I appreciate how, as big a death metal fan as I am, you’ve managed to dig up a number of bands I wasn’t even aware of. You also managed to surprise me with these lists by having bands I would not have expected like Mortification.
Great list good work mate!!! I remember being a 16y old listening to Resurrection " Embalmed Existence" 1993 a pity it didn't make your list, as well as Pungent Stench with "Dirty Rhymes & Psychotronic Beats" it was a an EP but still great fun.... Congrats on your channel it's great.
You do the best ranking videos of Extreme Music on TH-cam and it amazes me that you don't give a f*** about giving unpopular opinions about "sacred topics" in Metal. Overall, it's a solid tier list, except for Stillborn and Screams of Anguish, magnificent classics that deserve better positions on the list.
I appreciate how you take time for some of lesser known albums on these lists. I always find albums that I need to check out! Also, nice to see that you share the same opinions on the three classics, Covenant, Heartwork and Individual Thought Patterns!
Some 1993 death metal albums I’d have liked to see ranked, include: - Burial, Reliquished Souls - Desultory, Into Eternity - Protector, The Heritage - Invocator, Weave The Apocalypse - Resurrection, Embalmed Existence
YO a big one missing. "RESSURECTION : EMBALMED EXSISTENCE!!!" Huge record in 93. I believe Malevolent Creations drummer is on it. Sick Dan Seagrave cover. Check it out!
Carcass's Heartwork and Death's Individual Thought Patterns are S Tier all time. Even though I was only 2 when they were released, they have stood the test of time
I still prefer Scrolls, but PMA is still very, very solid. Too bad everything after that one took a nosedive in quality. The original drummer had a hand in the songwriting and lyrics, and he left right after PMA was released. Feels like two different bands after this album.
Thought you were talking about Macabre - Sinister Slaughter not the band Sinister lol my bad. Sinister Slaughter is Perfection tier for me. The band Sinister is awesome as well though. Cross The Styx is my favorite by them but that's a 1992 album.
Damn I bought so many of these. That Edge of Sanity and Macabre albums were my favorites. The Khaooohs album wasn't as good as the previous album for Pan.Thy.Monium. Really enjoyed the Morbid Angel, Carcass, Unleashed, and Brujeria albums. That Carcass album was the only time I saw them live. I remember being just astonished at the vocals of Demilich when it came out at that time.
While I don't always agree with your opinions (which is fine, we all have them). I have to hand it to you for doing these marathon listens and putting these tier lists together for your videos. They are entertaining to watch. I've become a regular viewer, and they have had a hand in making me revisit extreme metal in general. Personally, like many, judging by the comments. I would have placed Screams of Anguish much higher. Perhaps in Amazing or Fantastic tier. Nespithe would have been right at the top. It's winding, labyrinthine-like riffs, and atmosphere are second to none. They carved their own niche style that influenced countless bands. It stands head and shoulders above its immitators. No question, one of my favourites. Respect for placing Necrophobic in perfection. It deserves it. Keep up the good work 👍
Very very very strong disagree on Screams of Anguish. You say the guitar work is amazing but put it the lowest possible because you don't like the vocals? Out of the 40 it's my favorite from far with Nocturnal Silence and Individual thought patterns. Big props though for including so many albums!
No way is this the first time I've ever agreed with your S tier. The Nocturnal Silence deserves much more recognition. Necrophobic's new album was also really solid.
Impressive ranking from the shear number of albums! A lot on here I've never heard; Illdisposed stood out to my ears as something to investigate further. I enjoy that Hypocrisy album quite a bit, though (it's also their highest rated album on metal archives, not that that means anything).
Craig Locicero from Forbidden was in Death for the European tour for Individual Thought Patterns. There's video of it on TH-cam for anyone interested. Kinda reminds me of when Albert Gonzales from Evildead was in Death when they toured for Spiritual Healing. Also Atheist - Elements rules. Love that album. So many great releases in 93 🤘
This is a year I hold special to me since it was the year I was born and there were lots of great metal albums this year, especially in death metal. I’ve heard great things about Wombbath, Disincarnate, and Eucharist and want to check them out. As for the death metal albums on this list I’ve heard, this would be my ranking: S - Cynic - Focus, Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence, Morbid Angel - Covenant, Carcass - Heartwork, Sentenced - North from Here, Demilich - Nespithe, Atheist - Elements, Death - Individual Thought Patterns A - Brutality - Screams of Anguish, Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity, Cancer - The Sins of Mankind, Edge of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows, Dismember - Indecent & Obscene, At the Gates - With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, Sinister - Diabolical Summoning, Mortification - Post Momentary Affliction, Illdisposed - Four Depressive Seasons, Brujeria - Matando Gueros, Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon, Macabre - Sinister Slaughter, Morgoth - Odium, Unleashed - Across the Open Sea, Pyrexia - Sermon of Mockery, Unanimated - In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead, Morta Skuld - Dying Remains B - Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum, Dark Tranquillity - Skydancer, Malevolent Creation - Stillborn, Pestilence - Spheres C - Suffocation - Breeding the Spawn
Damn, that’s a lot of bands. Respect for that. Individual Though Patterns is tied with Symbolic and Sound of Perseverance for best Death album, but I’ve always though Necrotism and even Torn Arteries are better than Heartwork.
