Let's Talk Janome vs Juki HD Machines - With Kelley Rao

- I use true industrial sewing machines for my every day bag making efforts. But when I go to retreats, we are limited by the machine we can bring or what the retreat offers. I own two Juki 2010Q's and let me say, they are solid heavy duty machines. But as bag makers, we really push our machines, especially when it comes to thick layers and different heights (such as when sewing on connectors). At a recent retreat I was introduced to the Janome HD9 and it really did seem to outshine the Juki 2010Q when it came to thick layers (such as top stitching) or 4-fold straps.
So, while I love my Juki's, I have to say I was pretty impressed with my new HD9 and happy to add her, Jane, to the family!
I'm not affiliated with Juki or Janome; these are just my opinions.

Hi Kelley, Thankyou so much for your response to my comment re the two machines. I can only speak as I find and maybe - like autos- identical machines tho made in the same factory and on the same day do not always perform the same. My janome sits on a table - unused. Frankly a waste of money and when I contacted my dealer after having the machine for two weeks - to use as it as trade in . .I was shocked by how little he offered me for it. Juki and Bernina were easier to sell he said. Altho my Janome looks more elegant and has more bells and whistles it does not compare with the juki IMHO as far as performance is concerned and I cannot pretend otherwise. Sorry if this hurts some feelings but that how it is - for me.

@@sewkelley I know Kelley. . I thought so too. Really shocked me. But I did make enquiries with other dealers and received similar response.Was offered £400 (UK) as top offer. As a trade in. Not cash. Must admit the Janome is a beautiful looking machine which is what attracted me in the first place but it just doesn't do what the Juki does for me. Or my 30 year old Bernina 1230. Sorry to disappoint prospective Janome buyers with my comments but I must speak as I find.
barbara mcInnis I'm a quilter but would like to upgrade my machine (I have a Brother I bought at Walmart many years ago). Would you recommend Bernina or Juki to be able to do everything in quilting like piecing, free-motion quilting, etc? I really want a workhorse, something that's reliable, and doesn't have to be computerized or a ton of stitches. I may be asking for a lot though.
Do you still not like your HD9? What didn’t you like? Looking for a new machine and it’s top of my list but only by watching videos as I haven’t been able to test any.

So lad to see this. I just bought the Janome HD9 on the recommendation of a sales associate at my local dealer as I know VERY little about sewing machines. I bought it because i collect antique firearms and the leather holsters are typically impossible to find so I wanted to make my own reproductions. Seeing the HD9 handle leather brings a bit of relief to me.
Are you still loving your HD9?
@@sewkelley Yes! I have been surprised with what all it will power through. Not long ago I used it to sew a holster out of some pretty thick veg tan leather!

Would have liked to see a free motion comparison. I have a Janome 1600P (very similar to the HD) and it free motions nicer even than my long arm. And the space underneath the machine where the lighting is located is actually called the Harp.
I have been trying to decide between the Janome HD9 and the Juki TL-18 QVP and because of the Juki being $1000 cheaper (in Canada), I have ordered the Juki and I'm excitedly waiting for it to arrive in a week!

I normally use a Juki 8700 and Juki 1541.
Hi Kelley, I am curious how the Juki did on 2 layers of leather. Thank you. I am contemplating purchasing the Juki. I currently use a Pfaff 7550 with dual feed but the machine is struggling and many dealers will no longer fix them.
I'd equate the Juki 2010Q to a low powered Juki 8700. Neither are really meant to sew leather. The HD9 would be more suitable, given it can handle thicker threads.

They are very similar. But I do like that the HD can take heavier thread than my Juki2010Q. I use soft polyester thread (Selric) on it and it sews beautifully.
This is fantastic. I wondered how much these machines could take. That way you have an idea how hard your project is on it...and how long it may last. Seems the HD9 has more power but also far more expensive....in Canada anyway.
Because of the $1000 price difference between the two in Canada, I just ordered the Juki TL-18 QVP and I'm excitedly waiting for its arrival.

You'll find most high shank feet for a single needle machine will work just fine. I like Cutex Sewing Supplies feet and Sewing Machine Plus.

I would not. But I think I answered you in my group, in that if you have space for a real industrial, buy that instead (it's less money, too)
I’m not happy with my Juki 2010 after owning HD Janomes. Selling it and getting the HD9, my original choice!

Kelley Rao Yes I did! Absolutely love it! But yes crazy they didn’t make it like the Janome 6700P (my other incredible lovely machine) that has the second level of super height and stays up there without holding it. But yes, HD9 kicks absolute botbot! Now to get the extra feet I need $$$$$$ 😅

Not big enough! That's the only thing I don't like about it. I'd say maybe 3/4"? I am going to see if my machine tech can adjust to make it higher,

If you have the space, hands down 8700 is the best.
is janome HD9 is almost as good as an industrial machine? it will getting tired when you use it too often or too long? thank you.. because I want to buy one for making a dog accessories
It's a solid machine. Can't really compare to a Industrial since the motors are different -- everything! I think it will be just fine for dog accessories.

