What a neat instrument! I've never been interested in flutes but then I never knew that there were bass flutes. :) My interest is definitely piqued

Why are there trill keys on the vertical bass but not on the transverse bass?

The transverse bass is a 1000 series, while the vertical bass is an 1100, so the vertical bass is part of a higher-spec model. The JBF-1000 is more of a budget-friendly entry-level bass :)

@@justflutes But this is where I’m confused. Whether its entry level or artist level shouldn’t trill keys be included regardless of level?

You would think, but it is not, and has not been, uncommon for basic-level bass flutes (and indeed many higher-end vintage basses) to be made without trill keys. It is only in recent years that some makers of lower-priced instruments have begun to include them as standard on all their bass flutes. You will often find that many of the house-brand budget basses that various music shops have made for them are made without trill keys as well. (It's why you will often find, on flute shop websites, that it will be specified that a particular bass flute has trill keys, because that hasn't always been a given.) It is likely a holdover from the days when it was assumed that bass flute parts would generally be simple bass lines or sustained notes, and trill keys were an unnecessary added weight to an already bulky instrument.

@@justflutes That makes senes. But here is another question why does the bass no have the b-flat lever?

Same answer...it has always been assumed it is unnecessary to play most existing bass flute parts. The only basses currently made with the Bb lever as standard equipment are the Sankyo and Guo basses, all others are without, even the very high end ones like the Kingma and Kotato. (Though I'm sure, as they are handbuilt, that if one really wanted one, one could order a bass with it.)

marching vertical bass flute anyone? Possibility?

It's 2024.......... yet it's sad that our country STILL offers kids the same instruments, but never mentions more unique ones. This is why so few people play certain instruments....... bc, growing up, they never knew the others even existed. I'm interested in the vertical bass flute, but it's almost impossible to find. And I wouldn't dare order one without testing one out first!
