Sold my Studio Display for the PG32UCDM OLED. Best decision I ever made. Opulent live with the light leakage, uniformity issues, piss poor camera, lack of HDR, and contrast that was also pretty poor.
@@CheeseTurbulence ahh i see, yeah the apple displays truly physically look really nice, i have to admit, and nothing out there really has true tone or even proper auto brightness.. @@CheeseTurbulence oh also, as a colorist i have found that premiere and other NLE's act REALLY weird when using a software calibration profile, (the eyedroppers stop working properly and the export vs preview window differences get worse) so I actually use an iphone, ipad or macbook screen as my final reference screen after using scopes - so i totally get what you mean by trusting the mac screen more (even if it's inaccurate, most people are looking at the content via iphone screens anyway, and they're calibrated similarly.)
Sure things, this is the monitor arm I use: geni.us/XFTxsqK? Didn't need any additional adapters, as long as you have the VESA version of the Studio Display.
I’m doing this this week but with 3 screens (2 Studio Displays + 1 hdmi ASUS gaming monitor), i’ll tell you how it goes but so far so good, jangly cables seems to be working. I’m waiting deliveries for other components (USB hub + DP Switch).
the difference between the screens is almost certainly an gamma thing. I would recommend you get a colorimeter, a Datacolor Spyder Pro X or equivalent can help you get these 2 displays perfectly tone matched!
Great video, I will try this method on my 2012 Mac Pro and Apple 27 inch Thunderbolt Display. From what I understand it should work, just it’s not Windows PC and it’s older display. I tried a lot of different things and nothing seems to work but I refuse to give up just yet. I am very optimistic about your idea. I don’t see any reason why it would not work. Thanks for sharing this!
I've done something fairly similar myself with an '09 imac and gotten it to work pretty seamlessly as if it were a normal display. The displays apple put in their computers are truly killer, and I thought it'd be a shame to never use the display of the imac given it was better than my current one (a cheapo acer, the imac was given to me by someone)
@@MKR3238 apple stopped with even thunderbolt in because apparently the iMacs were becoming "too advanced" for video and other signals to be passed over a cable
I do this setup everyday, but the windows machine is a parallels vm. Have to because unfortunately I am stuck using quickbooks, which only really functions on windows.
man, if only apple studio display had all 4 usb c ports as thunderbolt. i woudlve got it in a heartbeat. as someone who needs to switch between a PC, and windows laptop, and a mac on daily basis - all that cable replugging will not work.
man ngl this video is the asmr I need to code the productivity and shooting it makes it an immersive experience and gave the outcome to everyone whoever wants to try studio displays for coding in windows or linux including me
I have a similar setup and even purchased a Satechi USB converter, but I'm having issues getting my hard drives to be recognized. The drives aren't showing up on my computer at all. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to fix this?
Correct me if I'm wrong; but wouldn't it be easier (somewhat cheaper) if you just used a Mac Studio / Mac Mini with a M1 / M2 chip and run MacOS with Parallels and then setup two (2) desktops (Windows - 1 monitor desktop / MacOS - 1 monitor desktop). Then you can just use 1 keyboard and 1 mouse and not have any need for a KVM switch and other dongles. Um, because that's what I have been doing since for the last 5 years on my two (2) Mac 27" LED monitors (yes, I did by two thunderbolt to old thunderbolt dongles). Just saying. Happy Tech-ing.
I use my Macbook Pro with my ProDisplay XDR and for my 3D work I have a Windows workstation with 3x4090 in a room next to my that I control remotly via parsec. I have a 2560x1440 Windows window on my mac and it works flawlessly! Also: I can travel wherever I want and use my Windows workstation, even in hotels with as low as 15 mbit internet speed.
Awesome. I currently switch between a Mac and a PC on a Studio Display. The main thing that’s bothering me is that with the PC the refresh rate is just 60Hz. Did you found a solution for that?
