Bhalka Tirtha (Bhalka Pilgrimage) (Hindi: भालका तीर्थ) is located in Veraval, Saurashtra, on the western coast of Gujarat, India. This is the site where Krishna was struck by an arrow shot by a hunter named Jara. Following this event, Krishna worshipped Shiva, an act known in the Puranas as Shri Krishna Nijdham Prasthan Leela (Sanskrit: श्री कृष्ण नीजधाम प्रस्थान लीला).
According to the Mahabharata, the Kurukshetra war resulted in the death of all one hundred sons of Gandhari. On the night before Duryodhana's death, Krishna visited Gandhari to offer his condolences. Gandhari, believing that Krishna had deliberately allowed the war to continue, cursed him in her grief and anger. She declared that Krishna and everyone in the Yadu dynasty would perish after 36 years. Krishna accepted this curse, as he felt that the Yadavas had become arrogant and needed to be humbled.
After 36 years, a violent brawl broke out among the Yadavas during a festival, leading to their mutual destruction. Balarama, Krishna's elder brother, then relinquished his life through Yoga. Krishna retired to the forest and began meditating under a tree. According to the Mahabharata, the hunter Jara mistook Krishna's partially visible left foot for a deer and shot an arrow, fatally wounding him. Realizing his mistake, Jara was consoled by Krishna, who revealed that Jara was the reincarnation of Vali, whom Krishna had killed in his Rama avatar during the Treta Yuga. Krishna then ascended to his eternal abode, Goloka, marking his departure from Earth. This event is believed to have taken place in Bhalka, near the Somnath temple.
Krishna's departure marks the end of the Dvapara Yuga and the beginning of the Kali Yuga, dated to February 17/18, 3102 BCE, according to Puranic sources. In the Ramayana, Rama (Krishna in his earlier avatar) had granted a boon to the monkey king Vali, whom he had killed indirectly. The incident with Jara is seen as the fulfillment of this boon. Krishna is believed to have left his footprints at the site, making it a popular pilgrimage spot for those visiting Somnath.
This ancient temple was previously ransacked by Mahmud of Ghazni, who looted its precious jewels and treasures. The town was razed several times and later reconstructed by the Hindu community. Bhalka Teerth is situated approximately 4 kilometers from the Somnath temple. The government is planning to develop this temple into a major tourist attraction.
Somnath, Veraval City, and Bhalka are well connected by road and rail. The nearest railway station is Veraval, and the nearest airports are in Diu and Rajkot. Bus services are available from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Dwarka.
Bhalka Tirtha, often referred to as the Bhalka pilgrimage, is a famous Hindu worship site located near Veraval on the Arabian Sea's shores. Veraval is a preferred tourist destination for both local and foreign visitors due to its wide range of accommodations. Bhalka Tirth and Somnath Temple are major tourist attractions in Somnath. The temple's inner sanctum houses a blue idol of Lord Krishna in a meditative posture. It is believed to be the spot where the hunter Jara shot Krishna's foot with an arrow. According to legend, the hunter mistook Krishna's foot for a deer's while Krishna was meditating under a pipal tree. Krishna pardoned and blessed the hunter. The site is currently managed by the Central Government of India.
