      Yes, I'd rather pay the insurance and get the moped license and buy a full Lithium electric moped like the ZEV S-8500 LR for *only* $8990 (Google it).
      The ZEV S-8500 LR's 6kWh Lithium battery has a range of 60 miles at 70mph and even farther if you go at 55mph. Its probably safer than an electric bike as it easily keeps up with all traffic on the primary and secondary roads in all inclinations. The ZEV S-8500 LR could be taken on the freeway depending on how it handles at speed. Importantly, the ZEV could be parked on many sidewalks and storefronts so you don't have to park it so much. Thus you still get the benefit of avoiding parking hassles as you get with an e-bike.
      Now comes an important part: Some would argue its an "apples-and-oranges" comparison by comparing a full speed heavy electric moped with an electric bike. But the $10k cost of the Stromer ST2S automatically makes the ZEV S-8500 a comparable alternative! I would seriously consider getting a ZEV moped right now but my DIY 28mph e-bikes pretty much satisfies all my local travel needs. I might just get a ZEV just for fun when the prices of Lithium comes down even more as the Tesla Gigafactories start producing more output. A ZEV-8500 with the capabilities described above for $8990 sounds pretty good but the same ZEV or equivalent at, say, $3999 would be even better!
      The full utility of a lithium moped ZEV S-8500 makes the Stromer look like a "trophy piece" of the well heeled -- which it mostly is.

    When the cost of an electric bike can buy you a car, then...what's the point.

    • @jimbojones2457
      @jimbojones2457 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The point is riding passion. To me cycling isn't just about transport. It's a lifestyle, it's fitness and wellbeing, it's pure riding adrenaline.

    • @samuelswatson
      @samuelswatson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +arbonac To add to what Jim said, you can ask the question the other way. Why buy a car when you could get a Stromer? Bikes and cars do different things: if you need to give someone a ride, having a passenger seat is pretty important. But if you want to take shortcuts using bicycle paths, move swiftly around the city even during rush hour, take your vehicle on the train with you, get some exercise as you ride, limit your fuel consumption, etc., then bikes are better.
      Also, consider that the price of operating a vehicle greatly exceeds the sticker price. You've got insurance, gasoline, maintenance costs, and replacement cost (which is substantially different, because bikes last a lot longer than cars).

      +big willie I agree with that, it's definitely overpriced for what it is. My Haibike cost me 5,500 aus and it's Bosch mid drive, Rock shocks, 180mm discs, 400 watt hour battery. Half the price of this bike and it's a dream to ride.

      Feed back on the ST2 . I've had mine 1yr and am happy with my purchase. I ride in town 100% of the time which has your typical shitty roads and this bike is very smooth and the vibration issues are much better than a standard road bike ( I run my Big Ben tires at 20PSI). I did add a Body Float seat post for some extra comfort! The brakes work just fine & stops very quickly. This talk about amp draw/ efficiency, I go ride work 20 miles go home plug it in and do it over the next day I'm not sure this is a big concern for most riders. If you have an issue with the price that is is your problem but the bike is solid, trouble free, and looks and rides as good as the 1st day I got it. Plus the support they have is 1st class for any questions I did have. I know over time the prices will go down and there is always a bike for everyone budget.

  • @Kendoji1
    @Kendoji1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm going to be getting an ST2 very shortly. Would consider the ST2S, but struggle to justify the extra 3K Euros for those lovely components when the motor is the same and you can get the same larger battery on the ST2 as an option. A lot of people are understandably shocked by the prices of these, but I think that says more about the state of the technology and the high r&d costs for small companies like Stromer than anything else. These are premium products for early adopters who are willing to buy-in at a high price point and who are comfortable with the fact that the technology you're buying today will be quickly superseded in the next few years.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kendoji1 Good points, it's nice that they now offer the 22" frame size for the standard ST2 and I like that it comes in step-thru and can be upgraded to the larger battery. In some ways it's a lot of money but depending on your job and love of bicycles and tech I could see it being worth it

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is absolutely nothing that can justify the price of this bicycle which is a giant theft magnet anyway, regardless of any anti-theft features it has. This thing is still sub kilowatt at 814WH! I've read that Tesla will be able to reach at least $100/KWH and possibly as low as $50/KWH of storage. The spare battery for this thing is probably over $1000! I wonder if Tesla is really able to drive down battery costs if it can put e-bikes into the hands of most people. If I could find an e-bike with 1KWH under $1000, I would definitely buy it. Right now these are just expensive toys with a lot of drawbacks. You really cannot replace a car with an e-bike. You don't not have to go to work in the snow or when it rains hard etc. So you really don't get much of a commuter benefit and you don't get the fitness factor of being a hobbyist cyclist. This kind of price NEEDS to be able to replace a car, something no bicycle can do and therefor needs to be SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper.

