I remember seeing it in the ICE theater in Chicago. 70% of the audience left before it was halfway over..mad as hell. I stayed... enthralled by the sheer mastery of an ugly truth. Spike Lee probably will not be truly appreciated for at least another 20 years.

Spike lee just confuses me. African americans in general. Youve never actually made a movie that has nothing to do with race with all black actors. Now wpuld that be necessarily based in reality? No. But do white and asians make movies about race? You keep generating your own race issues by sparking it up on tv. Maybe idk the full story but to me as a brown person its frustrating. Sometimes i just wanna watch a simple action/adventure or drama with just brown and black people and not be about race or make it depressing af becuase i HAVE to be reminded im not white or priveledged. But you americans are too obvious and to the point. Thats why your humour sucks.

One of the many things that makes Bamboozled so great is its respectful treatment of the material it is satirizing. The Minstrel shows had racist elements, and it doesn’t minimize them. Modern so called black entertainment has racist elements too, maybe worse, and nobody talks about it, but this film shows the two side by side in a way that is really powerful. But the other element that comes through is that there was a lot of art in the minstrel shows. They were satire too. They were the birthplace of tap dance, jazz and the blues (via ragtime and cakewalk), and a lot of the racist stereotypes were successful because they were relatable to people of all ethnicities (who *doesn’t* like watermelon and fried chicken?). The minstrel shows played an important role in the abolitionist movement, as modern scholarship has revealed. As an artist, Spike Lee seems to recognize that and celebrate it, even whilst acknowledging the uncomfortable and ugly racist aspect of it, or at least the racist way certain segments of society have interpreted it. I agree the end credit montage is one of the most powerful things he’s done. A lot of that art is interesting and worthwhile art, shocking as it is. I agree this part of history should be seen and understood, and maybe some of it was not as bad and offensive as we’ve been conditioned to believe- not in the way we’ve been told at least, and not so bad in comparison to the present day.

The way in which the interviewer poses these issues as a thing of the past is discomforting to see how easily problems that still exist can be seen as no longer an issue, be it racial inequality etc. etc.
