Mountain Lion Screams! Two Cougars Calling Out To Each Other And Striking Up A Courtship

  • Two cougars looking for love in all the right places in the Angeles National Forest and then striking up a courtship in the canyon.
This is the story of two lions looking for each other in the night, and both of them are heard and seen caterwauling in the forest, as they get closer to finding each other. I recently shared a video of these two big cats on a date, in the daytime, passing by my creek cameras. Well this is the night before, where you see them in a canyon, several miles away, calling out to each other, eventually meeting up minutes later, and then passing by my camera, together as a “puma power couple.”
This is so special to see and so reassuring that the lion population is thriving and will continue. As it should.

The reason this hits home with me is when I was 18-years-old I was camping in the mountains of Colorado . It began to rain so I zipped up my bag and finally dozed off. After a while I was awakened by what I thought was a woman screaming within a few feet of me. I was petrified and called out to the darkness. I sat up trying to determine what had just happened. After hearing this video, I now know that it was a mountain lion. The screams sounded exactly like what I heard. I sat still for the rest of the night but heard nothing. I just turned 70 a few days ago and finally the mystery is solved.

My wife and I were outside one evening and heard something similar to this only longer lasting each time. We thought it was a woman screaming, but our dogs went ballistic. They freaked out and the hair on the back of their necks puffed up like a lion’s mane. We knew what it was then. For three days the dogs walked patrols around our house. Never did anything like this before we heard it. They’re outside dogs, but we tried to get them to come in for a few days. They wouldn’t stay in. Wanted to guard, I guess.

I was living in a new house in the woods about 25 miles from Syracuse, New York, in the middle of the state, not the Adirondack or Catskill mountains.
I heard what sounded like a drunk woman shouting "ow, ow, OW!" behind my house, 2AM.
I almost called 911 until the ow, ow, OW crescendoed in a scream that was clearly not human.
The neighbors tried to tell me it was a bobcat. Bobcats don't sound like that.
10 years later a man going in to a small cemetery set back from the road saw a panicked deer run into the clearing, followed by a cougar.
He decided his late wife didn't need flowers that day and turned the car around.
I always told new people to keep their pets in at night, but the cemetery sighting was in broad daylight.

Well, dad & mom hurried to the car & locked the doors & that damm thing kept us there till sunrise-- no B.S😱, to me it sounded like a baby crying😬- it ened up in a cottonwood tree next to our car-- talk about an EXPERIANCE I never forgot🤪🐆, for Reals,

I lived along side cougars, bears etc. They eat deer mainly, we lived peacefully side by side. Two vocalized walking around where my dogs were at night, saying, "We're coming through, leave us alone and we'll leave you alone." Never did any harm. It's the entitled humans that ruined the area. Destroyed bear dens, black bears don't excavate their own dens, use what's there from before. Killed the beavers on the creek also. Then talked about spending tens of thousands of dollars to build catchment basins and riffles to retain water in summer to help wildfire fighting. Creek water used to put out cabin fire, kept it out of the forest we lived in. I miss all the critters.

I used to live in the mountains. I studied Zoology in college before briefly moving to NM. The woods were directly behind my home in a canyon. A small river ran thru it making it a hot spit for wildlife and my dream come true.
We had a barbecue when I heard a mountain Lion screaming out like this. The guests panicked. They wanted to go inside immediately. I wanted to retrieve my camera and telephoto lens. They prayed for me & informed me white people were crazy. I didn’t argue w the crazy part, but was unsure why they were so nervous. We were at plenty of safe distance high in the canyon.
Turns out they believed it was a skinwalker coming expressly for me. Why only me?
*sigh* I’d rescued 2 baby owls prior to that who fell from their nest during a storm. I held them in my hands, because… ya know hands. 🙌 We, as humans, use hands to pick things up. Unbeknownst to me, Mexicans and Hispanics believe owls are witches. I guess that made me a witch by handling 2 baby witches. Or idk. Maybe it made me a shapeshifting skinwalker? I’m not certain. None the less, I proved them right by willingly trying to photograph a skinwalker.
Try as I may, I couldn’t make them understand it was a mountain Lion…& owls were …ya know…OWLS! The mountain Lion was undeniably more dangerous than any witch I may have inadvertently handled.
Still, they were grateful our house trim was painted witch and demon repellent turquoise. I guess that’s the magic color that prevents skinwalkers and witches from entering and possessing you. Idk. I was overjoyed to hear her mating call. I wished I could share it w someone. Especially when I saw her up in a tree later. She had a lot of melanin. She appeared almost jet black. Absolutely beautiful. I happened upon her chilling in a tree while on a hike. Thankfully she was full and unthreatened. Neither she nor I wanted to deal w confrontation that day.
God it was different living surrounded by those beliefs. 😂

Its so cool and scary knowing these cats are out there roaming around. We had one hanging out on our land one winter thru summer. I saw its tracks in the snow. Then in summer, i was picking berries and i heard a loud panting sound, it was very hot. I could tell it was very close and trying to be quiet. I didnt feel like i was being stalked but i left anyway! It left one day when my Dad was using chainsaw to cut dead wood. Must've disturbed it cuz i saw it cross the path i was on and jump up the bank and over the fence. Quietly and effortlessly. My dog knew the cat was coming before I did cuz he got as close to the ground as he could. As soon as I asked him what was wrong, I i saw the cat. It was so very cool! ❤ We also have a bobcat that hangs out regularly. Many pics of it on trail cam. ❤

I am very, very glad I watched this a few weeks ago, so that when I was out backpacking yesterday morning and heard these EXACT sounds echoing up from the stream valley where my trail was about to descend, I knew to 180 it back to the trailhead and figure out a Plan B!!! Most terrifying and coolest moment I've ever had out on the trail.

Robert thank you for the excellent storyline of the cats mating ritual. I have a cats behind my house in Louisiana that I’ve heard caterwauling for past few years. The first year I was like WHAT IS THAT. Saw video of another cat and once you know there’s no mistaking it anymore. Excellent video content and production.

You have captured amazing footage.....We live in central NY and have had mountain lions/puma on our 5 acres...Witnessed by many, along with our friends who own a beef farm, 2 miles up the road....We have since moved and there have been sightings, along with pictures taken, of mountain lion on the property of our friends, 13 miles just south of us, here in central NY... One ran about 18 to 20 feet in front of our car, in that same vicinity...All very exciting....Such magnificent creatures....

We live in foothills of Colorado beside wilderness and my neighbors often think fox calls are from mountain lions. Yours is a great example of cat calls. It’s easy to confuse them for fox but I can hear the difference - cats being cat-like. This is beautiful, I’m so jealous of your camera set up!

I live in the Ohio valley and just heard this!!! My husband just got home from an evening shift an hour ago and said, “come outside! There’s something barking or screaming in the woods behind the house and our coonhound is going crazy and cowering in its house.” We listened to this exact sound for about 10 minutes. We have NEVER heard this sound until tonight. My husband has spent his whole life hunting and spending time in the woods and never heard this. We have been so spooked and worried since I found this video. What we heard and this video are a perfect match.
