This was probably the most excited I've been to transcribe something! Gorgeous improvisation by Louis van Dijk, off of Michel Legrand's composition. Louis was a master in jazz improvisation founded on classical harmony.
Today's sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF): spot the equivalent of a b13 #5 chord.

while not marked, you could argue that the + of 3 in m.169 is a rootless voicing of CM7(#5#11b13#15)

@@jazzjens I actually said the prompt wrong, I meant b13 with a 9, but since you got the wrong question right, shoot me a message! via gondolamusic.com/contact

If theyweren’t what’s the point - they’re not the best music. It’s for effect, and 60% is a single is one descending lick pattern. The execution is what makes it excellent: the precision and fortitude is what makes it effectful

The ritardando at the very end, perfect ending, it almost felt like an extended 'amen'.
Anyway, this must have been a lot of work, the man played about a million notes.

Thank you Timothy I think you have just taught me why I like your approach and way of doing things so much! It's all those beautiful classical harmonies and embrace of beauty that shines through your work. Who are your professional peers Timothy as I'd love to be able to compare and contrast your work with those doing similar things? Your refined talent is SO rare!

Thanks Timothy ! Louis was a master. I also love his duets he did in the 80's together with classical pianist Daniel Wayenberg there is a live recording of them in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The Beatles Medley they play is wonderful especially the first passage .... here it is: th-cam.com/video/FwIsf9gpy5c/w-d-xo.html

That's really awesome, especially loved the 2nd half of it.
Check Riyoko Takagi's live improvisation on a famous prelude "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" by Claude Debussy: th-cam.com/video/urxeXtOVW3Mn/w-d-xo.html (especially the 2nd half)
Now, you've transcribed Riyoko Takagi's home improvisation on "Smooth Operator" by Sade last year. Actually, that's how I probably discovered her (traffic to her channel made one of her popular racy videos trend and got recommended, then when I was exploring and researching her music, I found your transcription video that probably caused it).
What I discovered is that Riyoko is a tremendous live artist but the problem with Japan is because of their copyright laws, it's very hard to peek inside their live music scene without physically being there. I've spent most of 2023 researching Riyoko, streaming and recording everything that was possible to access remotely (which is ~5% of her overall live activity, jumping through lots of hoops in the process as 1 of the only 2 venues in her live circuit that offer remote access, accept only Japanese 💴 methods), documenting and cataloging her performances. My motivation behind my effort was that it was too easy for people to gloss over her channel and discount her as a musician. I suspected that she's a really amazing artist and I wanted to unearth and dig up enough evidence that would beyond a shadow of a doubt show who she really was as an artist. It took many months and hundreds of hours but over 100 live perfornances (pieces) later and hundreds of highlight short clips, I now have her body of work in a live environment well documented across 2 channels (this one and @Riyo-Live).

Goodness me - what a collection you've put together. It will take some time to work through it all! She's quite something and I look forward to hearing more! Many thanks from Sydney - Dave

    • @LogioTek

@@deldridg Haha, I'm not a musician but I've researched and followed a couple musical geniuses in the past, so I definitely know when I see one. I actually got triggered by some comments I've read about Riyoko on Timothy's transcription of her "Smooth Operator" improvisation and some of her own videos, particularly one comment said "she's a bottom feeder with one lucky masterpiece - Smooth Operator". So I said, okay I'll just dig up everything that's possible and show everyone who she really is. Then, shortly after I started my research, I also found out that she's basically 39 years old. So I turned it into a more serious project because now I was also capturing an artist in their precious prime years. Now I seeded TH-cam with over 300 searchable highlight clips of Riyoko and over 100 full live performances, that are harder to find but all short clips give the leads and links to full performances.
It took a bit of testing out the heat from Japanese venues and law abiding Japanese citizens and decided to split the risk into two channels by Autumn 2023. I've come across some 2022 videos posted by some Japanese folks that were asked to take them down and they were taken down within a week. I decided not to use Riyoko's name in Japanese characters to reduce heat at the expense of much less traffic and therefore less boost for the algorithm. Actually when I was weighing risks and how to go about it around July 2023, I had my Japanese friend pass me a video they personally recorded at a festival and I was asked to take it down a week after I posted it. That was when I decided not to use her Japanese name anymore. This channel I'm writing from, where I started posting stuff that's searchable by Riyoko's Romaji name, mostly short clips and compilations I made, 95% of it plugs into youtube.com/@Riyo-Live channel via playlists on the bottom of that channel home so that channel is more complete if playlists are included. Just want you to be aware of decisions made and why.
Oh and check what kind of random audience-induced improvisations she does live on a regular basis. While others like to prepare and polish their performances to make themselves look better while staying in their comfort zones, Riyoko is the complete opposite. Not only she never plays anything the same way twice, she also loves the thrill of the highest forms of musical spontaneity induced by none other than her audiences th-cam.com/video/FBloLAOGVUk/w-d-xo.html like this. From my research, there isn't anyone else in Japan who performs these feats live and raw like Riyoko. She's been doing stuff like this for at least a decade as I found 3rd person blogging records recounting her doing it dating back to 2015, even making up music on the spot from random passing emergency vehicle siren Doppler effect. And personally for me, I would say that I really enjoy about 75% of her impromptu improvisations, which is a very high stat. And she can make it as beautiful or as intense as possible, conjure and change the moods gradually or suddenly on a dime as she would transition from a mellow piece to a more intense piece with her improvisations. I've seen her surprise and make the heads turn of very respected senior musicians she played with, one of them has been playing with her for about a year and she still gets live reactions of surprise out of him.
Anyway, as I mentioned, I got whole categorized playlists of samples, including originals, interpretations, technical prowess, improvisations (2 playlists: by musicality and by intensity), ad-lib solos, and I still add samples very often to these playlists. I have so much evidence, I can destroy almost any argument brought against Riyoko. If Riyoko Takagi is a "bottom feeder" then 98% of musicians should just simply quit and stop embarrassing themselves. At least Riyoko has an excuse of being preoccupied with pop music, modeling, starring in reality TV and J-drama series, and other even weirder non-musical works in the past decade, what's their excuse?

That was a gorgeous version. I recommend searching for Gabriela Montero's improvs. She's a good classical pianist who finishes her concerts by asking the audience to suggest a tune every knows. She then goes to the piano, plays the melody with one finger at first, and within about 30 seconds she's transformed it into a classical piece, maybe intermixed with a samba.Just one of many examples: th-cam.com/video/SmO8UDmZdOI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=og5cHApr4nC5WyyB&t=447