The solution I plan on implementing soon (so this hasn’t been tested) is to have the Mac control everything, but on the Mac have Windows’ native Remote Desktop app to remote control my windows machine. Then have a DAS or NAS act as the main storage for both machines. That way there’s no funky cable and drivers haggling. If both of the computers are connected to a little network switch under the desk, the latency should be minimal. And that way when you leave with your MacBook, you still have access to your full work flow.
those usb and display switches usually come with an input for a switch button. I think it would be really cool if you figured out the signal required and connected it to a mechanical key with its own little housing
Hi, currently have a 2013 iMac 27" (on my left) and a 2015 iMac 5K 27" (straight ahead). I often 'connect' the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. My new job will force me to have a 'locked down' windows laptop (13" or 15") - likely to be placed on the right side of my desk. 1). I really want to be able to connect this 'locked down' windows laptop to my 5K iMac. Allowing me to switch between remote working and personal / home use. 2). And still be able to use the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. Being able to use speakers, webcam, mac wireless keyboard and mac trackpad. If that is not possible. 3). Could I replace the 2013 iMac with a Apple Studio Display (straight ahead) and still be able to connect both the iMac 5K (moved to the left) and this 'locked down' windows laptop to the Apple Studio Display. Any help would be really useful.
Great Video! But did you try to transfer Data via the Jangly Cable? The Amazon page specificly says that it can't be used for data transfer. I'm using a DELL U2723QE with an included USB hub but it only has one Upstream port for use with a DP (besides the Thunderbolt/USB-C) and I'd like to use two machines with it (Old MacBook, without thunderbolt and a PC)
I like the jerryrigged setup, but gosh, it sounds like a huge bother. There are brilliant monitors for less than half the price of the studio display which have built in kvms, but you know that. Overall, nice video.
This was amazing as this is the exact use-case that I want to replicate. So, to be clear, you have to switch two USB switches to go from the Mac to the PC? ( I need to order a jangly cable )
Currently I only have one USB-Switch, I have 2 DP switches that each control the input of one of the Studio Displays. With a 2nd USB-Switch I could switch each Studios Displays hardware features (webcam, hub, speakers) individually as well. Hope that answers your question and thanks! 🙂
@@CheeseTurbulence That does actually. So in short, you just need one jangly cable for the display that you wish to use the additional hardware on? (And a straight DP to USB-C cable would work fine for the other one). Very much appreciate your video.
Sorry for the late reply, you do actually need the jangly cable. For some reason the Studio Display remains black if the USB is not plugged in. However, it doesn't care WHERE the USB is plugged in as long as it's connected to something. Which is very interesting, never thought about that until now 🤔
@@CheeseTurbulence I've managed to connect other devices (My Samsung device for example) with a straight USB-C cable and it worked. For the times it didn't work, I unplugged the display and plugged it back in, and then it worked. (WHY Apple could you not give us a power-switch?)
You could simply use, both monitor on mac, and open remote desktop on mac to use the windows pc.. 😄, same keyboard and mouse without any extra cable or connectors
I don't have anything to measure it, but I love it. Looks great on all of my other Apple devices but that's kind of an obvious result. I don't print photos though so I can only report on digital results.
@@CheeseTurbulence thanks so much! Ordered one and it works perfectly! This is a game changer as I’d been using a Thunderbolt card and can now ditch that and use a neat ITX case which looks far better sitting next to the Mac.
I bought an studio display thinking my job will switch my work machine to a MacBook 🤡 didn’t happened now I’m stuck with the studio display, I have a personal MacBook so it doesn’t bother me, but still it’s very annoying to use with a windows machine, I use the type C included to connect to my dock and it works. Will try brigadier but my take on this is don’t do it, studio display is super cool but unless you need the extra resolution, I’d rather pick an oled gaming monitor or something more cheaper. Great video, super interesting
yeah it's pretty much always the cable's fault with display issues. it's a problem for both DisplayPort and HDMI at this point. The high bandwidth needs of top tier displays are not being validated for. very very annoying. I don't think I would ever do my setup like this (I clicked on the video because I do use both a mac mini and windows desktop) But I do think the studio display offers and interesting package. If apple did put in the effort to officially maintain a real (even very basic) windows compatibility that fixes the ridiculous need to power cycle them nobody would argue the capabilities of the setup. (if the bug is caused by the KVM though it's on you 😅)
Do you know if this will work with one studio display? Meaning hooking up a windows laptop and macbook without switching cables? Ps new sub your vids are great and your jokes since 2021 are funny 😂😂
I gave it a try with my Studio Display/PC combo and it actually only let me adjust the brightness of the display up to the highest brightness value set when the display was connected to my Mac earlier if that makes sense. So if the Studio Display was set to 80% brightness, Twinkletray would show that as 100% on Windows.