I have the H do you nine and Lovett have not use the thicker thread would like to try it do I need to change the tension
I don't recall changing the tension, but you do thread it differently than regular thread (guide and instruction book is very helpful)
I have a Singer Patchwork and am looking for a machine to do complete quilting - up to a king size. Which do you think would be a better choice? I honestly don't plan to do more than bags and quilting, but one never knows!
Tamara Graham I dont quilt on these machines myself. I know the 2010q has an add on specifically for quilting.

I like this machine, thanks for your review! I sew clothes (from silk clothes to wool coats) and do not need quilting but I like the idea of this machine. I just love straight stitch. Would you say it's worth?
I think you'd do fine with the 2010Q for what you wish to sew. Anything more heavy duty and consider the HD9.

Thank you very much for such a helpful video. It was very useful to see as I am hesitating between two of these models. Could this be possible to see the maximum stitch length for the Janome machine - is it 5mm or 6mm? And if possible - are Juki presser foot (say straight stitch regular one) compatible with the Janome machine? Thanks
The machines are in storage at the moment, but as I recall, they had similar SL. The presser feet are standard for either machine. If your budget permits, I’d go HD9.

Yes, I believe it was a #69 bonded nyon.
I like my HD9 however my bobbin case does not seem to work every time I load it !!! its very frustrating not sure what I am doing wrong 😖.. I make leather bags and having to load the bobbin case as instructed in the Manuel does not seem to work for me... not sure what I am doing wrong?? its not rocket science😖for the money you pay it should be slightly easier😖..I am about to give up!!😒
Don’t give up! You should insert, twist a little and feel a pop. Then you know it is in correctly.
Hi, beautiful machines, but how much do they actually weight each?
I think the 2010Q weighs about 40 lbs and the other possibly 50. Not really something you can stick in an overhead bin.
As of December 2021, the HD9 is 32lbs.

Thank You very much for this video. It's very very helpful for my choice. But may I ask You about the noise- Janome HD9 is noisier than Juki 2010, did I understand rightly? I have Janome 423S and it's very noisy.
Its been a long time since I’ve seen my vid. As I recall, they were equally noisy. The noise itself woukd not be a deterning factor for me.

You can get a table top tripod for your camera it was very difficult to see what you were doing and I’m sure it was difficult for you to have to hold the camera
No contest. I have both machines. Juki outstanding for fmq. Janome not a patch on it. Juki came with a walking foot plus other feet. The demonstrator is downplaying the Juki for reasons best known to herself. Foot cutter on Juki is great. Can use the one on the machine if one prefers. Stitch quality also better on Juki and it’s fast fast fast when you need it.
Not really down playing, just providing information so people can decide for themselves. I have two 2010Qs and the HD9. They are comparable.
Yes. It's much cheaper, comes with more accessories, an extension table, it's more quiet, has a higher foot lift, better cutter and the newer juki TL-18qvp (which competes with janome more directly when it comes to age and prize) also has a microlifter. The only thing I see right away that is better on Janome is the light. But for the added prize on the janome you could buy a separate light for the juki. Thicker thread might be an other win for janome, but I haven't got enough information on that point myself.

One question I haven't found much information on is if the Juki takes heavier weight threads ? I see the Janome has a special way to thread thicker threads and wondering if the Juki works on thicker threads as well. Many thanks and happiest new year !
Looks like I found my answer looking at some responses you gave in previous comments ! I was hoping for a Juki but looks like it'll be a Janome. Again, a million thank yous for this video.
I can't make my mind up as to which one of these to get. I mostly sew pouches and stuff sacks out of technical waterproof fabric (X-Pac, DCF). Funnily enough the hf9 is about $400 cheaper than the Juki here in Australia.
I'd get the HD9 as it can use heavier weight thread.
I only use one type of thread. Guterman Mara 70. Do you think the hd9 will be any better than the Juki?
I use heavier thread in my Juki. I can actually use #10 crochet thread in mine. (adjust tensions, #18 needle) I didn't know I wasn't supposed to use the thread cutter on it. Oops! Seemed to handle it well though. My Juki does everything if you have the correct needle for the job. I use only Microtex needles. I also have a Janome 1600P. It will skip stitches on thicker fabrics. I would not give up my Juki for anything but I do love my Janomes too.

Hi, could I ask you what is the distance from the working platform to the head of the machines? In this video it looks like Janome has a bigger distance. I find that the head in my old Janome is very low and makes it harder to sew bags. I can’t decide which machine to buy...pity that Janome has no extension table as it more expensive in Sweden :-(
The machines are stored away at the moment, but I do believe the HD9 had a bigger throat. I can fit my table from by 2010 on it! I have seen tables for the HD9 for sale, but yes, expensive.

Yes, in this demo both machines had Selric #69 (non bonded).
Juki needs a more powerful motor

First. The Janome is faster ,,speed. Large bobbin,,means more thread. The Janome pressure foot lifts higher than the JUKI. Better lighting,,,use this trick when sewing Vinyl and Leather. ,,rub a little sewing machine oil on them and the machine will sew easier,,,any machine.

She does OK. I think if anyone is truly looking for a sturdy machine, they should save their money and get an industrial. The difference is night and day!
Recording videos is definitely difficult but you do have a habit of smacking your lips which is a little bit offputting
