We Dutch get all warm and cozy on the inside from seeing stuff like this... Not. But just to be real: this is what happens when governments ignore water management... Footage like this has been on Dutch television since atleast the 90's, after several floodings which partly where in the Netherlands and surrounding countries.
Laurens A. The thing is, it’s not really negligence. Ellicott City had had only a handful of floods over the past few centuries. Now suddenly two huge floods in short succession. It might be climate change, maybe it’s just random chance, but in a nutshell, until recently, there was absolutely no reason to expect such a thing. Now they town is considering demolishing a few historic buildings and expanding the riverbed at great cost, cutting off a limb to save the patient.
@@tookitogo It's just too much rain for the system to handle with upstream development as a major factor. I wonder why no one has thought of digging deeper into the existing canals through the town to handle the water flow.

9:16 if I'm remembering correctly I've been in that building twice(after both floods), both times to check to see if the fire/sprinkler systems were still functional. Seeing the department store floor completely obliterated after everything was cleared out was mind blowing, seeing this with it full of water is even more eerie. The last 2 were really bad, I remember driving to see the previous flood damage and there were still cars in the river.

Even without particularity cinematic camerawork like your other videos, this is still one of your best. You didn't need any background music, just the natural noises of the aftermath, and the fire alarm alone creates as much as a creepy atmosphere as any of your dead mall videos. Holy shit. Glad you're okay. A couple of years ago there was flooding really bad by my parent's house. The bridge (which was - I'm guessing - about fifteen feet high) was flooded over. My car turned into a boat temporarily when I was trying to get to work.
I’m on the opposite side of the country and 24 hours later, and yet. And yet. Wow. My heart was pounding like mad all the way through the video. Unreal. I’ve heard you say that when you’re in the moment, you’re almost fearless. Seeing this, and how you managed to keep your cool, I believe it! Damn. It’s been maybe fifteen minutes since I watched, and my heart’s still pounding. I can’t even imagine how you were feeling. Incredible work, Dan.
Very scary, poignant video. I read that nobody was hurt, I hope it remains that way. The image of the two blue cars is just incredible; how does that happen?! Not to mention the cafe and shops full of debris, the spray painted marks on front of the stores, the freaking footage of the flood itself. Thanks for documenting.
Narrow view, buddy. The town has survived several hundred years, and expects some flooding now and again, but not the likes of these two massive floods (2016 and now 2018) . Poorly planned developments and building upstream from the former mill town has stripped away natural flood barriers and has graded the ground slopes poorly. Add to that the changing weather patterns from, among other reasons, climate change, and you get this disaster. It is a myopic view to blame the residents for rebuilding, as hundreds of years of previous history leads them to believe they could safely do so after the 2016 flood. Knowledge is power, dude. Get some next time before flinging blanket commentary out into the world. Thanks.
I'm in tears, Dan. Great coverage. Hard to imagine I was there only a couple weeks ago. Praying for those who lost their businesses, homes, and livelihood after only just reopening. I especially feel for a man who waved us into his freshly open cosmetics store who beamed with the pride of his business (8:58). Hope everyone in the community is safe and that the neighborhood is able to rebuild. I know you don't go out west too much but there is a town in Oklahoma that is self abandoning because they are having so many earthquakes as a result of the storing of used frack water deep underground. I'm no scientist and even I understand the concept that filling in fault lines with water will result in pressure forcing once undetectable seismic activity to release violently along the very old fault lines in that area. I think you would be an incredible person to cover that story, there must be an incredible amount of before and after footage of this town and there is no doubt real time footage could be easily obtained. People are abandoning their neighborhoods and homes because there are hundreds of earthquakes a day and everything is crumbling. We have mastered creating dead malls, now we are creating dead cities. Stay safe, and wishing for power for Puerto Rico months after their disaster.

PS : It's amazing that the police didn't stop you and the other people from going in... In the 2016 flood, there were police vehicles and barriers blocking the bridge into Old Ellicott City...

It must be like walking through an apocalypse. I remember what it was like after Superstorm Sandy and we got 6 feet of water where I am. It was awful. My heart goes out to Maryland.
Damn, I remember this. I was in Frederick and we were having a cookout. It didn’t look like it was going to rain until the late afternoon when it began pouring down hard. It was really scary hearing how Elicott flooded within a few hours. I’m sorry for anyone who experienced the flooding or lost someone from it.
This happened in my city a decade ago this summer. You don't think a little river that flows through your town can be so destructive. Thankfully in my town they knew the flooding was coming so they cleared all the streets from cars and other possible debris. My dad's office was across the street from the river and the drains in his building were backed up from the water and the windows were all exploded out from the water pressure. Keep your dogs inside the house and away from new people because they can get stressed out and bite people then they might have to be euthanized. Sounds like this city had a flood a few years back and people are willing to rebuild. Great coverage dude.