The side flipping seems more like a macOS bug. I don't have these displays but I also have a dual display setup. You can quickly go to settings and flip the status bar over from one display to the other. The black screen issue I personally do not have, however I know for the fact that windows does put the displays into some state where it disables HDCP so that macOS stops playing videos on some streaming services. It could be a somewhat similar issue here as well. Worth comparing HDCP settings in that regard.
The major problem with connecting a Mac to a display switcher is that if the mac isn't actively on a screen it goes to sleep. Which ruins anything like a plex server that might be running on it. I fiddled with it for so long but there's just no way thanks to mac os it requires an active hdmi to be connected in order to not go to sleep when it's closed even if plugged in. There is no setting to disable this. So be aware.
Does the jangly cable without the dp switcher allow 5k 60 hz on the windows desktop? I’ve been desperately searching for solution that will work on lg 5k monitor without using macOS 😅
@@CheeseTurbulence thanks! Quick last question, does this solution still allow you to use the thunderbolt/usb ports on the monitors as hubs as well? (Say if you have other peripherals attached to the monitor do they work with both systems in passthrough?)
@@Bl1nkSt3rYes! I have it setup like this 🙂 my mouse, keyboard, and headset receiver are plugged into the left screen. So when I switch the USB-Switch, I change all the peripherals attached to it.
Awesome! ❤ last question @ 4:48 mark. What cables in your diagram did you use for the DP to USBc to the MacBook? (I’ve had multiple cables and just want to make sure the resolution doesn’t drop , cause some cables are limited) . (Side note just ordered the jangly, but looking at the other side of the DP switcher. From DP switcher to MacBook). Any difference between the cablematters and club3d one?
@@CheeseTurbulence appreciate all this dialogue :) i haye struggled with this setup issues for quite a while. any way you can show your setup from behind left monitor to usb switch? or is the monitors smart enough to know which route to take without toggling the usb switch??? thanks again! and i subscribed to your channel !!!
I used a much cheaper set up.My M1 mac mini and HP Z1 workstation with 2 27" monitors.Logitech app allows me to drag files from one to the other, but thats as far as I've needed to go for my own needs,I tend to watch instruction videos on one while following on the other for music, art and similar.
Yea I was thinking about buying 2 of the Pro XDR displays because I wanted the 32in and the display quality but then I saw the pricing. A base Pro XDR display is $5000 but you have to get the stand too which is $1000. Then I always get AppleCare which is $500 pre monitor. Lastly I need 2 so the total is $13000. That is a down payment of a car or the cost of a car back then.😂
I have the same jangly cable but I was just wondering whether you’ve run into issues with windows PC occasionally flickering and turning into a black screen until you do a hard restart where I either need to unplug the cable or turnoff and on the studio display for it to show the screen again. It can happen 20 mins into use or randomly an hour or more. Does this happen to you? I’m on the 2nd cable replacement
Uh oh, this hasn't happened to me yet (and hopefully won't). I spend most of my time on macOS though. But I did edit this entire video on Windows for up to 8h in one session and so far didn't encounter this.
@@CheeseTurbulence Crap lol. So I basically plug the jangly cable display port into my graphics card and the USB one into one of the nearby USB ports at the back. I bought my cable awhile back so Im not really sure I can ask for a replacement now but yeah first cable i got, it worked but was more sensitive to getting black screen flickers and second one was much rarer with flickers with the black screen but more stable. It’s only when I either unplug the cable and plug it back in or power off and on the studio display (either work) that it’d show up again but at full brightness obviously. Def keep a lookout on yours. A miracle you went 8 straight hours without a single flicker.
Idk this seems like a weird way to do this. I would just get a really powerful pc and run VMs of windows and macOS on Linux. Although I'm not sure if that could interfere with the features on the studio display. I just wouldn't get a studio display so that's why I would just run VMs.
