I, an Icelander, am planning to use the opportunity of the Covid-summer of 2020 to rent a small camper and travel to all the places I visited 20-30 years ago and have been totally inaccessible on account of being swamped with tourists. This summer will be devoid of tourists, for obvious reasons, so now is our chance (us, the locals) to sustain what remains of the tourist industry this year. Unfortunately, the Gold Rush will resume next year (or whenever the SARS-Cov-2 problem is resolved).
Ohh wow! That Camper is the most cozy thing I have seen today. We really want to do this thing. I heard its ok to park the campers anywhere in Iceland unlike US .. I was wondering if you talk more about the free overnight parking areas there for the campervans, it would be of a great help. Thanks much and I am so excited to see more of the rest.
Contrary to popular belief it isn’t really ok to park just anywhere. Not sure if there are fines involved but we were only asked to move once. Pay to park can still be a little spendy (around €30 if I recall correctly) but usually have electricity, showers/facilities.

They have grocery stores in gas stations around the ring road. Also, they have restaurants inside the gas station/grocery store if you feel like splurging a little. And don't worry because I think that there's only one toll booth in the whole country--at least we only went through that one that you went through.

You don't need to buy water in Iceland, you can drink the tap water or literally go to the next lake and drink water from there, as long as it's not glacier water you're fine

A big NO-NO, you should not just pull over and park your vehicle on the road shoulder. It's dangerous and inconvenience to other road users. You should only stop and park at designated area of camper-van ground or at least you need to find some empty space which save enough for you to park your vehicle. Please do not do this for future want-to-be visitors. But good and informative VLOG. Cheers!
Camping tip - don't set up the bbq so close to your vehicle (safety first). Use the table to put the bbq on so you do not have to hunch. Buy some veggies to grill (peppers, zuccini, egg plant - whatever you can find). Next time, save up condiment packets so you don't have to buy full bottles of ketchup (Canadian spelling), etc. Enjoy!
+Northview59 hey good call on the table for the BBQ! Duh! Haha. And yes, grilled veggies is great! Our main issue seems to be setting up the grill somewhere the wind won't blow it out. /J
If you get a cardboard box - you could cut out a side to use it as a windscreen. Just don't put it too close. When we car camp - we use a Rubbermaid bucket for our cutlery, buns, dry goods, etc and use the bucket as a wind block. You'll get the hang of it.
Hi +richard mctere right now there is not much darkness. The Sun seems to dip down and then back up. In the hight of winter though you only have a few hours of daylight and then darkness for the rest of the time. Its very different and something to get used to. -Ash

+Zama World We understand the struggle. It is very expensive here and for sure takes a bit of saving to do it right. I can say that in the winter there are less touristst and you'll fin prices are lower for almost everything. We suggest coming for New Years. Its like no where else in the world. With summer time Iceland though you have all day to explore. Also hitch hiking is easier because of all the tourist so that cuts down on costs if you are into that sorta thing. We picked up two guys from Russia today and they said they have been picked up every time very quickly. As well in summer you can explore so much more of the country because the snow is so much less.:) It is a very hard decision. -Ash

Haha, well, let's be honest, if you don't have a bathroom... you have to find one! If you absolutely must go now, behind a rock is your best bet. But we've found enough small towns and cafe's to keep that to a minimum. /J
No, Wow is a budget airline. We had to pay extra for our bags I think $50 a bag and any food or drink you have to pay extra for as well. So be sure to bring your own. Their flights, even with an extra charge for bags, do tend to be much cheaper then any other you just have to plan ahead and pack a snack.:) -Ash

Haha, I know! I feel like a cup of water is just basic human decency. Oh well. The seats were comfortable and spacious at least. It is still quite cold. It's been mid 50*'s and windy so yeah, still a bit cold. /J

Its been really great. The wind can be really cold but we have only had one really windy day. The sun has been shining and warming us up. Mostly in the mid 50's F. Not bad as long as you bundle up.:) -Ash

It's true, there is a tiny population compared to the tourism. And yet, it doesn't feel too bad compared to other places. The culture here is still quite preserved. /J