    • @KlipschHead281
      @KlipschHead281 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tesla benefits from Government subsidies as well so it's nice that they get tax payer money to ensure success NOT. If there wasn't a market for this bike it wouldn't sell. For something that can't be justified it sure seems people find a way to do so and more power to them.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +KlipschHead281 So Tesla lives on government cheese, I don't disagree and without gov cheese, Tesla would go out of business. However, the new factory should lower costs for US consumers without government subsidies. It is supposedly very efficient with a very efficient supply chain that doesn't manufacture batteries who's components have 10s of thousands of shipping miles costs built into them. The battery factory may turn out to be the only part of Tesla that could be profitable without gov cheese.

    • @firecape8822
      @firecape8822 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ElectricBikeReview.com Absolutely it's okay that it goes longer. I want to be okay with purchasing a bicycle that's costing thousands of dollars. I love the editing, and you even had a clip that went back to another review you had, like time travel! :) Talking with the founders and shop owners really helps too, and in this video you're able to shoot from afar someone else riding the bicycle, so we we're getting multiple angles as well. Another thing, you're passing cars as you both are bicycling (and passing parked cars too), which helps give a sense of just how fast this bike goes too.

Not any nicer than my Kalkhoff Integrale 11, which as about half the price (and still spendy). When Stromer switches to a crank motor all the bikes like this will instantly be outdated. In case you're watching this video in 2024 and you want to get into Stromer, I highly recommend the ST2S. You can grab a used one for 2-3K nowadays and there isn't too much of a massive difference between this and the ST5+. The Shimano electric shifting is super crisp - coming from an owner of an ST5 and ST7 after - and this is by far the most nimble and agile Stromer of the last 10 years.

    In an honest review. Just don't forget to mention potential buyers each stromer specific 48V battery pack replacement approximately after 25.000km to keep the range will cost € 1.750 over and over again.
    Also cutting off the rear luggage bicycle rack wich the Stromer ST2 had is no upgrade on the ST2s but an downgrade because now the users need an extra backpack on their back to be able to take along luggage with you.
    Last con besides the imo overrated price : how are you gonna fix or change a flat tire on the road with the rear wheel without quick release being unable to be taken out?

    Lifestyles of the rich and famous, 10,000$! Who is buying this? Pros: 110 miles a charge, fast, and integrated! Cons: no suspension, 10,000$ for a ebike are you kidding me, for that much money and no built in GPS/Stereo/rear rack/bottle cages, as soon as you buy it and go for one mile the bike depreciates by half the price! Also last but not least, Wired magazine found our stolen bike, and they just happened to write an article about the bike, who looses a bike worth 10,000$ in the day time! Sounded like P.R. to me! Excellent review Sir, it looks like a blast but at a serious cost! Just my opinion but people who are spending that much on a bike do not have to save up for it, they are already rich!

    I just put in my reservation for my $35K Tesla Model 3 ... for this thing to sell at $10K ...??? Well, like many has said already is simply "A JOKE"!!! Now ... if it comes with a self driving feature then maybe ... NOT!!! hahahaha

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +William Lam Nice, the 3 looks very cool... but don't forget about the $100k+ Tesla Roadster that seemed ridiculously expensive and didn't have self drive (nor did the early model S which is not upgradable from what I'm reading). Those early models were awesome but some people called them ridiculous... they served as a starting point for technology and an investment for future models like the 3. In several years we may see the tech from ebikes like this one making its way down to more affordable models so I'm very happy that some people will pay $10k to be first and help move the space forward. It's still an amazing bike after all. Many less wealthy individuals could afford this ebike by simply stopping smoking or stopping drinking for a year or two. To me, that's the joke.

  • @PilotPhteven
    @PilotPhteven 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    hard sell at the price.. when some 3-4.000 bikes do the same job.. hell, some 1-1.5k bikes do.
    And a big reason why commuters would go for a bike or ebike is the cost saving balancing the cost of the bike vs the cost of a car (or public transport). Most people can justify a purchase then as the bike sort off pays for itself within 1-2 years (obviously depending on their personal costs and situation)
    This one would take me about 7-8 years to become profitable.. that's an long time..
    Not to mention (like many have) is that the 10.000 mark brings you into a very huge electric vehicle market.
    Electric scooters, electric motorbikes (Zero S).. even electric cars (Renault twizy) And you'd STILl have money to spare after
    It's a really awesome bike, with some great technology in it. But seriously.....

    What an awful review. As a proud owner of a Stromer this guy should not review the bike. It's insane to compare the ST2S with the ST1. The real comparison would have been between the ST2S and the ST2. However, the "best" idea that this guy had, was to disregard the ST2 and push like a commercial spot the ST2S. This is not the way I would choose a bike. Maybe the STROMER guy would have been a better person to review the product and give us an idea about how good it is.

    It is a really polished and well enginered bike and it should cost more than all the other frankinstein bikes that are out there, but 10 grand is too much. It should be more like 6 grand and then I would jump on it. And they do have one for 6 grand but it doesn't have the range and features of this one. The wobbly wheel that they filmed just needs to be trued but judging by the way this guy was riding the bike I don't think he knows anything about mechanics or bikes or anything.

