A quick and frugal fix for your sofa: 2 big pillow cases for each section made from washed drop cloth canvas. You could paint some stripes or pattern on it, or leave plain. The canvas runs about $10. I’ve used it to make throw pillows, curtains, etc. love love love your channel!!!😍
I have painted fabric on several pieces of furniture. The best approach is that you are " dyeing the fabric". You must spray water on fabric and get wet so it will absorb the paint. Also a must is to water down the chalk paint to watery consistancy , there are several videos out there to watch. Then sand between each coat. When you get the fabric soft like you want, wax the fabric with sealing wax and buff it after that. Good Luck!
Have to say, I am TeamTom on the sofa covers. I honestly don't think that the paint would last well. I cannot sew - my husband does all the alterations and sewing we need - but maybe taking the original covers off and using them as a template for the material would work?? I have always done the bits of sewing I have ever done by hand 😳 and many years ago recovered a floral chair in a furnished flat with some plain material. It worked really well and I was pleased with how it turned out- even though I sewed it all by hand!(I feel I have more control than using a sewing machine!!). The bathroom looks lovely, you have done so well. Good luck with the stairs when you get back to them! 🤩
Karen Harris Me too, #TeamTom. Why not cover it w/ the drop cloth and use bungee cords where the cushion splits are? That way you can sort of detach the drop cloth to launder it.(?)
I’m not great at sewing either so I loved that you shared the paint idea and the issues with it. Your videos are so authentic because you post regardless whether a project turns out perfect or not. I’m with those who recommended not traveling at this time. I know it’d be nice to get away but instead maybe find ways to relax and unwind at home. Either way, take care and God bless!
I watched a TH-cam DIY this week, where someone had a fabric chair, and they wanted to try to use chalk paint on it, for a faux finish, leather look, and feel; sealing the chair with chalk paint wax sealant. The DIYer said the end result gave the finish the same feel as leatherette, and the chair looked amazing!
Tom is a very patient, kind, hard working man. He said he is tired. Let him take a break from so many projects and do something fun. Stay home and stay safe.
I painted a velvet Victorian chair with acrylic craft paint. I watered it down and sanded between each of the 3 or 4 coats. Everyone who has sat in it cannot believe the fabric was painted. No after treatment, and no color came off on in clothing. As soon as I saw how thick the paint was going on,I knew it would not feel nice and Tom would claim a victory. Now a drop cloth is a good idea
This is the way to go! Use the fabric as a loose pattern. You do not have to do the tucks and trim. You probably don't even need to sew if you have a staple gun. Wrap it like a present. Add more batting if you need to even out where it is tucked. You can do this! Nothing to lose by trying and way less time and elbow grease than the paint method.
Great idea Dawn !! I’m all for trying something new, especially if it’s easier. 😀 It looks better and you can toss a throw blanket temporarily on it if you want it to be even softer. Aesthetically better than the flowers. I love your positive spirit also!
Small towns have asked that travelers stay home. Just a thought as you decide, here is an example today on Facebook from McCall, Idaho, a small town: On Mar. 18, 2020, the State of Idaho adopted federal guidelines to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. This includes avoiding discretionary travel. During these unprecedented times we seek to find a balance of economic, physical, environmental, and emotional health for all. To act as a cohesive community and to protect each other, we are respectfully asking that no visitation happen at this time. "We simply don't have enough stores, healthcare providers, medical tools or first responders to take care of an increase in population right now," McCall Mayor Bob Giles said. "We need to protect people's public health and safety as a top priority in our area and for the future."
I'm with Tom about the couch, use material. In the long run it will be more comfortable and with kids, would probably last longer. I agree with others who have posted, while traveling sounds more fun than staying home, finding supplies in different towns and states could be iffy. We are in AZ with very few cases right now but things are shutting down and it is hard to get the food and supplies we would like because hoarding is huge. If there is a lock down for weeks where you travel too what are you going to do with the kids, they could get really bored. At least at home there is lots of room to run around and play and your family is nearby.
