I'm such a heavy-handed one when drawing so I usually go for the chisel and bullet combos, too ^^'. But then again, I'm nowhere near an expert with markers and such a cheap shit that I usually go for cheaper markers ( and I mean really cheap. I mean I got like 6 Copics which I bought for studying and barely ever use and two boxes of Shinhan Touch Twins, which I got for Christmas and am still too scared to really use, but the bulk of mine are from different stores like Sostrene Grene, Action and Flying Tiger and some Touchnew grey tones.) I know that those aren't as great as the Copics but I still get them to blend somewhat and they do what I usually want them to. Plus I can really work the nibs without being to scared to damage the pens, because I can just replace then without putting a black hole in my pocket :)
@@LunaBianca1805 don't be scared! You deserve to use fun art supplies! I have to kick my own ass to use my good watercolor paper instead of doing everything in my SketchBook.

I dont understand how ppl think copics are easy to control with the brush nibs?? I used both the ohuhu brush an the copic brush nibs an I'd much prefer the ohuhus. Just my personal opinion though.
I love Sally so much, she has such a small curly tail. She seems so cuddly while you film. You could show more of her, playing, petting or cuddling, always love her little intermissions when you are recording or trying to draw something.😻😻 What happend to the fluffy cat you had for tryout? You might have bought a pre Jazza spectrum noir illustrator marker edition. When Jazza reviewed them he noticed the soft nip and the company changed it. So when the Jazza art box came out, the nip according to Jazza was firmer.
If that means the non doesn't split and fray anymore then that's a good thing. I bought some of these a few years at and the brush non did that nasty fraying thing.
I don't think she did. Of course, I am just looking at this video, but I tried some of these markers before the Jazza Art Box and they did not behave like the ones Kat has. The old ones frayed really bad and the ones she has seem to have quite a sturdy brush tip.
Re: the SN being dry, for what the two brands cost, you can afford to buy a set of SNs, top them all off with ink immediately, and *then* start using them, and it'd still cost you less than the Copics. [wry smile]
For anyone looking into buying Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. Some pens do feel drier than others (still in 2021), but it is not every pen. I am not sure why this happens with some of them but with others it's fine, but maybe it got something to do with the flow of the ink? Usually coloring slower solves the drier feel, but ofc the trade off can be that it gets more difficult to blend. With smaller sized pieces you won't notice much of this however. And yes the brush tip is quite soft. So if you got "heavy" hands, these might be very frustrating for you. If you are used to painting with watercolor brushes and mostly enjoy doing smaller pieces, you could very well end up liking these a lot. And for this price? You will be able to get a lot of different colors without going broke. Haha. Something I personally love to do with these markers, is to use them as a base and then go in with coloring pencils on top. Even only a lighter layer with coloring pencils transforms the whole piece. The two mediums almost seem to melt together. So I do think these can be a nice alternative if you like me, can't afford buying a bigger set of Copic's and prefer being able to buy separate colors and/or refill. I have been eyeing Ohuhu markers, but not being able to buy separate colors is making me hesitant. As for the shape of these pens, I too got small hands, but I have a very light grip (get carpal tunnel issues if I grip too hard) so I don't actually notice the somewhat odd shape of them, nor do they feel too big.
i used to pronounce copic “cop-ick” but now i say “co-pick” since almost every youtuber says that as well! also again sorry for comment spam. commenting as i watch the video!
I've always pronounced it as "co-pick" mainly because that was how it was pronounced on their youtube (dunno if it' still up it's been a good....10 years since I saw anything from them)
Thanks for the comparison of those two...I love copics a lot and never took a look at any other options...I guess the spectrum noir are a good option for starters to get a feel for working with a brush nib without having to spend a fortune. Love your videos. Keep it up.
Super helpful video, and I’m glad you did the second piece. I also need to just mention that your attention to detail always impresses me, I loved your comparison chart and the detailing ok the lines made it extra special :)
I wish copics had the bullet nib instead of the chisel. I like them for filling smaller areas because the brush works just find for filling large areas.
yessss kattvalk! so looking forward to seeing what you create! edit: I'm looking for a marker set in grayscale that has a brush tip and blends well, do you (or anybody else) have any suggestions?
