      I third this - my engine started showing signs of bad mounts & my first thought was - "Either ShopLife or 50sKid has a DIY on this" and surely enough I searched it up and 50s kid was first in line. His video are fool proof with clear and precise explanations and demonstrations- for that he will always be my go to DIY'er 🍻🍻

    Great video 50sKid! Lots of tips. I just did this on my '05 ZHP automatic. Just a tip, I did NOT remove the engine fan..I just removed the (2) retainers for the shroud (1 screw & 1 plastic rivet) & let the fan lift up the shroud when lifting the engine. easy peezee. Another tip on the transmission mounts, you can use a 1/2" ratchet in the 13mm open end wrench to loosen & tighten the nuts instead of trying to balance the 2nd wrench. Sometimes the wrench will slip off of the other wrench. These are just added tips & not at all saying your way is not great. I love your videos, especially on the E46. Please keep posting. Greetings from that Old Jarhead in WNC

    Jason - look good with the weight off! keep it up!
    I just did the transmission mounts last weekend. The top nuts are kind of a bear with lack of clearance. I have some stubby wrenches which had sufficient clearance and luckily because of your previous video I happened to know that a 3/8 extension fits in the 13mm wrench to provide more leverage. Once again thanks!!
    Edit: The GM trans has a bit less clearance with the heat shield than the ZF that's pictured here.

    • @hindflight
      @hindflight ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikechudzik1325 I feel your pain Mike!! Get a stubby 13mm wrench with the boxed end on the nut. Then insert the extension in the open end. A stubby one will just clear it but you won't have the leverage as I described earlier unless you use the extension. You'll be turning in reverse of course since it's facing away from you... dont forget that!! ;) Good luck!!

    Hi. I just recently discovered your channel and purchased a 2002 c330i convertible with only 66k miles with one owner, that basically have the car garage and drove it very little. I am not the handy type; however, I have been watching all your old videos and they are incredibly detail and informative. Although the car looks exceptionally maintain, from watching your videos, I am getting ready for what is to come as far as preventative maintenance and looking for a great mechanic here in El Paso where I lived. Will keep watching and enjoying all your videos. Thanks!

      I have 325ci 04 wife original first owner and we are at 190k 🎉. I just replaced intake boots & ignitions coils last year, DISA & MAS sensors. My next tasks are Engine Mounts, CCV/PCV, Flash DME, since I’m getting lean codes.
      I think as long as you always check your oil level, check for leaks and check coolant level/leaking cap or hose. Your car should run for while! Maintenances are key since everything is plastic.
      Even headlights wiring used will deteriorate (biodegradable) I was told. So when that happens, you need solder new wires or buy new headlight.

    The best thing about installing the M3 motor and trans mounts is the improved shift accuracy and feel in the shifter.
    The mounts also last much longer. But they do transmit more vibration.

    Nice to see the e46 getting some love
    Last time I did engine mounts I used the ECS 75A Durometer ones on my e36. Was doing a manual conversion at the time, plus droppign the cross menber to change the pan gasket and rear main seal, and did something really dumb!
    I'd used a one of hose HF engine supports to bring the front of the engine up off the mounts, had the trani off so no support at the back! Engine was jambed against the firewall so I though yep I'll be good. Next thing I know the back of the engine is trying to drop though the floor and also front pivoting to put the crank pully though the new misimoto rad that I'd installed - Mad dash with the engine hoist to support the back. All OK in the end!
    Should have thought that one through better!

    For the right side engine mount, I also remove the bracket from the engine. loosely screwed the engine mount to the chassis and the bracket first. Then fiddled with bracket to engine end to line up the four holes. Then tighten everything. This way, I didn't have to fight with lining up the mount to chassis, mount to bracket, along with the loose heat shield plate. Left side was easy. Nice job!

    Hey Jason! So happy to see you making videos again along with the weight loss, congrats! Just in time with a question if you don’t mind. I have an e60 now(dreading selling my e46) but weirdly my e60 started rpm fluctuating a few weeks then stopped. Now what’s happening, is when I start to drive, by the first to second shift, the Rpm’s shoot straight to 6-7 and does not go down even when foot is on the throttle. I don’t know why this is happening, but any info could really help, I lost my job and really need help to at least diy to my best of my abilities before touching my savings on a mechanic. Thank you 🙏

    Man my car had vacuum leak at the PCV HOSES/ Crank Case Vent Valve & car been running lean.
    2000RPM car stutter and rattle bottom right side. Now that I trace the issue, I am confident that at @13:20 this Mount and heatshield is causing the sound!
    Cause your video I’m able to try replace PCV/ CCV Kit & Engine Mounts. Let’s hope this does the trick lol

    Might want to check the book. I understood the fasteners (at least for the M3) used to secure the front subframe reinforcement plate are torqued to yield, meaning the fasteners can be used just once and need to be replaced anytime they are loosened. The tightening sequence includes turning the fastener to a specific torque value and then proceeding with a specified angle of turn to achieve the yielding of the fastener and the required clamping force. Reuse of a yielded fastener can result in its failure due to cracking or fatigue.

    • @gregsmith332
      @gregsmith332 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engine mounts are supposed to be torque to 33 ft lb; the transmission mounts to 15. The reason why he never torque to anyting the suspect is because:
      1) he's lazy and
      2) his sponsor, Milwaukee, doesn't make a doesn't make a reasonably priced torque wrench.

    My X5 has 164k miles on it with original engine and trans mounts, and sometimes I use to feel vibrations, but after switching to Liquid moly 5w-40 plus anti friction it reduced that vibration at idle significantly, then I switch to Motul which are even better oil and its even less plus the LM anti friction, maybe its just quality oil the engines are happier with. Ive switched to castrol, mobil 1 and even shell, in between and there's a difference in vibrations, there is definitely oil quality in the equation between vibrations mixed with bad mounts.

  • @seanpaul3050
    @seanpaul3050 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another common issue that causes vibration at idle is where the DME allows the idle speed to drop just a bit too low. For the E90 you can use INPA to increase the target idle speed. You can only do it if the engine is actually switched on and at normal operating temperature. I don't know if you can do it for the E46.

    I encountered an issue during the removal of the transmission bracket. Not sure if the previous owners replaced the pipes or the fitment or my 2004 330ci is different, but I didn’t have enough room to remove the nut holding the bracket that connects to the transmission mount because of the placement of the pipes. Looks like I need to drop the pipes to access that space.

    Would it be possible to get the transmission mounts out without removing the fan as a whole and instead use your method 2 of the other video and simply remove the fan blades and shroud? Additionally, if the headers are off of the car would the engine lift up more evenly? I saw another video that believed that the exhaust is what make the passenger side "heavier" when jacking it up.

      @@50sKid yours have xenons? It might be worth replacing the projectors as the chrome finish inside burns out over time so you get reduced light output. It's about $150 for a pair. But well worth making a video on replacing them (I think).
      I know my E46 xenon projectors started to fade before I got rid of the car. I replaced the lenses but it wasn't as bright as expected. Someone mentioned the projectors to me but sold the car before I could do them.

    Engine support bar before you lose a finger. That’s like working under a car without jack stands.

    I removed the cabin filter, housing right above the engine to make it real easy to lift

    fyi electric fan is NOT an upgrade. The electric fan can fail, causing you to blow the coolant system if you're not carefull. The always running waterpump mounted fan is great!