Hello! I had a question if you don't mind. its about your MacBooks pro battery life. does it the health decrease like 5 or 6% every like 9 months? I got a MacBook Pro m2 Pro 9 months ago, and it is my first MacBook, and I'm curious about how long the battery health lasts. Thank you!!
My battery health is at 85% and I bought it in November os 2022. It still lasts pretty good but it does concern me a bit as well, but it is plugged in every single day and being used.
I mean one of those new 4K 32" QD OLEDS (especially the Asus with it's KVM) would've been a much better setup but hey it's your setup man, burn that budget as you want
Just one thing though, he wouldn't get the 218 ppi (5K retina) with anything else than the studio display but yes it would be a lot easier to connect and set up.
@@krunge True, but honestly the difference in PPI isn't enough to offset the cheaper price (2 thirds), more features (KVM...) and the much better HDR colors and OLED contrast. Oh not to mention the 240hz that makes everything feel snappy. The PPI of the studio is something really cool, but that display is way too overpriced for just that one feature, especially if you're not fully locked in the apple ecosystem (he still uses windows too)
@@houssamalucad753 I agree, and until recently I had 5K iMacs for years and loved the high ppi especially since I'm a UI designer. But after switching to a Mac Studio and a good quality 32" 4K (as I also need to use it with a PC) I'm starting to getting used to the "low" ~140 ppi.
I wish there was a way to use both mac OS and windows OS on a single Operating system using one monitor. By that, I mean if I'm running mac OS, I can quickly switch to windows OS by going to mission control. You can do this already with Parallels for mac but that's virtualization. I don't want to virtualize windows OS on a mac computer, I want to run windows natively from a separate dedicated PC that's more powerful. Before Apple transitioned to silicon chips, you could probably have ran windows OS as a primarily computer and virtualized mac OS using a virtual machine and switch between the operating systems with ease without too much performance loss (since unlike Apple hardware, you can get more powerful PCs for lesser cost). But now that mac OS use ARM architecture now, that's no longer possible. Why do I want to run two Operating systems on a single monitor? I'm not too sure why, but I just find dual monitor setups overwhelming and distracting.
I use a app to integrate periferics that's call synergy,, and a setup o a MacBook on the bottom and a 4k 144hz on top with windows ,, cal digit to the Mac and dp to the 4k and for windows hdmi 2.1, and change on the monitor de imput. and a 3rd monitor to the Mac via dp to
Thanks! Btw you could use Barrier which is an open source/free software that allow you to control many computer inputs from one computer.. that way you don’t need to use the switch unless Barrier stopped working It adds a little bit of delay, but if you install it on windows for the games, you won’t really feel the delay on Mac
the production value of this video is amazing, but this is a seemingly roundabout way of solving a very simple problem. This video is not sharing any good tech advice. My solution to this scenario: 1) Most PC's also have thunderbolt via USB-C. Use a standard usb-c to usb-c cable instead of the jangly cable. Even if you use the jangly cable - this isn't the end of the world. You've got two computers on two screens. 2) Use a software-based KVM like Synergy by Symless. Use the one keyboard and mouse to control both computers including copying/pasting as well as drag/drop between them. 3) Use a common NAS between all the computers. done.
I did something similar but I find far more useful. 3x 27” displays connected to Apple Studio. Then I have 4 other PCs on my network also. All my Windows boxes are running Windows Pro so I can connect to any of them using Remote Desktop on the Mac. This lets me easily flip beteween any of my machines super easy at any time. Throw in Parallels to run Linux and at any one time I can be able to flip any of my monitors to any one five different pcs and any number of VMs. And it all runs super smoothly and i only need one keyboard and mouse. To do some gaming, which is generally not feasible over Remote Desktop, i have my main Windows machine connected to an alternate input on my middle monitor and i can easily switch to that when i need to. I added a usb switch for my keyboard so i can swap to tha computer when i need to game and my mouse can switch to multiple wireless connections. It might not be a simple click of a button to switch, but im generally either working using RDC or im gaming so its not a big deal. To top it off i have a sound mixer so i pipe the sound from my mac and my main pc into my speakers and can have sound from both at the same time. Great if im playing a movie on one of the side monitors while gaming on the middle. Once i had it all setup i was surprised at how seemless it all is. I have some macro keys to flip through all my full screen apps which makes it super easy to change what im seeing. I can configure RDC to use all my screens for a single connection, but i can still flip each monitor to a different view at any time. I typically have something streaming on the left, a view of my main work pc in the midlle, and on the right i’ll cycle between my Mac to see Messages / mail / etc or a second screen of my main pc, or occasionally a view of a linux vm. And it all just works.
