MI Gardener is my choice of information regarding gardening. I can watch his videos for hours and hours. An incredible teacher. Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa!
Excellent! You are the only one that actually told me what to look for in finding the seeds. No one else said anything about the pollen, which makes sense now. I thought the pollen were the seeds at first. When your new to all of this, it makes it nice for someone like you to actually give a thorough explanation. Thanks so much!!
the process my grandfather used for separating seeds from husks is dropping them onto a sheet from about 3-4 feet, and have a fan blowing across them as they fall. The husks are so light that they blow away, leaving only seed.
the shake separation has been used for a long time, originating in separating cereal grains from the chaff. it's a old method that definitely is under utilized, great video.
I do something similar... On a windy day, I take a handful of spinach seeds, sprinkle them into a pan, and all the trash blows away and the seeds fall into the pan. Always looking forward to your next video!
“I shall never by spinach again”! ❤️🙏🎉🤯 A small space that grows and grows, can grow anywhere (pot on a patio possibly), likes sun or shade, and will give free seeds for life. Use fresh and then blanch/freeze for the winter. To top it off you will graciously give your harvest! ❤️🥹🥲 Thank you 🙏
Thanks for making this! I bought perpetual spinach and thought it'll just stay the same forever. Haha. It has now bolted and I didn't know what to do with it. But now I know!
I just love your videos!!! You are such a CUTIE PIE!!!!! I am in South Carolina and i'm thinking about my fall crops at the moment. Thanks for all the wealth of knowledge in every video. I have learned so much from watching you so keep em coming. Great job!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I just stumbled across your channel. Absolutely love your content. I understand that this video was made nine years ago but I was wondering if you were still doing the free seed thing…
Nice video. what is your experience for storing the seeds. will they last through the winter and ready for spring plants. I read several times that spinach seeds to not store well.
Just pour the seeds from one pan into another pan in front of a fan or blow on the seeds as they fall from pan to pan. Many cultures have their product in a blanket and they flip the product into the air and re-catch it in the blanket during a mild breeze. This blows the chaff away.
My spinach is planted with other things that are still growing, so I can't hold out on water. I definitely see the seeds. Will they die off and start to dry out on their own once they reach a certain point, or is there a stage that I should pull them out of my garden and hang them upside down to dry? Love your videos!!!
Your so awesome dude. I love your attention to detail. Your opening scene reminded me of "Invasion of the body snatchers" when the people hatched out of the seed pods. lol. any how. keep up the great work.
Hi. My spinach bolted some time ago but hasn't dried out. I'd like to use the bed to grow more but its packed tight with green bolted spinach. Can I pull them out and dry them in a hot house and let the next self-seeded crop get on with growing? Cheers
So I misheard you and I cut down some ripe seeds that are too green. I thought that was what I was suppose to save. Can I let those green seeds dry in the sun and they will be okay? Or should I discard them and just get the mature seeds that I have?
Just let a plant go to seed and die, cut off the stems with the pods, put them in an open cardboard box (apple/banana etc from shops) to dry completely indoors a few weeks, when dry hand rub the pods together over newspaper, put the seeds and chaff in a round bowl, blow huff and puff away any chaff. Done. 1000s of seeds for yourself and to share.
Nice one matey. I love that there's an abundance of videos on the Web about gardening especially like yours that promote good ideas. Thanks for sharing your info. For small seeds I use a small hole colander (not sieve) to separate the seeds from most of the chaff over a large round curve sided bowl and then outside huff puff blow on the seeds in the bowl to remove the few small light weight bits of chaff that make it through the holes. It's ok if a few bits of chaff remain though. Up the gardeners !
Would love some seeds but clearly this was a two years ago. Would gladly send you SASE. Let me know when you have some! Liked, subscribed! Great video!
bro you a genuinely nice guy and people should just be grateful your giving away free seeds just be careful if it read BILL GATES. thanks for the videos.
I was out in my garden this morning, and a coyote shot out from the woods and ran 20 feet away from me, picked up a dead chicken (I hadn't seen earlier), it must have killed before I went outside (neighbors chickens), and took off for the woods. This thing was as big as a medium sized dog. It would kill my small dog or cat, so they are now on leash, cat doesn't go out anymore. Please watch your small dog. Brighton Michigan.