Copics are a good choice but obviously expensive. Ohuhu are a great and cheap alternative, but I don't know if they have greyscale sets. Winsor&Newton brush markers are good too and cheaper than copics, and im 100% they have a greyscale set since they have tons of different sets actually. Their nib is really soft though (like the spectrum noir ones but they dont dry out so fast!! I have a couple of them and they work great for sketching as I prefer a stiff brush nib too for illustrations). I havent tried any other marker brand so I cant recommend any further, I hope this helped!
The sets of Ohuhu brush markers do tend to have a decent selection of greys in them, both warm and cool greys in a variety of hues, but I don't think they do a greyscale set. They did just do a skintones set though so perhaps they will do a greyscale one next?
Your art is gorgeous and your review informed - I really enjoyed this video! I noticed that you've started pronouncing "colour" correctly most of the time now! And I know it's hard to change the way you say something - my mum, who is German and speaks English as her second language, still says "gale" when she means "gear", and I speak two languages myself (English and German, obviously). So, I mean it when I say Good Job! Also, I say Copic the same way you do!
I want to try these because Ive always wanted brush and bullet tip like these have. I never really use the chisel because the brush can fill large areas more easily than switching tips and using the chisel. The chisel makes it hard to stay in the lines for me cus of the weird shape.
I haven't see any TH-camr review the Zig Kurecolor Manga Cartoonist Fine & Brush Dual-Tip Markers, I don't know if they are available to you, but I would love to see you review them❤
Girl, I think I love only your art channel, you don't give me art anxiety(I was getting it soo often and still sometimes have) and I feel soo relaxed and inspired after! 💖💖💖
It's very odd that they're drying up randomly like that. I'm wondering if you got a bad batch? I've never had any problems with the other spectrum noir markers.
Heyo!!! 2 year sub here enjoying your art! I love this deer lady oc and i think it would be cool to see her more! Especially if her hair was able to change color? Everytime we see her her she could have different hair so she doesnt get boring to draw! That hair texture looks really fun to draw a gradient of! (Maybe im just bias for gradients lmao i love em) Also! I have a theory on why the spectrum markers are dry out the box! I worked in a popular craft store for 2 whole years and saw those markers sit on the shelves for like a year without being bought! I thiiiink that maybe theyre dry bc 1) they arent that popular and 2) they are considered a handlettering/scrapbooking marker in some stores! So they get to sit longer in the store (in a place you wouldnt think to look for them) than a copic collection lmao. Like certain copic packs would sell out and get refilled on a monthly basis. But the spectrums, only available in packs and classified as a “scrapbook” item sat untouched for literally like a year and a half before we got rid of em. The metallic ones got popular for hand lettering so they never made it into the alcohol marker section with everyone else....now i feel like i missed out lmao
Yes this! The main issue with pens that people don't tend to realise is that they do have a shelf life and so places will keep them on their shelves for ages during which time its possible for the alcohol to evaporate out. So you buy an old pack and all the alcohol is gone and the pigment is left dried inside. Luckily it is possible (probable less so right now with the world situation going on) to "rehydrate" (just with alcohol not water lol) markers like these with rubbing alcohol, basically as close to 100% as its possible to get where one lives. Adding that will let the pigment mix back in and bam, nice juicy marker again. (This was less to you, but more to anyone reading this so they don't throw away markers that could be "rehydrated")
I think it may be an explanation. But still they should have a better shelf life... I have some copics that have been sitting unrefilled for years on my shelf and still have ink in them :/ I just checked I have a 10+ year copic ciao (that allegedly I haven't used a lot compared to other colours) that is still juicy ... Not juicy like a brand new market but still able to color a fairly large area uniformly (albeit he is a bit squeaky should probably buy a refill for it soon). I think all these parameters are why copics markers are so expensive but still hyped ... They are clearly on top on all the others
I didn't think anyone would use Spectrum Noir markers! I've purchased the skin set and I have to agree, it really feels like it's drying out. They don't work well on they're own. BUT when on an art piece with their fellow markers, they are a real treat. And on the note of the bendy brush nib, it's actually my favorite part. It reaches into those really sharp points I draw, and fills larger spaces. Copic, eat your heart out. Here comes Spectrum Noir 😎
Thank you for this video. It was vary helpful. I love the colorful cat! It is so cute! owo The colorful hair on the girl looks like a beautiful bush. : )
(comenting at the begin) Ooo, so excited to see you do this! I find they're most similar to the Winsor & Newton markers in terms of the actual ink, and I know you're particularly familiar with those, so I'm predicting you'll really like them. (Okay, watching now!) Edit to comment at the end: I've only used mine on smaller pieces, so I usually don't encounter that problem with the nib not staying wet, but it's happened a couple times. It also happens with Spectra AD markers on large pieces. I find they do come back to life by the next day, but frustratingly not in time to finish a piece I would otherwise do in one session.