This was more than fun, I was seriously glued to my single, 38 inch, LG 38GN950P-B ultragear ultrawide monitor... A little mockery never hurt xD But yes, this was absolutely fun to watch and really interesting too. It sort of is what I'd describe as pioneering in our big tech world. Trying to find a solution for a superficial problem, we created by ourselves. But it can lead to maginificent ideas and solutions in the end, just like this experiment did.
am i the only weirdo who got a macbook pro 16 inch and only uses one screen, no cables, no mouse, the keyboard that comes with it and and an amazing speed... i think im weird maybe
There’s a performance loss to the OS inside parallels. Great for normal usage, not for someone needing as much performance as possible. I tried using it for some engineering programs in college and it couldn’t keep up with bare metal.
@@LandonEmma It’s a paid method of running full Windows on Macs. It has its own drawbacks, but is generally a good solution for many Mac-Windows applications, in which running both operating systems would be beneficial.
You should have bought Samsung ViewFinity 5K monitors - same resolution, better webcam (no center stage in macOS though) but it would have removed the need for the special split cable

I’m doing this this week but with 3 screens (2 Studio Displays + 1 hdmi ASUS gaming monitor), i’ll tell you how it goes but so far so good, jangly cables seems to be working. I’m waiting deliveries for other components (USB hub + DP Switch).
Good luck! 🙂
the difference between the screens is almost certainly an gamma thing. I would recommend you get a colorimeter, a Datacolor Spyder Pro X or equivalent can help you get these 2 displays perfectly tone matched!
That’s a good excuse to finally get one of those, thank you! 😅
Thanks for watching! 🙂
I've done something fairly similar myself with an '09 imac and gotten it to work pretty seamlessly as if it were a normal display. The displays apple put in their computers are truly killer, and I thought it'd be a shame to never use the display of the imac given it was better than my current one (a cheapo acer, the imac was given to me by someone)
iMacs not having a display IN port is fucking criminal

Is it possible to get a old 2014 imac 27 inch 5k and run it on windows with this cable? I am looking for a good monitor for cheap
man I cannot wait for Apple to make a tandem oled studio display with promotion
Thank you for the video. Does the monitor work with its built in spatial speakers when you watch movies from your PC?
Do you only render on your windows machine or do you actually work through parsec?
@@JuanGoreTex I work through parsec! Works very well.
And that way when you leave with your MacBook, you still have access to your full work flow.
if you are a heavy keyboard shortcut user some combinations will be intercepted by MacOS, i.e. it won't be as seemless as RDP from Windows to Windows
those usb and display switches usually come with an input for a switch button. I think it would be really cool if you figured out the signal required and connected it to a mechanical key with its own little housing
That's a great idea, might give that a shot 🙂
@@CheeseTurbulence make a TH-cam short if you do 😊

I did! and it works 😯 I got my mouse and keyboard, as well as the headset audio receiver hooked up to it and they seem to work just fine. 🤔
This sounds like an overengineererd nightmare. One of those adapters will fail and lead you to hrs of troubleshooting .Kiss
Cheeeese! Great vid thanks for the jangly cable, I have needed something like that for my portable monitor for a one cable solution
You're welcome and thanks for watching! 🙂
You could simply use, both monitor on mac, and open remote desktop on mac to use the windows pc.. 😄, same keyboard and mouse without any extra cable or connectors
I tried that and for office work this is fine, but video editing isn't so great as it introduced some delay 🙂
How’s the color accuracy editing photography?
I don't have anything to measure it, but I love it. Looks great on all of my other Apple devices but that's kind of an obvious result.