As a Floridian, my favorite part of disasters like these are how people come together in the end and help each other. If cities want to solve this problem, they need to devote funds to improving infrastructure!
My heart goes out to these poor people, two big floods in two years? It reminds me of Moore, OK, they get hit by a tornado, rebuild and then get hit again. Major respect for Maryland and always rebuilding the beautiful downtown after something so tragic.
This is the 2nd time this has happened in less than 2 years... honestly they can't even call it a natural disaster because the way they built Ellicott city it's a funnel that ends on mainstreet and will continue to happen.
Also 2ppl died in the 2016 flood, so far no deaths have been reported, one person is missing and they are currently searching for him.. It's also happening because of the community expanding and houses being built surrounding Ellicott city, tearing the trees and soil down that helped prevent this... it's honestly all due to humans, and climate change.
Ellicott City flooding has nothing to do with climate change. This travesty is due to over-development around an area which was a poor choice to begin with. Old Ellicott City is basically the bottom of a canyon that ends at The Patapsco River. Upstream land that was protected wetlands had their zoning changes to R4 or became parking lots. There is nowhere left for the water to be absorbed. Sadly, this will become a problem every 5-10 years from here on out.
Oh Dan, it's devastating and heartbreaking. It looks like the aftermath of when Harvey or Ike hit here. The news said no one was hurt. Thank God. But, it really makes you want to cry. Doesn't it? Stay safe and don't fall down a hole or something.
Looking at the water rushing into the city looks more like a Tsunami then a Flood. I am from New Orleans La and I know the power of the water. My prayers are with all in Ellicott City Md.
That's great the water left quickly, recovery can begin immediate. In Houston we had standing water for weeks and the amount of loss was incredible, still recovering in fact.

I'm guessing the merchants were unable to get flood insurance after what happened 2 years ago..so probably lost everything. How extremely awful for the people that live, work, and have businesses in Ellicott City.
Flooding is so destructive and awful. It makes me sad to see these places destroyed by the rushing water. I lived through some serious flooding in TX, so my heart goes out to all those who are affected. I hope they can recover and rebuild.

In the 2016 flood, there were police vehicles and barriers blocking the bridge into Old Ellicott City...

It must be like walking through an apocalypse. I remember what it was like after Superstorm Sandy and we got 6 feet of water where I am. It was awful. My heart goes out to Maryland.

Damn, I remember this. I was in Frederick and we were having a cookout. It didn’t look like it was going to rain until the late afternoon when it began pouring down hard. It was really scary hearing how Elicott flooded within a few hours. I’m sorry for anyone who experienced the flooding or lost someone from it.
This happened in my city a decade ago this summer. You don't think a little river that flows through your town can be so destructive. Thankfully in my town they knew the flooding was coming so they cleared all the streets from cars and other possible debris. My dad's office was across the street from the river and the drains in his building were backed up from the water and the windows were all exploded out from the water pressure. Keep your dogs inside the house and away from new people because they can get stressed out and bite people then they might have to be euthanized. Sounds like this city had a flood a few years back and people are willing to rebuild. Great coverage dude.
I live in Catonsville not too far from Ellicott City and cars were getting stuck due to the flooding, very scary!!

So sad...Mother Nature is stronger than most think. Can't believe that it is the second time that a 1-in-1,000-rain event happened there. Pretty scary knowing that the previous event just happened in 2016. Sending hope your way...🙏🏻✌🏻️

As a Floridian, my favorite part of disasters like these are how people come together in the end and help each other. If cities want to solve this problem, they need to devote funds to improving infrastructure!

My heart goes out to these poor people, two big floods in two years? It reminds me of Moore, OK, they get hit by a tornado, rebuild and then get hit again. Major respect for Maryland and always rebuilding the beautiful downtown after something so tragic.

This is the 2nd time this has happened in less than 2 years... honestly they can't even call it a natural disaster because the way they built Ellicott city it's a funnel that ends on mainstreet and will continue to happen.

Also 2ppl died in the 2016 flood, so far no deaths have been reported, one person is missing and they are currently searching for him..
It's also happening because of the community expanding and houses being built surrounding Ellicott city, tearing the trees and soil down that helped prevent this... it's honestly all due to humans, and climate change.
Ellicott City flooding has nothing to do with climate change. This travesty is due to over-development around an area which was a poor choice to begin with. Old Ellicott City is basically the bottom of a canyon that ends at The Patapsco River. Upstream land that was protected wetlands had their zoning changes to R4 or became parking lots. There is nowhere left for the water to be absorbed. Sadly, this will become a problem every 5-10 years from here on out.
One person was helping someone find their lost cat. He was swept away into tje river. They just found his body :(
Oh Dan, it's devastating and heartbreaking. It looks like the aftermath of when Harvey or Ike hit here. The news said no one was hurt. Thank God. But, it really makes you want to cry. Doesn't it? Stay safe and don't fall down a hole or something.
Looking at the water rushing into the city looks more like a Tsunami then a Flood. I am from New Orleans La and I know the power of the water. My prayers are with all in Ellicott City Md.
That's great the water left quickly, recovery can begin immediate. In Houston we had standing water for weeks and the amount of loss was incredible, still recovering in fact.
I'm in tears....thankful for my safety, now Guatemala needs prayers.

Thank you for your very informative video. Hope nobody lost their life during this horrific event, though I did hear one person at least is missing. I'm guessing the merchants were unable to get flood insurance after what happened 2 years ago..so probably lost everything. How extremely awful for the people that live, work, and have businesses in Ellicott City.

Flooding is so destructive and awful. It makes me sad to see these places destroyed by the rushing water. I lived through some serious flooding in TX, so my heart goes out to all those who are affected. I hope they can recover and rebuild.
