Have to mention as a 50 year old on the come down of life and loyal follower of the circus warp clans this is a great mix even if diy and deep house weren’t us in the hedonistic days of hardcore.
Not many folk mention Circus Warp, I went to their first night at Shepton Mallet, red and yellow tent, a mutoid waste sculpture and the guys selling mushy tea and hash browns. I even remember the black and white flyer had "only for the headstrong' at the bottom. It was being out in the beautiful countryside that did it for me. I never forget that night, even after dozens more.
This was one of the first ones I missed from 91 til then.. My mates made it but they all dead now and can't share their memories, forgot much of what they told me about it.. Makes me feel maudlin watching footage now. I was 19,in my prime, dreadlocked and loving life following festies. My most memorable.. Twisted tree 91 and up the black mountains where the sun only seemed to come once a day for an hour, potholes and mist and voices coming from holes calling for a hand out.. Lol.. Happy daze.
My mum put me on the missing persons register 'coz I ran away with the travellers and ended up here!!! l thought I was dead in a ditch?? well some of us went far off!!! bless Mark harrow.... spiral tribe... back in the day!! luv luv

Just read Dreaming in Yellow by Harry Harrison. Brilliant account of the DIY crew and their escapades. Definitely recommend this to read. My brother being 3 years older than me went to see Digs and Woosh play at several places. I remember seeing a flyer with them featured on it from a night called Stroudoss

yeh! i was at willington.took me ages to find it and when i did spot it i was so exited i went straight on at a corner and embedded my m.bike in a hedge. bike was stuck perfectly upright (safely parked) so i picked meself up out of the field and off i went. life changing night dont remember getting home but i still have the bike so it must have been ok.

Brilliant experience listening to him, all captured on tape with professional sound equipment etc. Don't ask me for a copy because I lost them ages ago - wounded!

Was a 3 dayer I think. This was in 91..also what was the one in Portsmouth called, they had a legal folk festie literally around the corner. That was a wild one. 91 again. ha ha yeah bloody racket ruining the peace and quiet of the countryside! I feel sorry for the travellers that wanted to play some folk music round the fire and this lot and 30.000 ravers showed up!
I was at Castlemorton, but I don't think it was the best rave of the era. Drug dealers had invaded the scene fully by then, and there was an undercurrent of violence and crime - basically people not there for the music but to make money selling drugs. Lechlade was far better because it was a purer crowd of party people and hippies/travellers. Buying drugs wasn't as risky or threatening, and the smaller size (still 15k people) made it more of a friendly, family vibe. Castlemorton was in fact the death knell for raves - shortly after the CJB came into effect, driven mainly by this party. It was also when the sub-orbital London crew merged with the more relaxed west country ravers, and it created a slightly harsher atmosphere. The London warehouse scene was amazing, but it wasn't the same as the field raves born in Somerset. Different crowd, different vibe. Still, good times, but it was the tail end of an amazing era. PS notice - not a single mobile phone screen in sight in all those photos. This was about 15 years before smartphones were even a thing! If you wanted to call someone you had to walk to a phonebox. i agree that lechlade had a more innocent musical vibe but the extent of castle morton screamed to the politicians that something needed to get done....and so it did CJB. Police were enabled powers that they did not understand or were trained for, so they used this subjectively and with provocation hence why organisations such as Exodus stood up for rights to be upheld.
Happier onheat the Exodus group were top people...... they used to give out skunk x Afghani clones to anyone interested and it became known as Exodus Cheese due to its incredible stink although today it’s all but a memory... I wonder if they still have that huge house in Luton where parties were planned with military precision, lol !!!! 👌👌👌🐝💤🐝💤🐝💤🌈😎
The CJB didnt come in till October 1994, I imagine this was probably when they first really started talking regarding stopping these kind of mass party's
I went to Castlemorton and can't remember a lot but mucho time in the ethereal DIY tent. I wouldn't agree that Castlemorton killed the scene though, I'd concede that by then it and most raves had been infiltrated by the low pond scum minority who's only talent is to fuck things up for the rest of us. However, on the way there my motley van of some ten Wirralonians were heading to one site - I assume the original site, and were directed by the fuzz to the new site. I've always assumed that it was a set up - drug crazed hippies creating mayhem and all that, narrative. Get a helicopter up and take pictures of the marauding mental heads, and stick it on the front page of the gutter press, and bobs your uncle you've got your public support for the repression of freedom in the Criminal Justice Bill. Now call me a cynic but...

I personally feel the rave music was at its best around in 89. The faster techno jungle stuff that began to emerge 91 onwards I struggle with imo.

I was at Castlemorton, but I don't think it was the best rave of the era. Drug dealers had invaded the scene fully by then, and there was an undercurrent of violence and crime - basically people not there for the music but to make money selling drugs. Lechlade was far better because it was a purer crowd of party people and hippies/travellers. Buying drugs wasn't as risky or threatening, and the smaller size (still 15k people) made it more of a friendly, family vibe. Castlemorton was in fact the death knell for raves - shortly after the CJB came into effect, driven mainly by this party.
It was also when the sub-orbital London crew merged with the more relaxed west country ravers, and it created a slightly harsher atmosphere. The London warehouse scene was amazing, but it wasn't the same as the field raves born in Somerset. Different crowd, different vibe.
Still, good times, but it was the tail end of an amazing era.
PS notice - not a single mobile phone screen in sight in all those photos. This was about 15 years before smartphones were even a thing! If you wanted to call someone you had to walk to a phonebox. Amazing that th-cam.com/channels/hB9k0zRx_uL8v9_ZDLgN_A.html captured these photos. Respect!
i agree that lechlade had a more innocent musical vibe but the extent of castle morton screamed to the politicians that something needed to get done....and so it did CJB. Police were enabled powers that they did not understand or were trained for, so they used this subjectively and with provocation hence why organisations such as Exodus stood up for rights to be upheld.
Happier onheat the Exodus group were top people...... they used to give out skunk x Afghani clones to anyone interested and it became known as Exodus Cheese due to its incredible stink although today it’s all but a memory... I wonder if they still have that huge house in Luton where parties were planned with military precision, lol !!!! 👌👌👌🐝💤🐝💤🐝💤🌈😎

The CJB didnt come in till October 1994, I imagine this was probably when they first really started talking regarding stopping these kind of mass party's
I went to Castlemorton and can't remember a lot but mucho time in the ethereal DIY tent. I wouldn't agree that Castlemorton killed the scene though, I'd concede that by then it and most raves had been infiltrated by the low pond scum minority who's only talent is to fuck things up for the rest of us. However, on the way there my motley van of some ten Wirralonians were heading to one site - I assume the original site, and were directed by the fuzz to the new site. I've always assumed that it was a set up - drug crazed hippies creating mayhem and all that, narrative. Get a helicopter up and take pictures of the marauding mental heads, and stick it on the front page of the gutter press, and bobs your uncle you've got your public support for the repression of freedom in the Criminal Justice Bill. Now call me a cynic but...