I had the same problem with the flesh tone on the tri blend bullet nibs. It was brand-new when I opened it and when I used it it felt very scratchy and dry
I don't have any Copics, but I got some Illustrator markers from Spectrum Noir. I feel like they just need a specifik kind of paper. In the Hahnemühle Nostalgie sketchbook they work okay, but I'm still a sucker for my Procolor markers from Winsor and Newton.
I have the same problem with a "dry" Illustrator Marker. The thing is, the marker isn't dry, because the other nib is totally fine, so I guess I just need to change the brush nib?
I wonder if you could replace illustrator marker nibs with copic ones? I would also consider contacting the company or wherever you bought the markers and asking for either replacement markers or refill ink..... :-). Or you know just refilling them with copic ink refills you might already have?? Then you’d have some hybrid markers. Interesting that their ink life seems so short though. I got three as part of a package deal and haven’t tested them out yet much because. Well. Black, red and blue don’t offer much color wise by themselves. Thanks for the video!
I've been so tempted to get a new set of markers ever since my old Trias dried up and I ran out of refills (the name alone is enough to show how old these were!), but the price of Copics is so prohibitive ... this is reassuring that there might be a good alternative though! I wonder how they compare with the Ohuhu ones? The artwork you have created is beautiful, I really love the vibrancy and that skin is 💖
I'm from Germany and always pronounced it cop-ick. I got my first set of copics because the creator of Naruto Mangas recommend it. At that time there wasn't really another Option and there was not much information on the internet. As the years went by I was to busy to draw with them. Recently I tried them again, 12 years after buying and they still work perfect! Not dryed out or anything. I would always prefer copics because of quality.
Very, very, very useful you comparing test between these two trade marks of markers. Your explanation is really helpful to make us decide which markers is better to buy depending on our needs. I agree with you about this uncomfortable hexagonal shape and the other characteristics of these markers "outfit", I mean how they look, not very helpful design. But, to begin, I think I'd try them. Oh! Your pronunciation of COPIC is perfect when you say something like /kə'pik/ or something like /kəupik/ (sorry, I haven't got more suitable phonological signs!!).
I have the old (black barrel) classique Spectrum noir markers. But the old version. It was an equal sided hexagon. Now they are the hexagon as the illustrator. I am slowly buying the illustrator colours because I love the brush nibs. Personally I prefer a softer nib. But also can't figure out why your markers are getting dry. The thick barrel is a must for me. I can't hold smaller/thinner markers as my hands don't work properly. So therefor I cannot afford the more expensive markers. I have less control of my hands and cannot be precise anymore. So buying something expensive is a bit stupid for me personally. For a beginner it is a nice thing to start with. Since you can buy them seperate, might be worth it to buy one colour you love to use and test out the marker to see if it fits your needs.
I started with spectrum noir first gen markers as they were releasing their second gen markers (they had changed the shape from square to hexagon) but when i bought refills for them it was a super bad experience... they came in eye dropper bottles which one was completely broken from age another had a small hole in it after two uses and within three years all the ink had dried out. So i had went to copics soon after that and havent looked back honestly i have some of the spectrum noir illustratiors (from the jazzas jazzy art box last year) they are ok but to me dont compare to copics and i will spend the money on the copics and their refills have not had like any trouble with any of them!
Could you possible use the copic brush nib on the spectrum marker? Like using a new blank copic brush nib and replacing the spectrum brush nib with it?
My dear Marie loved your video once again! You are the best! Just wanted to ask you, did you use an inkjet printer to print your sketch? And which paper ? 🙈♥️
HEY! I have a tips! If the markers feel dry, make sure to purchase refills! If they run low, then you refill them. Or you can even refill the brand new ones so they feel more ✨juicy✨! Then they won’t feel dry at all! Also, they have updated the nibs by now, so maybe they don’t have the same issue anymore :P
Spectrum noir is supposed to be coming out with nibs that mimick the Japanese style nibs?! Not sure of all the info, but that may help to sway your opinion! Might be worth looking into! Love ya!!