I just happened to be listening to this ranking while gazing longingly out my front window hoping today is the day that the mailman brings my vinyl copy of Erosion of Sanity 🤘
Cool to see some love for Mortification. Post Momentary Affliction has long been my personal favorite, despite its predecessor often being considered their best. And of course, Heartwork has to be in Perfection. One of my favorite albums of all time.
I'd be curious to see your takes on a few albums Disembowelment - Transcendence into the Peripheral (i know death-doom isn't your thing but this is VERY not typical death-doom style) Crematory - Transmigration Cemetary - Godless Beauty Alchemist - Jar of Kingdom (Australian band, debut album. @MetalTrenches a bunch of friends and I went to see them with Napalm Death a few years back and all my friends who speak fluent Spanish gave me this pronunciation. @@MetalTrenches Yeah sure, I didn't said anything about it. I respect your opinion. With Covenant and Individual Thought Patterns we have exactly the same one.
I have a hard time calling anything past Clandestine death metal, but to be fair I have included plenty of other questionable albums on these lists. If it were on here though, it would be Okay/Meh
haha LOVE Macabre. Good old murder metal 😅😅😅😅 Lots of these bands are on the Nuclear Blast compilation album released in the same year. Montreal Massacre was the track featured from Macabre which was of course refering to the mass shooting of females at a University in Montreal in 1989.
Nokturnel - Nothing but Hatred (one of my favorites. Welcome to N.J great family friendly song. They are very fast and its good to follow along to the lyrics because their lyrics are insane) Victims of Internal Decay self titled
Check out the French Canadian Tech Death outfit "Obliveon". Their album Nemesis came out in 93 and it's a masterpiece. Metallum has is at an average of 96%.
I would add katationia dance of December souls easily and my dying bride turn loose the swans also do a 1994 death metal ranking video i think this time recommend you put death metal death metal releases on it like cannibal corpse and six feet under
Screams of Anguish is my second favorite DM album after Covenant. diSEMBOWELMENT is missing unless you consider it doom. 1993 in general was maybe the best year in metal.
Strong agree with basically the entire ranking you were spot on! I'll defend that Eucharist record a bit, it has that Peaceville 3 gloomy mellowness to it more than their Swedish counterparts, they were just at the wrong place at the right time imo.
Sentenced - Shadows of the Past from an earlier year, I believe 1992, rules so hard. Huge Finnish release. The Rotting Ways to Misery demo might be even better. Also Mercyless’ prior rules.
Also, kudos for a lot of offbrand picks and underground picks I have not heard of. Not to just say what you’ve missed IMO, you got a lot of diverse picks. So, thanks Icarus.
All of Macabre's albums are must listens. Especially Sinister Slaughter and Dahmer. Macabre are still active and their latest album Carnival Of Killers came out in 2020. Can't recommend them enough.
@@wheelsofmercury Lol. My bad. Funniest band mixup I've been involved in awhile lol. I read your comment wrong. Thought you were saying god as in "God I really need to listen to this." lol.
To me, Macabre 'Sinister Slaughter' is a true cult classic of an album, and definitely worthy of belonging in the 'Perfection' category. NO ONE sound like Macabre! 🤘🤘 Otherwise I agree with most of your ranking, though I definitely like the two first Hypocrisy albums a whole lot more than you seem to do.. 🤗 ...and that Brutality debut is WAY better than just 'Meh..' in my book..
@@cbn6635 Was watching an interview with Corporate Death from last year and he was saying he'd like to do an Ed Gein or Albert Fish album and he has songs written and ideas for both. I was like "Oh boy that'd be amazing!". Next year it'll be 25 years since Dahmer was released. It's time. 🤘
For histories sake we mustnt forget Swedens Comecon, not to be confused with Comicon. They let go of LG Petrov to be replaced by fresh Asphyx retiree & legend Martin Van Drunen. I'd go with "great" personally. Worth checking out tho.
