At 20:11. Sloop John B was an old Caribbean song (from the Bahamas). I remember hearing my parents sing it and others (but can't remember who).
I always smile when the Beach Boys sing (so politely) "I feel so broke up"😊😊😊😊😊

“A Postcard from California” is my second-favorite solo Beach Boys album, behind only “Pacific Ocean Blue.”

Super 👍 episode featuring Mr. Alan Jardine! That was great having you share your knowledge and stories about “AL.” Love that you were lucky enough to meet him and ask him your own questions. Thank you Matthew and Adam. I love Al Jardine’s vocals very much. You’re right, it’s always a good idea to shine a light on Al’s contributions to The Beach Boys. Warm Regards from Old Highway 66 in Oklahoma.

It is indeed Al singing the falsetto lead on Be Here In The Mornin’ on the Friends album. You mentioned Al playing bass on The Girl From New York City… it is also Bruce with the falsetto part, his first on a Beach Boys recording.

Great episode guys! Always fun listening to knowledgeable fans talk about their appreciation of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys! And thanks for the support of BECOMING THE BEACH BOYS, 1961-1963 [McFarland 2015]

Great book. So much detail. Then, I find out that you're from my hometown-- good ol' Bowie.

Al Jardine was aspiring to be a dentist before committing to being a beach boy. Say what you will about him but he was good enough to hang with Brian and Carl on the vocals and that alone is impressive.

I recall Mike said that he told Al, he could look down a lot more mouths as a
Beach Boy tha a dentist! 😅

I met Al backstage at a concert back in '86 and had a really nice talk with him, what a nice genuine fellow. My tidbits:
    - Al played double bass on the first 'Surfin' recording sessions
    - He encouraged the BBoys to wear striped shirts like his heroes the Kingston Trio.
    - He sang a lot of Brian's parts live especially after Bruce left. You can really hear these on the '74 live album
    Great guy!

I can't believe that I only just discovered your channel and show on TH-cam just a few days ago and now you have ended the show. I've gotten alot out of your album analysis especially. Matt really makes the music cone alive when he demonstrates a song and shows the chord progressions. I especially love his cover of 'Forever' with Matt's mournful yet soulful fiddle playing. You guys should do a new show which focuses on discovering new and i interesting music that you might not have jeard inthe past due to whatever reason. I think it would make an excellent show and I've already gi en you some ideas in other comments on different videos that I posted in the las four days or so. I've beenbored and you guys have done a wonderful job entertaining me so thanks!

Matt, that surprises me how little people thought of Al. First the critic saying he can't play and then not even being thought of for his contributions as a member until 1980, though he'd been there since the beginning. I'd always thought that All was popular and a much loved member. Was my mind playing tricks on me?

Enjoying your insights and history of the Beach Boys. Al Jardine also grew up in Somerville, NY a suburb of Rochester! I never knew this until a few years ago! While he was born in Lima, OH, he did live in NY for a few years! David Marks also was living in NY before and up to the 50th tour! This is really cool - AL touring his childhood home in NY: th-cam.com/video/GIuqkQm6FwA/w-d-xo.html

Al was the one who played double bass on Surfin and Brian played druns, which I didn't know either.
In regards to the Kingston Trio I haven't heard that much from them but I absolutely love their song 'Try to Remember' that time in September (O believe that is the title). I first heard it in the movie from 1976 that stars David Bowie in his first leading role, the masterful 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' I don't want to do a deep explanation, review, and analysis of it because I couldn't do it justice and it would be simply too long. All I can do is to tell you that you should watch it bery soon. I'm sure you could buy it on a movie app but their country s a great dvd release as part of the 'Criterion Collection'. It's a finely done rerelease which I believe has two different versions of the movie along with some other stuff. I have a different release which is two discs as well. The Criterion relssue is the one I've seen get great reviews.

Just started listening to the podcast a little while ago. Guess I've got a lot of catching up to do. You sort of cleaned up the canard about Al leaving dental school to rejoin the BBs. I'll go further. Al was in college only a year or so. Unless you're Doogie Howser DDS to get into dental school almost certainly, one has to graduate from a 4 year college, usually with a science or health related major, get good grades, take a board exam and get admitted to a dental school. Al was a long way from getting into dental school. I listened up on your comment about No Go Showboat that it features Al's high voice and then Brian cuts in over that. That was interesting to hear the difference. Finally about Al's guitar powess. I had read he hit the wrong chord sometimes and he may have played unplugged or turned down at times. I heard the same thing about Graham Nash with the Hollies. At least in Al's case he often had to deal with like Eflat7th chords instead of like the typical G-C-D which are much more guitar friendly. Good work! I'll be listening! It'll take some effort to get through all the fiddle solos though. Speaking wryly. Go on, do your thing!

Al is the only Beach Boy that's not a native born Californian. He was actually born in Ohio of all places.

A few of my thoughts on Al:
    1. Al sounded more like Brian than anyone in the band! Help Me, Rhonda and Wouldn't It Be Nice sounds like the same singer to me! The middle section of I Know There's An Answer and his falsetto in Be Here In the Morning are other examples.
    2. He had the best voice in the 2012 reuinion! Carl was my favorite singer of the Beach Boys. But since he past away, it's Al!

So, is the story of Brian (the quarterback) missing a handoff to his running back (Al) causing Al to get a broken leg not true?

    • @beachboyshangout
      @beachboyshangout  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

No - I understand that story to be true from Al and Brian's Hawthorne High days.

    I have a special question.
Is it true that Al Jardine still have both his parents?
If it is true, then it is quite amazing.
Hope it is okay for me to ask such a thing.
But if anybody knows, it has to be you😊

    • @beachboyshangout

I'm actually not sure but I would really doubt it considering Al's age. As a side note, I just found a clip of Audree Wilson and Virginia (Al's mom) Jardine on TH-cam! Short but VERY cool!!!

Al my favorite! So under rated. He can still bring it where sadly Brian can no longer 😢. Al should just bring Blondie into his Endless Summer Band and continue. Brian needs to stop immediately. It’s too bad Mike & Al cannot stand each other otherwise they could combine into just one band with Bruce too! Loved Al’s solo album
“Postcards from California”! PS- Al plays a beautiful 12 string guitar on their great cover of “California Dreamin”! I have seen several times and he can really play!

Al is my least favorite of the core members mostly because his leads and his songwriting influences are the least interesting to me. Bruce isn’t much better on lead but his classical influences are much more my style
