    even in the 2000's the internet was a lot more social. I miss chat rooms, I've meet some good friends in Chat rooms growing up, and I would love to meet more people! just nobody gets on chatrooms anymore lol

    Im 36 now so I as about 13 when I started using AOL, ICQ, The Palace chatrooms. I met my first gf in a chatroom back in 99. She lived just 30 minutes away and we were the same age...I do miss these chatrooms and online forums.

  • @NastyNatey
    @NastyNatey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Chat rooms felt fairly anonymous and there was a thrill in the novelty of connecting to people in that way. It also felt fairly niche and somewhat formal to sit at a computer and dial in, whereas now we have instant broadband internet at our fingertips. You really had to work for it back then. The internet now is less anonymous, people are able to build a front facing facade of how they want their life to be perceived by others via social media. Another note: i distinctly remember internet directory books could be bought at bookstores in the 90's with website addresses in them. I miss the old internet in a way. It felt a lot more magical

      Nthrilla This is so true and a great way to put it. The internet really was magical back in the day but now it really has lost that sense of magic.

      Cloud Floyd Yup. It's boring and the magic is gone. The shows on YT think they're presenting profound new ideas but I heard them 20 years ago. Too many people were awakening to the world through random connections.

    Kid's these days have it so great technology wise. I was born in 72 and remember seeing the evolution of home consoles, cell phones, internet, computers, renting videos, buying music....while all these are still evolving, i don't think its anywhere as huge a jump in tech like us older folks have seen over the past 30-50 years.

    • @arianelcole
      @arianelcole 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chrissy 123 It's like internet shifted it's egalitarian democratic nature to a more centralized way. Back in those days everybody talked to anybody, there where lots of different web pages and forums untill facebook centralized everything. Even google was one of many search indexers. It could have been done a lot better though, like free accesible webhosting and regitrars and irc evolving hand to hand with the world wide web. If just irc evolved for native file sharing and live video we weren't discussing this right now.

    Pretty sure chatrooms got taken down because they became overrun with porn bots, I remember something a few years ago that basically said that's why Yahoo got rid of theirs. I miss chatrooms.

    • @arianelcole
      @arianelcole 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everybody blames the bots, but bots are everywhere. There's lots of spam in email services and yet people insist in keep using it, also there are lot's of scams in the www. I think that the internet of today is a reflex of the world today, people competed that much for exclusiveness that they ended isolated on the bubles of facebook or whatsapp where ypu rarely meet strangers online.
      Also services like irc got frozen in the past with their cumbersome text based interfaces.

    Chatrooms were a blast, AOL introduced Virtual places ( Chatroom ) then it was taken over by Excite - it was a lot of fun - people were characters and you never knew what to expect. Yeah it's a drag there are no chatrooms. Sort of like not having Drive Inn outdoor movie theaters - which were a big social event on summer days to watch movies and walk around and meet people. It's all closed in now - it's sad everything that was cool is gone.

Thats why I loved the AOL chatrooms cuz at least everybody felt like they were equal to one another for the most part!...lol. Google ruined TH-cam by setting livestreaming up this way and also by bringing money into the equation, cuz it has turned casual social networking for fun and meeting new ppl, into money hungry, backbiting sharks who will attack anybody who gets in the way of that. I love content creators that actually do work hard for their subs and viewers and of course their videos are really awesome and they deserve a youtube check, but I geuss I'm addressing the egomaniacs who get on here and livesream nite and day and do nothing but gossip and rant about other drama lovin channels while viewers are giving them tip money while still in the stream! It reminds me of a strip club where the guys are stuffing bills in the dancers g-string while yelling out for her to shake that ass more!!! Lmaoooo

    Yeah, what really happened to chat rooms? The concept is, correction was, great! Ex. The George Floyd tragedy, a live stream of comments reflecting people's thoughts and emotions. Obviously, there will be extremes in terms of solutions, views, etc. But as I recall, there was always the ability to zone in on a particular comment on have actual, well thought out, dialogue whether you agreed with another person's views or not. We talked, and anyone was free to join in, support a view, dispute a view, it was all there! I miss it..damn

    Remember icq? It's white pages was awsome. It worked like facebook search but way more precise, searche by gender age, and location just for a start. Internet happenned two receive two mayour inyections that made it more like real world: money and sex, and those spoiled it a little. Those dayse there wasnt cam streaming or avatars and the most sexual you could get was dirty talk with a stranger but now a days it's like genital examination. And with money there came big companies to their bissiness with their closed source services centralizing everithing and balkanizing it's users inside their growing fewd. That's how we stopped staring each other to stare great piramyds.

    Ever use discord? It lives in you

    • @jamesboone14
      @jamesboone14  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried using discord a couple of years ago to meet up with other gamers. I was playing a spaces based adventure game called Elite Dangerous and it was suggested to "join my discord" for more information. I didn't really get the "classic chat room vibe" from discord. It just seemed lot more congested with useless "go here" and "go there" for more information.
      It seemed more like a forum than a chatroom.

    • @jamesboone14
      @jamesboone14  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Follow up thought... with all of the congestion and confusion... it's no wonder why "discord" is a good name for it.

      i haven't heard of IRC in forever! My friend and I used to go to the library back in the day and log on to the internet with their catalog computers...the librarians didn't even know what the internet was and were baffled why we were spending so much time on them...yeah I'm from a small town!!
