Do it yourself Solar Night Light using TP4056 Board

  • I used TP4056 lithium ion battery charging board on this Solar Night Lamp project with Auto On/Off.
    There are two types of TP4056 board, one with battery protection, the other doesn't have. I used the board with battery protection.
    I hacked the TP4056 board in such a way that the built in protection circuit becomes auto on/off switch by putting jumper wire on Pin 5 of 8205 MOSFET to the blocking diode towards negative output of the solar panel. So when there is sunlight received by Solar panel, pin5 of 8205 mosfet is negative which turning the LED light Off. When there is no sunlight being received by solar panel, the pin5 will be pulled up to postive voltage by the internal resistance of the board itself, turning the 8205 MOSFET on and the LED light on.
    I used 6V/3.5W (0.54Amps) solar panel, 3 pcs 1W LED with 5Ohms/2W in series limiting the current to 0.20Amps total. This is enough that the light lasts overnight. Doubling the battery is preferred as the LED light will consumed around 2.4Ah of capacity of the battery. Solar panel will harvest energy around 2.9Ah assuming of 5 hours full sunlight exposure of the solar panel.
    PS: In case that auto on/off function did not work, add a 1N4001 (1Amp/50V) diode in series with the solar panel to the input of TP4056 board. You can connect either on the negative or positive side of the solar panel.
    Happy DIY

    Took me 3-4 modules to make it work. Tried with 3-4 modules. Some worked, some didn't. Thanks a lot for this sheer intelligence...! However the over discharge protection doesn't work.

    I needed to study this a bit. Looks like you may lose battery protection if you directly connect the Out- to the battery? The over Over Current pin 5 normally prevents the battery from over charging and we sort of hi-jacked the battery protection MOS FET and we are using it for Load. It seems like this design would not stop over current and over charging so protection is lost? Really cleaver use of the 1N4001 diode on Solar- ... I just had to test this and I love this solution! I'm going to look at your other designs. Thanks again.

    The charge protection is bypassed. The module is for 1S not 2S. Solar cell will fry your charge protection chip. Will certainly do that with the 18650 cells without charge protection. Be safe read the TP4056 specs.

    Hello Edmund, I tried your circuit with almost the same module, mine has mini-usb. It charges and turns on at night, but it does not shut off with the dw01. It ran the battery down to 2 volts when I noticed it. Does your circuit shut down at low Voltage?

      Terminals are switched and in my opinion protection is working as On/Off switch. You can add additional Mosfet N -channel transistor to save protection. That additional cable from pin 5 goes then to the gate of transistor and between out + and out - you should add then drain and source of that Mosfet. Diodes with resistor will go between + and drain. You need to remember to use low gate treshold transistor (for example AO3400A or other). Battery will go then normal BAT+ and BAT -

    • @allumallt
      @allumallt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if the output is above 4V. If you are using the 3.7V battery then you will need a 5V step up boost voltage regulator. 5-6V is best for the pump. Over 7V will shorten the pump life shorter.
      I also have water pump wired directly to the 6V 3.5W solar panel for my three bird baths.

    how if led is 30watt, what must i change?

      All things, because TP4056 is only up to 1A current and max 5,5V input. Buy better solar panel - for example 50W, 12V (or higher voltage if needed), and solar charge controller than you can use 30W LED. Also depends for what voltage is your 30W led bulb made.