      I do my best to film and ride... travel around the country, sometimes sleeping in my car, not always the best rested and the bikes are handled by shops or companies so I just go with what they've got. I'm learning what I can but indeed, don't have expert-level mechanical skills or bike knowledge yet :)

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nisco Racing Hi Nisco, I think a big part of the price for both ST2 models is the custom frame, custom carbon fork, integrated display systems and free over-the-air wireless cloud system for updates, GPS and security. They definitely pay a lot for the battery cells which are Samsung high quality super-energy dense and you get a full kWh here which is more than double most ebikes. Stromer has to pay Shimano for their cutting edge drivetrain and electronic shifting systems and then factor in that fewer ST2 models will sell because they are so expensive so the price is boosted even more. Cheaper bikes can go for volume and make less on a unit per unit basis. There's also marketing and support to pay for because they have to provide a higher level of service for such an expensive product. Those are my thoughts at least, I welcome others to join in and comment.

I have an electrical bike for years and trust me you don't need such difficult technology (I have noticed when the electronic display broke down... I just hit 3 speeds for different slopes with real buttons)... Still too difficult... Everything should be automatic and without buttons.

    • @ElectricBikeReview

      +Dom Johnson I'm with you... the technology is all custom, even the frame and it syncs to the cloud?! They had to design all of this just for a bicycle and it works extremely well. The two business models are low volume high price and that's what Tesla has done with the model S and X but eventually some technology trickles down and the cheaper more basic designs benefit so I see this as a trend setting ebike that is unique now for really pushing the limits but actually serves as an investment into future awesome tech :D

      +ElectricBikeReview.com Absolutely, good points. If people took the time to really think about it and crunch some numbers, eBikes end up putting you in the black over their lifetimes. I currently have Turbo S and I figured it paid for itself in the first year base on my commuting situation, not to mention the exercise, fun and low mileage on my fancy car. Although it will take much longer to with this Stromer :)

    question: why these companies don't use belt instead of chain? bicycles with automatic shift without cluster nor multiple disks do exist, so why not an automatic shifting belt driven e-bikes? - great review, amazing bike, unfortunately last year bought a WV Golf Variant for 13000€, so that kind of price tag on a bike is out of reach for me.

I have seen one ebike with internal gearing and a gearless motor from SMART electricbikereview.com/smart/ebike/ but otherwise the belt is usually only paired with a stand alone geared hub and the motor is moved to the front wheel which impacts steering (unless the motor is very small and light like on the Faraday Porteur: electricbikereview.com/faraday/porteur/ )

      +Manuel Abella Hi Manuel, I've ridden Stromer and other ebikes with lower charge and they feel largely the same. The battery capacity on the ST2 models is so large that it doesn't really feel like the fun changes. I used to own a Haibike and had the same experience, it felt great until the very end and I always avoided letting it fully discharge to support the health of the cells.

    Very cool bike in the right city... I live in Singapore where there's been a proliferation of e scooters and e bikes. If you think the battle between normal bicycles and cars are bad wait till you see the outcry when e bikes expand on those same roads. The Spore Govt recently put in strict laws around where and how fast e bikes can go (not sure how they will enforce though). Why the rules and outcry? Cause e bikes go as fast as congested slow moving city traffic, combine that with a few lunatic riders and you have a recipe for backlash. We've seen a rash of e bike deaths with riders getting run over by trucks and cars for one reason or another. In saying that I'm sure with proper enforcement and right environment these e bikes will their place. Personally I'm an avid cyclist and would ride an e bike but not in my country.

    The way I see it, it should be called OMNI UN-CONNECTED. Mine would not connect properly since day one. Stormers General Manager told me that a new interface was being developed, and Stromer was going to fix the bikes. The promised date came and went, and I found out (not from Stromer, but via LinkedIn) that he went to a competitor. After finding out who the new General Manager was and making contact, I am told that the fix will be $299. (I had asked Crazy Lenny's to let me know when this would be available, but never heard a word.) So, I asked again about getting the fix, and was told by Gary at Crazy Lenny's that it would be $650! In trying to contact the 2nd General Manager at Stromer, I see (once again via LinkedIn) that he had left Stromer, and was looking for a new job.
    In addition to the connectivity issues, I am now on the 3rd SuperNova M99 Pro. And with only 40 miles on it, 4 of the LEDs have gone out. No resolution in sight on this issue either.
    Now don't get me wrong, excluding my experiences with the Stromer, I have had great pricing and service from Crazy Lenny's. But, I am riding the Bulls Lacuba belt drive and the Trident E-Spike more and more, and the Stromer less and less. I have installed the LAPA GPS tracking devices on them, and they ALWAYS work! For the Stromer, I bought a $150, 4 pound ABUS lock, and that is the last money I am putting into this over-priced, under-performing bike.
    The ST2S is a wonderful concept, executed poorly, by Stromer, with a network of dealers who can't be any better than the manufacturer is.
    DO. NOT. BUY.

      As for connectivity, it is useless. If you already have this bike, hide a LAPA (or similar tracking device) on it and don't throw good money after bad.
      If you haven't bought this bike, look instead at Bulls, Haibike, Specialized, or R&M.