This was very helpful to me, thank you! I currently own oh who who markers, but they are a completely new medium to me. Is there a specific kind of paper you would recommend for markers and that’s also good with colored pencil? Thank you so much, you are so talented and I enjoy your videos so much! ❤️❤️❤️
The only thing I used them for is for highlighting with highlighters (or the Zebra mildliners which are so pretty) for things like bullet journaling. Not that I really do that much. I don't feel like I have much control with a chisel tip so have never wanted to use them for anything else than that. Just go over a few words, nothing more.
Have you ever tried the brush versions of the promarkers (brushmarkers)? I think those nibs are also very soft so I prefer the normal Promarkers. I really enjoy these marker (and other art supplies) testing videos you make :) ps. your cat is awesome xd
I bought over 100 Spectrum Noir markers and found about a third of them felt dry and scratchy. It was very disappointing. But I have since discovered it is the nib, not the ink, which is dry. If you soak the pen in just enough acetone to cover the nib for 5 minutes, replace the cap and leave it to rest overnight, the pens work beautifully again.
Ohhh!😱 This is so sad that inks inside NEW marker was deied out or something like that.. I really herd a lot about these markers and wanted to try them out too so badly but now I better don't 😨😨😨 Thank you for sharing this review 🤗💜💜💜
Maby she got a bad batch? Maby theyll upgrade them in the future after feedback. Theres allot of other brands out there go check out jazzas new video he made one yesterday with like every brand. Maby youll find something.
Oh really? Too bad you don’t like them. I have some no name markers and I put copic nibs into them, seems to work, but then again, those nibs are pretty expensive 😄
For the price they're good markers nice brushtip, but they're often lie on shelves for months and are more dry because off that. And I'm finding them at bit to clunky to work with for my small hands.
really never got the copic hype, when you watch comparison videos, they are always slightly ahead, but always slightly, so to pay 5-7 dollars more for the copic to get a slightly better pen ? Even the really cheap ones are not a lot worse than the copic... So can anyone explain to me why i have to pay almost 7-9 Dollars for a marker ? Wheres the big difference ?
Spectrum Noir are notorious for being dry when they are new. I think that they dont fill them all the way up. I have the whole set of the classics and when i bought them several were dry and basically dead right out of the pack. I used to love the spectrum markers but then I tried a copic and it is hard for me to use them now.
Why is everyone ive seen testing the spectrums so heavy handed? I have a full set & have never run into this issue, its like thwyre purposely Tring to damage the tip, you really don't need that much pressure with any marker.
Spectrum noir do seem to run out/dry up quick. I purchased some of their new colours (a few years ago), and whilst they're colours I trended to reach for more often, the images I colour are only small stamped images, nowhere near the large picture you did.. I'd imagine one picture like that would for sure dry them out. Disappointing that the refills are £6 each and I already have 5 dried up ones.. Its expensive imo. Ty for your review x.
I love the chisel tip on the Copic, less damage to the brush tip when filling up a large space!!

Another great review of copic alternative markers.
Have you already tried the promarker brush markers from Winsor & Newton ?
Watching your video around a year... Now I feel more confident in colour shading... Both look good. But my favorite is copic
I have all the original Soectrum markers. I'll have to give these ones a try :) I'm trying to learn to use markers lol I have so many.
I spend to much money on copic markers when I shouldn't :(
I've been so tempted to get a new set of markers ever since my old Trias dried up and I ran out of refills (the name alone is enough to show how old these were!), but the price of Copics is so prohibitive ... this is reassuring that there might be a good alternative though!
Something about the Spectrum Noir colours look like they’re muddy, if that makes sense? Not very clear colours it seems. At least that’s my impression
I'm wondering if maybe you just got a bad batch of markers? Despite the dryness, I think your art turned out very well.
I love the spectrum noir markers. I have their pink marker set. I bought that set cuz i needed a variety of pinks as i use pink the most
But the shape of the marker is hard to hold
The one on the left is more vivid ☺️
İ love you..i love your unboxing tooooo...
So i had went to copics soon after that and havent looked back honestly i have some of the spectrum noir illustratiors (from the jazzas jazzy art box last year) they are ok but to me dont compare to copics and i will spend the money on the copics and their refills have not had like any trouble with any of them!
lol finally finished here’s my last comment to say i loved the video!
To fix the nib problem with spectrum, isnt it possible to use a copic nib instrad? Replace the orig spectrum with a copic if it fits in the barrel?
Even with the new nibs I HATE their markers, I do like their watercolor pencils though.