You might rethink your traveling a bit several full timers are nervous because many parks have closed as several camping sites AND you’ll need to take extra supplies. So be sure to call ahead to get a site and check to be sure you have a spot. There is nothing wrong with painting furniture. After it dries get wax paper and a hot iron and press over the sofa to soften it👍🏻😁
Team Dawn on this one. She was correct that there was nothing to lose by giving it a try. And I agree with her that it depends on the brand of paint and how it is applied. I've seen it work great on DIY videos.
If you use Annie Sloan paint you're also supposed to use clear wax to soften up the paint and seal it. I'm sure you won't be able to convince Tom to give it a 2nd try but maybe you can try again in the future on a smaller piece. Maybe experiment on the bench seat you removed from the dinette area. Good luck!
Please stay home...the less people out and about, the less strain on resources. Our truck drivers need the roads clear, truck stops stocked, hotel rooms as needed, and the fuel supply to get much needed supplies to medical facilities and groceries to stores. Many areas may feel that this isn't a big deal and not really affecting them, but other areas are REALLY hurting and need all of us to stay out of the way.
I applaud your attempts at keeping busy, after 7 days of being inside most of the time avoiding people I'm so past this all. its great to see you both are making the best out of a bad situation.... a bright spot in a grim week. thank you!!
The state of California where I live, is not allowing for any travel, even within the state. Not a good time to travel. Check with the state you want to go to
There are all sorts of warnings out there about staying home and not traveling. Further, most businesses and restaurants have been shut down to prevent the spread of the virus. To me, this is NOT a time to take a family trip.
I like the idea to replace it with a futon so then you don't have to put your matress on the floor. Glad you're staying home. Me and my 4 children were self isolating (except for me going to the grocery weekly). My husband was continuing to work, but he is no longer on the schedule for an undetermined amount of time. Please pray for our finances that will now be seriously lacking. Love you guys too!
I think it’s great that you take on these diy projects and instead of getting discouraged you kid around about how it works out. You crack me up. I’m also getting interested in decluttering so I’m watching lots of your videos. I’m excited about eating the frogs! I think it’s got great potential and tried it out this morning! That was a huge frog and now it’s history! Yay!
Add annie sloan wax to soften. The idea with the chalk paint is to actually dye the fabric so it's definitely better to water it down. It usually takes 4 coats or more. So see if the furniture wax softens it.
The fabric painting actually worked better than I thought and I can see the potential. I had no idea about the sanding part and it really changed the finish. Camper is looking so awesome. I agree about having a flat mirror, if you don’t need the storage.
I actually used that same exact paint on our sofa. I did water the paint down andI think I did 3 coats total. It looked great at first but worn off gradually. I think I used the wrong wax. I don't think I'd recommend it though bc it didn't hold up long term. But again it could've been the wax I used. For reference we were a family of 6 at the time and it was our only place to sit and we used it for 2 years.
I dont know when this was filmed, but it’s really unsafe to travel right now, maybe your are healthy, but you could carry the virus for up to 2 weeks and not know it and give it to somebody with a weaker immune system. If you have not been quarantine for 14 days, I would not get in contact with anybody, becose right now you cant know if you are hosting the virus, especially since you came back from traveling recently. I hope you all stay safe, isolation right now is the only tool we have to slow down the virus and protect the general population.
I love Dawn videos but all the Tom/Dawn or Dawn/Diana videos are so fun too. I'm so happy it is such a family affair. I agree with everyone, stay safe and healthy. I really appreciate your videos that keep us all motivated, distracted and laughing during a weird time. Thank you, thank you!
Georgia is shutting down restaurants and no dine-in some have take out. The grocery stores have maybe 1/3 of their normal stock and most of that isn't your everyday food. This also means there is very little traffic since businesses are closing. I wouldn't try traveling at this time and I haven't even mentioned the virus dangers.
