  • Review of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5. This is the 2022 Model and the one I'm reviewing comes with an Intel I7-12800H CPU and a RTX 3070TI. Hopefully this helps you out on whether you should pick one up.

This would be a dream laptop with amd cpu + gpu and if the paint would never peel off the chassis. but a $3k business laptop with 5 hours of battery life and the paint peeling off? that's pretty much a travesty. just imagine this thing with a durable metal body and an amd 6800hs + 6700s, having 10 hours of battery life.

I'm slightly mad that it has soldered 8gb ram but it probably accepts a 32gb stick as well in the slot. The only other thing I'm contemplating if the mini led display will ever be available for it- I'm checking it every week for months now and it's still not available for any model.

Even though this only has been my first laptop in my whole life, what struck me the most about it, compare to all other laptop brands and models that i've unbox and setup for our store customer, is how good the damn keyboard is. I feel like i can even compare it to my mechanical keyboard that use MX Speed Silver switch lol.

I think the sweet spot would be an AMD configuration for the Xtreme. You still get plenty of power, AMD is not as power hungry as Intel and won't be running as hot. I would go for the bigger, chunkier one with the Intel config (the other thinkpad, forgot its name atm). Also, I find it sad that I can't have an ethernet port on most of the business laptops these days, making me buy a usb 3.0/3.2 or usb c converter to ethernet. And we've had laptops with 1.7kg's in the past, smaller 14' devices, really thin, that included the ethernet port, so there is no excuse whatsoever.

I had always considered this to be a competitor to the MacBook Pro 16 so it would have been cool to have included it in some of the charts and graphs. I consider gaming laptops to be in a category of their own and not to compete with MacBooks in any way since macOS has such a poor game selection but any work or "professional" laptops I consider to be in the same category. Either way, great review - I've always wanted one of these but the price has always been a bit more than I could stomach for what you get.

I know there's always something better around the corner. It just feels like not the right time to buy a 12th gen intel, 30 series nvidia machine unless there's a pretty darn good discount available. Have a great weekend Matt.

Have you compared this to the Asus Zenbook Pro? How do you think it compares?

    • @iSean1
      @iSean1 ปีที่แล้ว

I have. I had the two machines side by side for a couple of weeks. I really liked the Zenbook Pro 16X overall, but the display I could not live with it. It was super glossy. Literally a black mirror. Any lights behind it were a distraction at best and blinding if it was sunlight. Very annoying and caused a lot of eye strain in my use case.
There is also a visible white mesh that can be seen in areas of the white screen areas. I had read somewhere that it had to do with the touchscreen matrix or something like that. But I am not sure that makes sense.
The display is not as bright as the claimed 550 nits. That peak brightness is only possible in a small window. The sustained brightness of the display is closer to 360 nits. I found for outdoor use or when there was a strong backlight behind it that it really needed to be about 20% or so brighter.
I ended up returning it yesterday and keeping the X1 Extreme Gen 5, despite my preference for the Asus in many ways. The display was just something that I could not live with.
Battery life and performance were otherwise very similar. Ports are also similar, though the Asus only has 1 USB-A.
The keyboard can be hit or miss depending on your preferences. Some like the 7-degree tilt, while others don't. I fell into the liked it category.
The trackpad is also hit-and-miss. Nice large size, good tactile feel, and haptic feedback. But sometimes it seemed to have a mind of its own and did everything except what it was supposed to do. It reminded me a little of training a puppy. If they don't understand the trick that you are trying to teach them, they will do every other trick that they know for the treat, even if none of them are correct :) (that can hopefully be fixed via a later firmware update hopefully?)
The included backpack and pen were nice value-added features of the Asus. But it is disappointing that the memory and SSD are soldered on and non-upgradable. Not an issue if the configurations that they offer do suit your needs, but something worth considering.
Also, the Zenbook Pro 16X is a heavy beast. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme isn't the lightest of laptops, but the ZenBook Pro 16X is a chunk. You could seriously bludgeon someone to death with it.

If Lenovo wouldn't smoke so much crack and price their machines realistically, maybe they'd actually be a viable option but now? Their price/performance is even worse than Apple's during the butterfly keyboard years. I can get a good spec'ed Dell Precision 15 for ~2000, the Lenovo counterpart? 3k+

Sorry but bye to the carbon fiber. I have a Dell XPS 15 since some years ago, and it is awful: it is dirty, sticky and finally it started to peel off, so I decided to try to take the surface off (like a glue) and now it is softer.
In my opinion, the cleanest and most beautiful material is alluminum for the whole chasis, like some brands use it: Apple, Huawei or Microsoft