Could you please try out the Altenew alcohol markers?
that doggo is soooo adorable. will it be merch, too? or maybe a template? love your art 💫💚
Could you possible use the copic brush nib on the spectrum marker? Like using a new blank copic brush nib and replacing the spectrum brush nib with it?
Do you know where you can buy single spectrum markers? I have only found one place that has a big shipping and handling fee.
You should do a review of Caliart brush markers.I did them on my channel and I love them 😍 it’s just a suggestion though
Thanks for the great art, great view, and great Sally butt!
My dear Marie loved your video once again! You are the best! Just wanted to ask you, did you use an inkjet printer to print your sketch? And which paper ? 🙈♥️
Thank you 😊 yes it’s an inkjet, and I print on smooth Bristol board (with the printer settings “Photo on regular paper”)
Love ya!!
Which markers are they, the ones with transparent tip barel?
Could the Forest spirit lady be a coloring page? I love it so much!
You should create a coloring book.
This was very helpful to me, thank you! I currently own oh who who markers, but they are a completely new medium to me. Is there a specific kind of paper you would recommend for markers and that’s also good with colored pencil? Thank you so much, you are so talented and I enjoy your videos so much! ❤️❤️❤️
I never ever use chisel and never will. I love the brush and bullet combo
What about the fact that copic leaves little White dots in the ink on the paper? Does the spectrum noir do the same?
It's not the markers, more likely the paper she used.
more comments i hope youtube algorithm likes me- but the return of the deer lady is so nice i really like her.
Great video,thank you!!
Have you ever tried the brush versions of the promarkers (brushmarkers)? I think those nibs are also very soft so I prefer the normal Promarkers. I really enjoy these marker (and other art supplies) testing videos you make :) ps. your cat is awesome xd
Those where her first makers before she went to copic. There is a video about that.
TH-cam didn’t notify me ;-; I love your work though!! Your videos and art are so nice
Do you think the copic replacement nibs would fit in the spectrum marker ? Just curious
Ohhh!😱 This is so sad that inks inside NEW marker was deied out or something like that.. I really herd a lot about these markers and wanted to try them out too so badly but now I better don't 😨😨😨
Thank you for sharing this review 🤗💜💜💜
Maby she got a bad batch? Maby theyll upgrade them in the future after feedback. Theres allot of other brands out there go check out jazzas new video he made one yesterday with like every brand. Maby youll find something.
What if you tried to do an art piece with color eye shadow or makeup?
I think you got an old set, since they were dry and seem to have the „old“ nibs. They worked together with jazzy and changed it.
They are brand new with the new nib. I’ve tried the old one and it’s not the same
I wouldve wanted a large pic woth copics to compare with the one you did with spectrum.
really never got the copic hype, when you watch comparison videos, they are always slightly ahead, but always slightly, so to pay 5-7 dollars more for the copic to get a slightly better pen ? Even the really cheap ones are not a lot worse than the copic...
So can anyone explain to me why i have to pay almost 7-9 Dollars for a marker ? Wheres the big difference ?
Spectrum Noir are notorious for being dry when they are new. I think that they dont fill them all the way up. I have the whole set of the classics and when i bought them several were dry and basically dead right out of the pack. I used to love the spectrum markers but then I tried a copic and it is hard for me to use them now.
hello, I just bought a set of these and I was wondering if this feeling of dryness fades after using them several times?
Great video!👍
How much ink these markers have?
They seem to dry up a lot faster.
I have heard so many mixed reviews about these markers. All mention the bendy brush tip, so unless I get these for free I'm not trying them 🙂
I love these!!!
Why is everyone ive seen testing the spectrums so heavy handed? I have a full set & have never run into this issue, its like thwyre purposely Tring to damage the tip, you really don't need that much pressure with any marker.
I wish I had Arteza colored pencils for Christmas! 😭😭🙁
6:45 OMG I DIDN'T KNOW THAT?!
I wish I understood markers. It’s the one medium that eludes me lol
Me too😔
An Egg people can make pieces that look like digital prints and I can only make a kindergartner trial haha
Ohuhu markers have a brush tip plz review ☺️
That's so strange, My Tints set of markers has the color Vanilla (BO1) instead of Suntan. I guess they changed it, but I wonder when.
Ohuhus are becoming available per color, at least it’s on their website.
I have the same issues with this makers. It is so disappointing the nibs dry out from the first coloring!
