I love the idea that Luke is looking over his shoulder at anyone seeing him or overhearing him using that audiobook...in the confines of his own home, in a building he owns. He knows Lorelai pops in unannounced too often.
He brought it up because at least Lorelei has Rory in her life so she’s not alone; meanwhile Luke is divorced (having been married which is something Lorelei wants) and so that’s the comparison. It’s not a great comparison but they’re talking about life goals and landmarks I’d think.

But in the end it actually showed it was the opposite as Luke finally realized his feelings and did something about it. Then he gave the book to Jess meaning he realized the value.
Notice in my main comment I am not speaking specifically about the show. This rhetoric (therapy being a catchall or punchline) was everywhere in nineties and early oughts, and even before. I'm glad for the resolution for this arc for Jess and Luke, that taking time to learn to communicate actually helped them and made their lives better (not right away, though, as that rarely happens in therapy!).
The one thing I still dont understand is how Sookie was a LL shipper & as soon as Lorelai breaks up with Jason, she introduces Shel 🤔 whyyy on earth would she do that knowing Luke has been into Lorelai for so long & even worse, that Lorelai has feelings for him too!?!?!? If Im not wrong, Sookie is the second person after Emily who points out to Lorelai that Luke has been in love with her! ☹️☹️☹️