I don't print photos though so I can only report on digital results.
Hi, how's it going? Hope everything's fine

The ‘jangly’ cable says 4K, does it output to 5k from PC to Studio Display?
It does! 🙂
I don't think I would ever do my setup like this (I clicked on the video because I do use both a mac mini and windows desktop)
But I do think the studio display offers and interesting package. If apple did put in the effort to officially maintain a real (even very basic) windows compatibility that fixes the ridiculous need to power cycle them nobody would argue the capabilities of the setup. (if the bug is caused by the KVM though it's on you 😅)
how did you mount your mac under your desk? I've been wanting to do that but not good at 3d printing nor the keywords to look it up
I got it from Amazon, it was pretty cheap and seems work great. It is 3D printed though: geni.us/KubqqL9
Do you know if this will work with one studio display? Meaning hooking up a windows laptop and macbook without switching cables? Ps new sub your vids are great and your jokes since 2021 are funny 😂😂
Is 5k acutally working on windows? I can only get 4k with the belkin cable.
Works fine with the jangly cable 🙂 I have a 4090 though, not sure how much of an impact that thing has.
I'm loving your videos! Keep doing a great job 😊
Thank you so much! 😄
The latest Beta version 1.16.0 of TwinkleTray supports Apple Studio Display brightness control in Windows
Oh, never heard of that, thanks for letting me know! 🙂
@@CheeseTurbulenceoops typo I meant TwinkleTray not TwinkleDisplay (edited)
@@JazJonFL Google autocorrect directed me to the right place so no worries 😉
I gave it a try with my Studio Display/PC combo and it actually only let me adjust the brightness of the display up to the highest brightness value set when the display was connected to my Mac earlier if that makes sense. So if the Studio Display was set to 80% brightness, Twinkletray would show that as 100% on Windows.
@@JuanGoreTex interesting I guess that’s why it’s still beta. Hopefully they can enhance the work around spoof they used to get this far.
Loved this one! Had my attention throughout.
Thank you! Much appreciated! 🙂
It does work for me, see: 07:07 🙂
I can't guarantee it on the LG 5k but these monitors are apparently quite similar, so maybe worth a shot 😅
Oh I heard about the Logitech app, great reminder, thank you! 🙂
OMG it worked! thank you!!!!!
That is a down payment of a car or the cost of a car back then.😂
Hello! Where did you get the wallet at 2:21 from? 🤔
It's from "Filson" and I believe it's called the "Snap Wallet". Not sure if they still make this exact model (bought it 2-3 years ago in NYC)
Thanks, and 🤞 that it won't break any time soon. I feel these cables are the biggest hit and miss I ever purchase 🙈

Idk this seems like a weird way to do this. I would just get a really powerful pc and run VMs of windows and macOS on Linux. Although I'm not sure if that could interfere with the features on the studio display. I just wouldn't get a studio display so that's why I would just run VMs.
That just looks so sick. Can’t wait to setup my 2 Studio Minitors

Honestly, at this point, I'd just use either OS with an emulator for the other OS.

Thanks! Btw you could use Barrier which is an open source/free software that allow you to control many computer inputs from one computer.. that way you don’t need to use the switch unless Barrier stopped working
It adds a little bit of delay, but if you install it on windows for the games, you won’t really feel the delay on Mac
the production value of this video is amazing, but this is a seemingly roundabout way of solving a very simple problem. This video is not sharing any good tech advice.
My solution to this scenario:
1) Most PC's also have thunderbolt via USB-C.
That's a super cool setup, thanks for sharing 🙂
This was more than fun, I was seriously glued to my single, 38 inch, LG 38GN950P-B ultragear ultrawide monitor... A little mockery never hurt xD
But yes, this was absolutely fun to watch and really interesting too. It sort of is what I'd describe as pioneering in our big tech world. Trying to find a solution for a superficial problem, we created by ourselves. But it can lead to maginificent ideas and solutions in the end, just like this experiment did.
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it this much!

There’s a performance loss to the OS inside parallels. Great for normal usage, not for someone needing as much performance as possible. I tried using it for some engineering programs in college and it couldn’t keep up with bare metal.