I like the couch from a distance. Seems like a lot of work for this technique but so is upholstering. Good luck with it. I work at a nursing home so I'm working this weekend and grateful for it!! God bless all~
I would have tried painting the sofa, too. I’ve read that adding fabric medium (found by the little bottles of paint at craft stores) to the paint may help, though I have not tried it. One thought would be to order 2 narrow twin mattresses on Amazon and use that as a sofa, would be easy to sew canvas slip covers for each piece and use as extra sleeping space. Love your positive outlook!Seems like a good time to stay close to home. We’ve been social distancing for a week and are trying to avoid a grocery shop for as long as possible, assuming that every person we may encounter there may be infected. Not living in fear, just trying to give healthcare workers and those infected a fighting chance with a system that could soon be overwhelmed.
I am team Dawn on this one. You can paint fabric with great results! I painted a fabric chair in our fifth wheel a couple years ago and it looks great and has held up with no problems. It went from a darker green checkered pattern to a simple lighter tan color. I used an $8 can of mistinted paint from home depot, water, and fabric medium. The fabric medium is like magic, it makes the fabric soft and not hard a crunchy like you would think painted fabric would feel like. It took me 3 coats sanding between each coat, but it was well worth it in the end. I'm sure whatever you decide to do it will look awesome, just like the rest of your camper. Good Luck!
So love u guys! We r definitely living in strange times when the WHOLE world is in the same boat. Thanks for sharing your lives with all of us! Oh, I did think the couch was worth trying out the paint first bc it's probably gonna be pretty hard to duplicate all those tufts and corners. 💗
If you sew loops onto your towels they will not come off when you hit a bump. This works great in our RV. Love watching you and Tom and all your projects.
How could you have known without trying? Way to go for giving it a chance! But I’m with Tom. Of course I’m an interior designer though. You two are awesome! I love your spirit!! 👍🏼
The full time RV’ers on TH-cam are talking about not having places to stay on the road right now. Hopefully this will be a distant memory soon. Camper looks great!
I'm with team Tom about the upholstery. I'm a bus driver, so I've been off all week. I've done some decluttering and deep cleaning this week. I need to focus on my sewing and crafting area. I'm by myself, so motivation isn't high. However, I do know I've got ALOT to declutter. Another pair of hands would be great, but I don't know if my son will ever be able to drive here. I heard there may be driving restrictions. I enjoy seeing what you do with your space. Thanks for sharing
Ha! I don't have any extra time. I already work at home as a freelance editor. So I work 6 days a week. But I'm not complaining. I'm glad to have work. As for the sofa, I think you should cover it. You don't have to do the tufting or even the divisions between the cushions. Just make it straight across from one edge to the other. It will look more streamlined and modern that way. I would even put a thick quilt batting around the cushions before putting the fabric on. That will even out the surface.
I've seen fabric being painted but the fabric is wet first and the paint slightly thinned so that it is more like dying the fabric rather than painted. Good for you to try it the color is lovely!
we just got done switching the kids' bedroom with ours and moving all things over. Next step is revamping my kitchen and daily routine/schedule for the next few weeks while we deal with being stuck at home. edited to add. totally team Tom on the couch. I don't believe I ever thought that was a good idea.
We just used a grey fitted sheet on our couch. Made it easy to take off and shake crumbs, sand etc off and replace at camp. Then pull off and wash when we got home. We camped in a 26 ft camper with 7 kids, fun times😁
Hi guys. Looking good! We hung a hanging clothes rod in our trailer shower, up near the ceiling, for coats and shirts and it works great. We take the clothes down to travel or shower and lay them on the bed, has been super helpful.
I recovered our couch in our camper by using a microsuede futon cover and upholstery tacks. It was the easiest way. I imagine whatever you do will turn out great!
Team tom -but I am a sewing person. But also remember sometimes done is better the perfect. But I felt this same way when I made my daughters wedding dress. The first day I just cried it was so over whelming. By the way it turned out beautiful. I learned so much on that dress.
