Fun fact. Burai Fighter is one of few games that doesn't 100% work in later revisions of the gameboy. If you play it on GBC or GBA you'll find that when encountering some stage bosses you instantly explode with no reason, making the game unbeatable. I wonder if this somehow influenced them to remaster it for GBC separately.
Decided to rewatch this episode since Dr. Sparkle has reached the NES version of Burai Fighter. I imagine 10-11 year me would have enjoyed this on my Game Boy. GBC remake looks pretty good too.
This actually looks like a pretty solid GameBoy game! I like that power up mechanic too, it's nice that you don't lose *everything* when you die. Excellent review as always Jeremy!
So little content on these two games, thanks for making this video and walk down nostalgia lane! Beating the NES version in Ultimate mode was the greatest accomplish of my NES career back in the day! A seriously difficult game. Minor correction you mentioned there are 3 difficulty mode, but there is actually a 4th, "ultimate" unlocked when you beat Ace. Also, not sure of the GB gameplay footage is yours, but for example at @6:17, the dot is avoided - that is actually the rotating pod, a powerup.
Agh...I totally looked past the Section Z connection. My first thought was Forgotten Worlds. Amazing to see that jump in quality to space marauder though.
This was one of my first GameBoy games back in the days. I remember when I went to the mall with my mom and asked her if I can have a new GameBoy game. She said yes and I could choose one. My best guess is that I had chosen Burai Fighter because of its cover. Looking at it now it's totally obvious: A space-suit soldier with lasers and jet-pack fighting a green dragon? Who would not want to play that - back then and today. And I was not disappointed, though it was difficult... but that kept it interesting for a long time. Great game!
On the other hand, Burai Fighter Deuxe plays on the most different devices, and it doesn’t require you to sell a kidney like Space Marauder does these days.
I always quite liked the Nes version of Burai fighter, not so much the Gameboy port. i actually liked the overhead levels in the Nes one they kinda reminded me of Thunder Force 2, just not as good.
+R TYPE 90 That's what I was going to say, in terms of the overhead levels - they're very reminiscent of the Thunder Force 2 overhead stages, though less frenetic.
Awesome review. I was completely unaware of Space Marauder, and now I must have it! I'm still on the lookout for this one, but even though it's a lesser conversion of the NES game, the console big brother version is one of my favorite NES shmups, if not one of my favorite NES games. Also, thanks for mentioning G.I. Joe: Real American Hero - another of my favorite NES games of all time, and it doesn't get enough love. It's an incredibly well designed and fun game, with a well balanced difficulty curve.
Both versions played. Oh and play the deluxe version on a normal original game boy. Dont use a gbc or gba for that. You will die when your fighting bosses yes, if you play burai fighter deluxe on game boy color (game boy version) you suddenly die out of nothing ad bosses nothing hits you. Yes i was lucky when i was on stage 5 (stage 7 in the nes) the boss was the dragon that is on the cardridge. Stay not for to long in 1 corner because its fire goes out of the screen then hits you from behind.
There was also a password (european version, game boy) that gives you 100 lifes on 1 difficulti level. Eagle, albatros, ace. Oh and ultimate that... was... haaaaaaaard hahahahaha but that password was h,g,d,m

Can't can't can't wait for more GB Works!
This series has turned out pretty interesting. It's cool to see someone who loves the Game Boy as much as I do. =)

Kudos for using footage of the Klobb while discussing Ken Lobb.
+Elshiki Thanks for noticing! I try to include little Easter eggs like this when I can.
Likewise, there's also that subtle Troll 2 reference.

Fantastic descriptions as usual, Jeremy.
This and Tetris were my first Game Boy games and I absolutely loved it!
Ooh, never knew about Space Marauder, I enjoy Burai. Keep them coming Jeremy, good stuff.

Probably my biggest issue with shmups and the like is the forced memorization.
Never gave the series a chance. Maybe I'll try it out at some point.

My very first GB game (beside Tetris). Bought it because of its glorious cover.
I have a question : Why the heck do you avoid the satelite upgrade?
Wasn't it Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle II that was a Mickey Mouse game in Japan and most Europe, BB in NA, and Hugo in Scandinavia..!
Another great video. Love both the NES and GB versions of this game.
You're my hero , thank you

PLEASE credit the music you use in these videos! The one's you use on the "Next Episode" Portions are so catchy! but I have no idea what they are...
+SoukerWorldGaming They're both the different "next episode" themes from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Go watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
+Jeremy Parish Thanks! I'll do that right now:)
+SoukerWorldGaming Let me know how it goes!
"Go wach EVA", "Okay, cool :)"
Dude, really...? As if you're telling him to just get a haircut, lol.
Why do you make these?
