  • I get to the bottom of the overheating issue I had with my VW T3 TDI Camper and put many of your suggestions from my previous video into practice.
    Thank you to everyone who contributed, be it advice, suggestions or words of encouragement!

    Well done you got there, it’s nearly always something simple. There is nothing as bad as having to watch the temp gauge more than the road.

    Well done Ross, determination has paid off.
    Can't remember: Did you re-set the injector pump timing before the spanner mishap or is that still to do?
    You're spot on with those heater hose spring clips, the are a pain! I guess they came about as they are much easier to fit in a factory where the engine is made up before being dropped into the bay. Every one I take off now goes in the bin and gets replaced with a nice new stainless steel jubilee clip... You can't beat 'em.
    Keep it up👍😉.

      Thanks! I had the pump timing dialled in perfectly when the spanner mishap happened. I was just tightening everything up! I did check it again after doing the head though. I believe the pipe clips are to do with them keeping even pressure on the hose, and that they don't work their way loose over time. I just find them annoying though.

    Nice one Ross! Glad you got it sorted. What’s the function of the sealant on the thermostat housing by the way? I’ve never used it on any of my VW engines, there should be a big o ring?

    • @Endfloat
      @Endfloat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually just put a small smear of rtv on the seal to help it cause I've had leaks before when I didn't. I just went overboard with it this time.

    • @jimkarthauser
      @jimkarthauser 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Endfloat I like to use a bit of silicon grease on o rings, I reckon it helps lubricate them so they settle into position properly.

    • @Endfloat
      @Endfloat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I often do that actually. It depends on the application. It's rare I'd use RTV where there's an O-ring, but in this instance I did because I know how prone to leaking they are.

  • @vandwellerfeller

    This might be my issue. I just had my water pump/thermostat replaced. Unfortunately I have a 1.9L engine so the thermostat is kind of a nightmare to get to. I'm just hoping the guys at the local shop just didn't put enough coolant in it because I have had to add quite a bit of coolant and I don't see any leaks.

    • @Endfloat
      @Endfloat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I would have ran the engine without a stat until I got a new one if it had turned out that the one installed had gone bad and needed replacing. Luckily that wasn't the case. I didn't explain the thing about the golf well in the video. There's this thing where people with DSG VWs modify a setting that cuts the ignition at every gear change which means it pops through the exhaust on every gearshift. It sounds ridiculous, and is generally being driven by someone who looks like they replaced the driver's seat with a sun lounger.

    • @denisberger7
      @denisberger7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They eventually fail, as they loose their "springiness". They were used because of costs, not efficiency. With the average Vanagon being over 35 years old, they need to be replaced, before they allow leaks.

      Is the insert that the plug goes into turning or is it the threads pulled? Either way, see if you can pry up a little while turning it to see if it comes free.

      Jump the fan switch connector and see if the fan is working on high and low speed. If the fan works its faulty wiring or a faulty fan switch.
