Today, we take a 'behind the scenes' look at how Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis came to work together, how the character was written by Anderson versus how he was developed by Day-Lewis, how Day-Lewis came up with Plainview’s iconic voice, how the costumes were chosen and much much more.

You caught on quicker than me because I didn't realize until like the 3rd time watching it lol. In all fairness though it's not made super obvious that they're twins, but then again it would have been clunky if Eli said "good to meet you, I am Paul's identical twin" for dummies like me who couldn't figure it out on their own lol.

    • @davidlean1060

But he is also very funny as Plainview too, something even Day Lewis laughingly admits to in the Charlie Rose interview Tyler shows clips from. I know I was laughing at him during the 'give me the blood' scene. I swear Paul Dano almost breaks once or twice during those scenes too. It must have been an amazing experience to be playing opposite Day Lewis when he was in full flight like that.

Good work. I was in the cast during the scene where he and his son try and enlist the support of the Signal Hill families, and I watched him do that famous speech about 8 or 9 times. It was in a small house built for the scene up in an area near Valencia, CA called "Mystery Mesa", and it was about 100 degrees inside; we shot it day for night, with the whole house covered with black cloth. We were all in wool, period clothing. It was glorious.

CinemaTyler Hi, I just discovered your channel and am loving what I’m seeing & am about to subscribe.
I LOVE and adore Clint Eastwood, my daughter bears his last name as her middle name. I just saw ‘The 15:17 to Paris’ & saw many amateurs (I believe)- like the general movie going audience, ones who DON’T dissect the who, when, or why- LOVING it, saying C.E. is ‘amazing- the man!’; I’d be interested to know your thoughts on his recent slump in film. I have many friends who are still sore about the chair incident. Full disclosure, I’m a liberal and overlook this, as I don’t believe it has anything to do with his work.
I’m excited to see more of your content! Katherine

When I watch the trailer for There will be blood, I felt a incredible need to see this film, I got the same sensation when I recently watch the trailer for JOKER, so the day JOKER opened here in Australia, I went to see it. I saw a lot of similarities between Plainview and James Dean’s character Jett Rink from the movie Giant - whose character discovers oil and gets all the wealth that he dreams of but it doesn’t make him a better person but ultimately destroys his soul in a way - Plainview, also like Rink, has no idea how to enjoy the mountain of wealth that he creates and remains a petty and selfish character. Also i thought the last gasp of humanity Plainview had was snuffed out when he trusted the man who claimed to be his brother - if you notice, through time spent with his ‘brother’ he actually begins to enjoy his life and his wealth and when he discovers his brother was an imposter it made him lose all trust in other human beings.

From your vids, I can appreciate the making of the movie and its finer parts of the story. Even though the film didnt do it for me (halfway thru and I still didnt care about the characters) I do appreciate the thought and effort of it.

Regarding the Dracula comparison: there's video somewhere of the TWBB world premiere, which happened at Fantastic Fest in 2017 as a surprise screening. At the end, PTA sat down for an interview with Tim League, where he mentioned that he always thought of Plainview in the third act as "Dracula hiding in his castle" (paraphrasing).

If oil is the "blood" of the land and he wants to suck it out then the comparison seems well suited to me.

10:12 to 10 :35 , I can totally relate to that feeling of knowing what bastards people are , so this scene had me roaring with laughter. " just give me the blood lord and let me get away ".

Well, it's basically that people tend to want to manipulate things in their favor. I don't believe that people are so bad as much as they are self serving especially when there is money involved. Daniel didn't understand the desperation of people around him like the guy pretending to be his brother.

Lewis looks so different when he's not in character - pretty remarkable and unrecognizable transformation in his roles.