I’m working on my stairs! I removed the carpet, underlay and tacks and have spent 4 days removing paint and sanding it. I’m hoping that one more day of sanding will do it. I’m going to paint the risers and varnish the threads. I put it off for 6 months after dry lining and getting the walls plastered and painting as I couldn’t face more work and dust! I’m glad I did as now I’m enjoying the work, but I hope the messy part will be over today! My partner would help but I want this to be my project, he is painting the spare room instead. Being at home is a bonus to home improvement. Keep safe. You are a great team, my partner and I watch together. 😄
I think the spray water makes it softer I am on Team Dawn! Dawn you have a lot of patience with him! Also stay home! Plenty of time to camp after all this is over. Please
Dawn, I love creative new solutions so I applaud you for trying to refresh the couch by painting it. Totally worth a shot! You guys do a great job with all your projects! Keep up the good work! (Maybe take a day off first though - you've both earned it!)
If you have not started the upholstering project. I have been sewing since I was in my teens. I can make suits and window treatments. Then I took an upholstery class. I finished the project with help from my hubby's muscled (lots of pulling the fabric), but it was the hardest project ever taken on and I am a do it yourselfer. So I suggest a lot of research before proceeding. Looking forward to seeing what you decide and finished product. Stay well!
Hearing Tom... I keep thinking of Diana's parents driving home and "the optimism going north" along with them. 😆 As a seamstress myself I would definitely try the paint first too! But just take those cushion covers apart and use them as patterns. It'll look great when you're done. It will just take patience. My dad says, "Do you know how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
This weekend? Nailing down a good house sanitizing routine with supplies we have. Husband works in grocery stores and deemed as essential/emergency employee so he's out there exposed 4 days a week. Son is in retail at a store that claims it is essential (craft store) so he has to go to work 3 days a week. Good thing I'm a stay at home housewife and ok with being at home all the time 'cuz I have to disinfect EVERYTHING. LOL. Also in MN here (Twin Cities area) and hoping you'll consider staying home for awhile.
you two are just so awesome! mahalo. I also so appreciate you telling us about the different personalities of your fathers. I had the grumpy father. Hooray for Dawn and her optimistic Dad! For me, at 64, grump comes out first .... then, after some good self talk .... optimism returns .... aloha plenty! and carry on!
Love Tom's honesty. Yep takes 4 coats ...u get it all over you. U bump into everything in a small space. Yep a painted couch looks like what you would expect it to look like. 😆 🤣 😂
Since your towels are falling, you could also sew a few inch strip of ribbon along the edge of your towel at the midpoint and sew the ribbon on both ends securely. It creates a small loop to place over the hooks. The weight of the towel should keep them in place. The bathroom is looking great!
My brother and SIL have been full-time RVers with their 5 kids. They use quick-dry microfiber towels in their bathroom, a different color for each person.
Dawn, I'm confident you can recover the couch. You've impressed me with your ingenuity. Try peeling back the fabric, ditch the piping. Think how dining chairs are upholstered. Lots of staples. Maybe add more foam so the separate cushions look goes away. You've got this, girlfriend!
I am glad that I watched you paint the couch, I have been thinking of doing that to a double recliner that the foster kids have ruined. I do not think that I will try that.
We tore out all of our tile flooring, tile counter (both with cement and wire mesh), tile back splash and carpet. Just put in new flooring, counter and stove. Now just have to do "finishing touches" mud and tape, tile back splash, install hood above stove, install under sink plumbing and faucet, new lighting around the house, etc. It's a lot more, but after tearing out everything, it looks 100% better already.

Agree with Tom. Earlier poster mentioned using current fabric as pattern to cut new material; maybe that would make things less difficult?
Yes! Blaine county in Idaho has several cases because it is a tourist place and people are still going there. This is the time to stay home for sure.
Exactly! It doesn't hurt to TRY something new to see if you like it or not and getting crap about it the whole time is rude and not helpful at all.
Good luck!
Stay home. We have no idea how bad this could get. Just stay safe.
Awe Tom. You are working so hard. Please get your rest and take good care of yourself. You do such good work.
