If I am not mistaking, Herr von Karajan took his time to edit the recordings himself, he loved it. Not only was he an outstanding conductor but also was film director for many of his recorded concerts. Even demanded to do reshoots if he considered that the expressions on the musicians faces was “too vulgar” for his taste. He truly was a complex wonderful man.

If Karajan was German chancellor at the moment, he would have completed building the BER airport in Berlin within a week.

Conducting with closed eyes, the trademark of Karajan, and yet every cue was, as if he was looking directly at you, the mark of a genius.
More people should listen to classical music, they don't know what they miss... I really like this symphony

He was famous for conducting without a music score to look at, and with his eyes closed to hear everything without distraction.

One of the greatest conductor gods par excellence. His interpretation of both the Beethoven and Bruckner symphonies is unprecedented. His tenacity and focus were only outdone by his arrogance.

I can't describe a word about the perfectness of the quality of this music and the satisfaction given me.
What makes this symphony so good is it is resemblance to the human soul. Up and downs without any balance.

Peter Müller I love the old guys, but lately I've been thinking I should give the young guns a listen. Accordingly, I've purchased CDs by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Daniil Trifonov, Francois-Xavier Roth, and John Nelson. I love them! The recordings and performances are great, and every bit as good as anything I've ever heard. But I haven't give up on the masters. I've recently acquired two recordings of Karajan live in the 60s that I love too. It's impossible to say who's the best old or new.

They play this with the subtlety and passion of a quartet, but with the scale and drama of the symphony orchestra that they are. Imagine listening to this music in '72, as a West German in that hall. Monstrous what extreme nationalism inflicted on this music. Beethoven's music is to and for all!

when Herbert von karajan one alive the Berlin Philharmonic was the greatest Orchestra in the world. After he died they went downhill.

Because it is simply the most concentrated and powerfully self contained statement in all music. In itself the four note pattern is a seemingly uninteresting way to start a symphony, yet Beethoven is able to construct not just the the first movement out of it but the entire symphony. The four note pattern is punctuated by short pauses racking up the tension which compels you to follow its course.
The entire four movements is a musical journey (cliche, I know) from 1) Tragedy to Triumph; 2) Despair to Hope; 3) Darkness to Light. Inspite the personal tragedy of deafness, Beethoven is saying life is good. He was optimistic. These are the unque unquensionable legacies that he has left us.
