

      @abcertweld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alejandro Flores-Samaniego Yes SIR. The EAA Tanfoglio all metal is a great one as well but only holds 14rds. where the RIA holds 16+1.
      Both are great and both have worked flawlessly for me right out of the box. Lol then again I only use Underwood ammo lol real 10mm ammo. Double Tap and Buffalo Bore are good to but Underwood beats them on price.

    The 1911 platform was meant to be for .45 ACP that being said I'm sure Remmington 10mm like most 10mm on the 1911 platform needs at least 200 rounds ball to break them in.

      How much you wanna bet that the reason why the firearm wasnt reliably feeding is because of the cheap magazines. I had the same thing happen to me straight from the box. Got new high power spring mags from Wilson and it worked like a charm. I love Remington, however, they really need to step their magazine game up.

    You suppose it needs a break in? I guess polymer pistol people overlook that in a steel gun. Final fit and finish determine how much break in it needs. Just my two cents. I am interested in a 10mm pistol. I like the Iver Johnson long slide. Thanx for the review.

    It streets for $950-$1000~
    Remington's rep as of late has been spotty at best...which I'm sad to see about one of (perhaps the oldest) oldest arms manufactures in the nation.
    I've got the itch for a 10mm...and I've been fighting 1911 G.A.S. for the last five years....I may take a chance on one of these...perhaps it was a break-in issue?

    • @dragoneye6642

      Johnny Keller ya I your right also replace that mag with a Tripp research Cobra mag I had the same problem out of my iver Johnson Eagle XL 1911 it's a long slide like this one is after the mag change it runs flawlessly.

      Johnny Keller I had a similar issue with mine. Its the mags that come with the gun. Their entirely cheap as hell. They can't handle the slide returning to battery so quickly...change them out for Wilson Combat Mags and you should be good.

    I have this very 10mm. Brake in was around 60 rounds of full throttle 10mm, not the watered down version. Far better then a glock as I had one in 10mm and 45 acp and both of them blew up on factory ammunition. Glock = handgrenade, say what you want, but when your Glock blows up in your had, you will be talking to a lawyer as I did. And my lawyer is a shooter and a firearms collector.

  • @MrGuitars8

    I was interested in getting one but now I am thinking a bit , I have read about maybe 200 rounds to break it in well and hopefully that will be all it would need but , I would hope to get a Revolver in same caliber , I would rather that anyway .

      Same here. Used my R1 as a carry gun for 3 years and always take it to the range. I sent the first one back due to tooling marks in the dustcover which wore the bluing off the slide. They sent a new gun, but tried to say replacement was due to the slidestop rash - they claimed it could not be buffed out. There was barely anything there. All BS but oh well. It shoots like a well used gun. Not tight, not sloppy, but could have been machined and fit better. Overall, for five fity, I like the gun and shoot it alot. My SR1911 is waaaay better, but I still gravitate to the R1911 alot.
      My present carry is a Springfield 3.5” SS 1911. Very nice for what I paid.

    Most 1911's need a break in period because a factory slide is rough, where custom slides are not.