You guys are so awesome together! This is how my husband and I work together.
Kudos to Dawn for giving it a go! It’s great to see things coming along....
It never hurts to try something new! You remained extremely gracious, Dawn 🙂
Yay!
My daughter in law did a beautiful job painting her fabric dinning chairs. Probably just need more sanding. I’m on Team Dawn.
This probably means I am an old lady, but I think that old couch looks GREAT in that updated trailer!!!
Knowing how much work it is to do upholstery, I would totally try painting the fabric first!! Team Dawn.
Trucks and tractors isn't mindless, it's definitely. Worth the watch.
The washable baskets 🧺
Perfection!!!
TEAM TOM!! I love how Tom is communicating "I told you so" without actually saying it!!
Tom face speaks volumes, got to agree with him about the couch it looks awful. Stay safe. Love watching your videos.
The couch looks cool in the video... I don’t know how different in real life!! I totally get looking for a non sewing solution to try!
How could you have known without trying? Way to go for giving it a chance! But I’m with Tom. Of course I’m an interior designer though. You two are awesome! I love your spirit!! 👍🏼
I’ve been quarantined for the next week and I’m rewatching your camping videos to vicariously enjoy the outdoors 😉
Check out "Garden Answer" channel for flowers and green growing stuff. So pretty.
The full time RV’ers on TH-cam are talking about not having places to stay on the road right now. Hopefully this will be a distant memory soon. Camper looks great!
We are. Rest/truck stops are still open, thankfully. All else fails, dry camping in a Walmart parkinglot.
I am all for easy DIY this isn't one of them. Team Tom.❤
I painted a red ottoman white with chalk paint. I watered my paint down pretty good and did several coats. It still looks good.
I deep cleaned and painted my entry and laundry room last weekend. So refreshing!
Team Tom on the couch. Painted fabric just seems odd. The camper is looking great. Appreciate you guys.
Clearing trees and staying home. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy .
Thanks for a great video...helping me to stay “normal.” ❤️
Glad you're staying home for now. Stay well.
I have used chalk paint for many years and this is one project I have always wanted to do. It is a great idea!!
I think the spray water makes it softer I am on Team Dawn! Dawn you have a lot of patience with him! Also stay home! Plenty of time to camp after all this is over. Please
Team Dawn because why wouldn’t you try it? It’s fun to try new things 😃 Yay Dawn!!!!! 💕
Stay well!
I LOVE this video, so fun, cute and informative! My favorite is.....TOM! Love this guy!
Hearing Tom... I keep thinking of Diana's parents driving home and "the optimism going north" along with them. 😆
As a seamstress myself I would definitely try the paint first too! But just take those cushion covers apart and use them as patterns. It'll look great when you're done. It will just take patience. My dad says, "Do you know how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
A for creativity, Dawn. I was crossing my fingers that it would work! It looked cool on camera.
I see storage space under the stairs if it's possible. Love you two. Thanks for including us in your world. Praying for you and your family.
I am taking my kids this week to the park to go hiking , walk trails, playin the creek. This forest is 3 hrs from our home.
Just heard a full time RVer say lots of campgrounds are closing. PA has closed all the rest stops on the interstate! Good luck!
Tom's Stairs = Dawn's Couch Upholstering. :D Thinking of the end result = hopeful motivation! Thanks for continuing your videos!!
Sewing, getting a Beagle puppy, decluttering and so much more! Love how the camper has turned out! Plus it's so pretty!!!
Please stay home. This current situation changes daily. Please protect your family and Diana's new little baby coming.
you two are just so awesome! mahalo. I also so appreciate you telling us about the different personalities of your fathers. I had the grumpy father. Hooray for Dawn and her optimistic Dad! For me, at 64, grump comes out first .... then, after some good self talk .... optimism returns .... aloha plenty! and carry on!
Painting fabric can turn out beautifully.
We've been spring cleaning a bit 👍it is gratifying
Seen the couch thing before but have to agree with Tom❤️🇨🇦