I’d kinda consider the first two At the Gates albums to be pure death metal, albeit rather different from what was going on in Stockholm. The Red in the Sky is Ours had some great stuff, but the guitar tone was more like a wet pool noodle than a buzzsaw. With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness is very dark, but the sound is better and it’s a cool album that I agree is a step up. To me, they weren’t overtly melodic until Terminal Spirit Disease, although there were some allusions to their future turn in a more melodic direction on their first two albums. To me Carcass’s Heartwork was the first fully realized and classic melodic death metal album, even if it wasn’t technically the first since Skydancer, at least, preceded it. On Suffocation, I don’t know why, but I love the terrible muddy production on Breeding the Spawn juxtaposed against how accomplished the album otherwise is, and I agree on the bass tone. I’m so glad you put Covenant in perfection, because that album is an absolute classic that I think is one of the best death metal albums.
Quest For Metal did a very positive ranking of all of the Pestilence albums a few years back, but referred to one of the albums as "spacey." Patrick responded by getting mad for no reason and reposting the video on their Facebook page making fun of him. Even the Pestilence fans commenting on the post were like "dude... he likes your music... why are you being an ass?"
Focus, Heartwork and Individual all at the right spot - I'm definitely satisfied :). Now I see why at about that time I became fed up with what is now "old skool death metal" sound. Once more, please, Czechia is pronounced "check-ia"
Great effort for putting in this much effort to do these DM lists. But I hve to disagree about Damaged. Aussie legends. Never put out a bad album. They even had Kevin Sharp from Brutal Truth sing for them at one point. Token Remedies Research is arguably their best album though.
Quite a good list, even though I disagree with the positioning of Unleashed (because of its dark and raspy atmosphere that other major Swedish DM bands lack) and Acrostichon (due to well executed doom/speed blend that does not feel off, and Serge Smolders' excellent drumming). I would also put Illdisposed's Four Depressive Seasons lower because it feels quite infantile and lacking of good vocals. Looking forward to 1994, even though it was quite a bland year, with Phlebotomized and Tiamat being the best.
Your sensibilities largely correspond with mine. Only, I've never been a huge fan of Heartwork (nor Slaughter Of The Soul for that matter). Necroticism - that's my Carcass.
Focus, Heartwork and Individual at the right tier - I'm definitely satisfied. Now I see why at about this time I got fed up with what is now "old school death metal". If I can ask a favorite - once again - Czechia is pronounced "check-ia".

@MetalTrenches so true. Genres like Metal, Punk and Hip Hop were allways about rebellion and giving zero fracks 😅😅😅
You made me mad about Brutality being so low but saved it with putting The Nocturnal Silence so high 😅
I swear I wanted to write exactly the same comment. What's the probability of such a thing? Out of 40 albums? I find it almost freaking 😮
I love Brutality. I saw them several times live here in Florida!!!!

Can someone explain the "spacey" meme for pestilence? Is that because Patrick is an absolute unhinged lunatic?
Quest For Metal did a very positive ranking of all of the Pestilence albums a few years back, but referred to one of the albums as "spacey." Patrick responded by getting mad for no reason and reposting the video on their Facebook page making fun of him. Even the Pestilence fans commenting on the post were like "dude... he likes your music... why are you being an ass?"
@@MetalTrenches Sounds like Patrick and Chris Barnes would be best buds lol.
Phantasm "Keeper of Death". Very cool death thrash from Russia!
Just saw Cynic play Focus in full, absolutely mind blown. One fo ybe best albums ever, top 3 for sure
Your sensibilities largely correspond with mine. Only, I've never been a huge fan of Heartwork (nor Slaughter Of The Soul for that matter). Necroticism - that's my Carcass.
Mordicus - Dances From Left. awesome album
right as the Athiest section started, i got an ad for a Christian Music Fest.
Forgot Broken Hope : The Bowels Of Repugnance. And Entombed : Wolverine Blues
We definitely need to have Konkhra with "Sexual Affective Disorder" as well as Necrosanct with Desolate.
hypocrisy,suffocation,dying fetus,internal bleeding,morbid angel,cancer,bolt thrower)
I can't choose between Spheres and Heartwork.
Focus, Heartwork and Individual at the right tier - I'm definitely satisfied. Now I see why at about this time I got fed up with what is now "old school death metal". If I can ask a favorite - once again - Czechia is pronounced "check-ia".
Awesome
We need a Gorguts tier list
