I just came across this when I searched how to use my orbital sander. I wish I would’ve seen this before I started my cabinet project. Almost looks therapeutic the way you do it.

if you read the instructions on the staining can and/or sealant can (either polyurethane or shellac), it says to do this procedure.
Certainly it is a lot of work, but if you consider you do not have to redo this for several years, it is worth the time and effort.
Magnificently very detailed and lots of care. All the more reason to give the job to a professional like you than to attempt it your self. Coming from a DIY guy and professional engineer.

Perfect! I am 24 and just bought my first house. 90s cabinets all over. I am doing this and using Aqua Coat to fill the grain too. Can't wait to start.

Very well done. It is very difficult to really teach well, and you have done exactly that. I will feel much more confident when I do this.
BEWARE! Some panel door are cheap laminated panels and are not hard wood. Striping and sanding the inner panel will result in irreparable damage.

Awesome. I don't trust there all-in-one kits you can buy at home depot where you just end up with cheap paint over wood. It's nice to see how to do refinishing properly.
Now multiply this by 25-30 doors, 10-15 drawers, upper cabinet and lower cabinet bases and you should be done in about 12 to 18 months.
It is a tack cloth or tack rag. It's a cloth that is saturated with paraffin wax, which makes dust particles stick to it
Day one, door one complete. This should only take a month 🤪

This is so helpful but I still have questions regarding the cabinet frames, cabinets with grooved boarders, crown molding, and laminate side walls. I want to try. Maybe I will do my bathroom vanity first and then determine if I tackle kitchen.

Your video caught my eye because I really want to break them down and do it right. I agree with the gloves with any chemical and being a industrial safety coordinator, wouldn't glasses be a good idea? Skin heals, eyes are forever.
I'm about ready to start stripping clear coat and paint off a set of oak wood cabinets. These need a bit of work, but if I do it right they will look amazing. I really appreciate this video instruction, it's probably the best one I've found on the subject. However, my cabinets are a bit more detailed than what's shown in this video. My question is, how do you strip paint and clear coat off these more detailed areas where the milti-tool can't get to? I've seen people use a fine wire wheel or even a brass wire brush, but I worry about taking more material off than necessary. What do you suggest?

dude spray the stain one coat skim second coat full coverage perfect prep but horrible stain and clear application process I spray my clear after wards u can use a siphon to spray stain and airless for clear super fast amazing prep I'm impressed with that!!

Definitely a little overkill. Not the most efficient. You don't need stripper for sure. And 3 different sand papers? Come on.
@@Jaysen6740 this is why if you want it done right... personally I'd use this guy's method, but not everyone wants to slave for the highest quality work. Or pay for it, for that matter.
I think it goes to show how much work you put in makes for the most professional outcome. I personally think he did an amazing job and the customer had to have been impressed.

Thanks for the tutorial. I have a full set of kitchen cabinets to refinish. I could throw up thinking of it lol The cabinets are white now and not sure if I'll go white again or stain. What type of paint would you recommend for it.? I don't want anything that will easy chip, flake or peel off. Almost like it was baked on. Thanks again

Is the first and second step needed? That is the paint removal application and then scraping? Can 36grit sanding do not remove it?

Only question I have is how did you get that pair of pants to remain standing at :25 minute?
I wipe down the inside of the cabinet edges but it leaves a streak and no matter how i wipe it leaves behind a little blotch. How can I avoid this?
I am considering changing out the yellow oak cabinets by sanding them down, bleeching them if needed (to get the yellow out) and then conditioning them and applying a protective coat. I don't know anything about oak but I can tell you I don't like the deep yellow look of them. Is it stained yellow or is it a natural look, I wonder?
Not sure if you’ve done your project yet. Oil based urethane can yellow over time, especially if the room gets lots of sun, it could be that. Try stripping a non-visible or less obvious spot to see if it’s that. Also see if the interior of the cupboard is “less yellow”. If so, that’ll give some impression if there’s any yellowing.
Thank you for the great video! Do you recommend removing the cabinet boxes for refinishing or leaving them in place? I'm guessing it is personal preference but thought a pro may be able to offer some insight based on experience.
I sanded down my cabinets and stained them. On the doors I have small little bumps that look like the measles. Any clue why? I sanded the doors, and used an tack pad to remove any excess dust or shavings.
Send me some pictures of the issues y ou u are having.
Going to this kind of detail would take a month for one set of cabinets!! Unless you have no money or are emotionally attached to your cabinets, I'd give them to a Habitat store and buy new doors.

Don't listen to the rude A-hole. Your question is a valid one if you aren't familiar with the process as it does look like another darker stain. However, it is just a second application of the same Varathane "Kona" stain as the first application. Some people have try to feel superior even if they only know a little, they weaponize what little they know in order to puff themselves up... sad little guy. LOL!

Do you remember what kind of wood this was?
do you apply finish coat like poly to the outside only or can you put it on both. for kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors.
Can you show how you got the backs done too? Did you just do the tops and then turn them over? How did it go on the edges then? Without the back being done step it would be easy to ruin the overall final finishing.

The backs are done the exact same way, by flipping the doors over. We use the 3" ABS pipe to cut spacers out of and lay the doors on those to suspend the doors up from the table to get to the sides. So, you work on one side at a time. When the finishes are completely cured, flip the doors over and repeat the process.
This just gave me an idea, if inexperienced with the shellac painting. Do the backs first, until you're completely comfortable doing it, then do fronts.

how do you do the other side?:
do you wait till one side is completely done and then flip it and do it for the other side? or is there a way to do both sides at once?
We always do one side at a time
Necessary to use that stain remover? what happens if you just try to sand it off with the 80 frit instead?
Chad Beebe. No you don't have to use the paint stripper, but it will take you a lot longer to send the finish off. Also you will be using a lot more sand paper.

I am painting my oak cabinets black. Sanding them down now. Was wondering if I should use a primer or wood conditioner prior to painting. Which works best? I am painting them black.
If you are painting the cabinets do not use wood conditioner. Use primer.
While i never recommend brushing or rolling the paint on the cabinets it is certainly done. However, please consider using an aerosol applied primer instead of brushing or rolling it on.

This is a great video! Do you remove the cabinet crown molding to refinish or sand it in place?
We typically just replace the crown
When you do the end cabinet, the outer face is usually a cheap laminate cover, right? How do you prep that surface differently?
Completely different thing... You would want to find a matching color peel-and-stick laminate sheet; or possibly glue a thin sheet of plywood to it, but not sure how you'd prep the surface for glue to stick, unless the old laminate can come right off.
What sander are you using???
What about the actual cabinet? Removing the doors is easy enough but do you suggest removing the entire cabinet as well?
The cabinet face frames and sides are refinished on site

No need for all this nonsense. It would take a month to do the cabinets in a standard kitchen. Remove the cabinet doors and clean them with mineral spirits. Sand the doors with 220 grit sandpaper and restain.
