Jay, I bought my 120pdl because of your content. I've seen many reviews but yours was the one that sealed the deal for me. Love the pdl, I'm a heavy dude and this is very stable, I'm not winning any races with it but it's still fast if I'm really pushing it. Love kayak fishing.
I've flipped a native slayer 10 and my pa14. Both in 44 degree F water temps.had ice fishing bibs and jacket on. If it wasn't for a PFD I would be dead. Scary scary stuff. Happens in an instant
You are now officially hooked (pun intended) . For over 40 years I've paddle fished from both canoes and kayaks. From small no motor lakes to the skinniest mangrove shorelines there is no replacement for paddle craft. I agree get a cart. Rotomold wears through fast.
Look into an anchor trolley and an anchor wizard or a retractable clothesline with 50’ of 595 paracord. Add a 5 lb anchor with 20-50’ of anchor line. You’ll love being able to anchor and position the kayak perfectly and stay put in a stiff breeze.
Things I've learned from my first time out in my Old Town Sportsman: 1. Get some kayak wheels, there fold up neatly and you dont need to drag it anywhere. 2. The instant reverse is amazing. Without taking my hands off the rod I could spot lock next to heavy current simply by a couple pedals forward, one back... 3. The slot below the seat is perfect for your tackle tray. No need to turn around to tie something else on. 4.... I guess those were the major points lol. Cheers Jay!
I've got a Jackson cusa FD and I love it. If I'm fishing solo I prefer my kayak to my boat even, almost regardless of the lake (with the exception of the really really big lakes). Also, river trip on the kayak are amazing. You have to plan a put in in take out, but it's awesome being able to cover a ton of ground in a river your otherwise wouldn't touch unless you had a small jetboat.
@@jkramer5512 same here, but single downrigger. The majority of the water i fish only allows one rod. Nothing more fun than hooking a salmon on a kayak!
I love my old town 120 pdl. I have the wilderness kayak cart and it fits perfect. If I’m not going far, I don’t even need to strap it on it fits so good. When I retire, that’s the area I’m retiring too. I have a cuzzin that has a fishing lodge and guides on lake of the woods.Great to see you kayak fishing. Thanks for the video
Yes. The answer is yes. I love my fishing kayak! I can get into places others can't. I love exploring little lakes and ponds I wouldn't otherwise notice!
The what you have and how you use it is so true! I hauled my canoe into Abraham lake, Alberta this past weekend to attempt for lakers! it was wild with waves and depth but was worth it!
When landing a big fish with your net in your right hand, dip the net into the water on the right side of the kayak then lead the fish around the nose of your kayak and into the net. Be sure to keep your rod tip almost vertical so you have some room to give the fish a little line if it takes a run. Pull the fish into your net and lift it. You stay dry, you’re never twisting your back and you never cross your hands. Try it. ;)
Jay for spot locking with the peddle drive I would add an anchor trolley system. Then buy a small kayak anchor. You will be able to position the boat in the spot you want very easy and keep the nose in the wind.
Are they worth it? 100% yes! We just posted a video of a hard to reach place when the water levels drop and you cannot get in with even a rowboat. Big fish waiting. Keep up the great work Jay!
Nice to see some content from NW Ontario! Glad I stumbled across this. We have so many great little lakes around here that you can't drive a boat trailer into. Looking at a fishing kayak right now ... trying to decide if it's right for me.
I love my Feelfree Lure for my YakAngling Tube Channel and have done a lot by boat and canoe also but the yak is the best way to go even though there is a lot of work involved getting it set up. Great Video Jay!
Love kayak fishing, actually took it out on Lake Winnipeg yesterday, couldn't get into a good position to cast or drift so I just trolled around, got one small pike. Amazing how much even a smaller fish can pull you around, granted I don't have peddle drive just a paddle but that small pike had me facing it by the time I had the rod out of my holder.
Nice rod sir! I got an NRX that is 11 years old now and it still slays. Those rods are worth the money in my opinion they are complete weapons soo sensitive, light ,and has lots of power
hey what some guys do is add a scotty rod holder on the t slots just so when you catch a fish and net it you can putit in the rod in the holder saves you time or if you have fix your line
Love your videos. I have a yak that I love fishing in so it's great to see a made in Manitoba video for this segment of fishermen. I also recommend the Ultraskiff for when you need back country access but want to put in a longer day. Way more comfortable and easier on the back.
Great video! I am now wishing I would have gotten a similar kayak as you were using. I opted for the Perception Outlaw 11.5. The thing is a tank. Stable, but slow and heavy in the water. Pedal driven with a rudder is definitely advantageous. Also, having a kayak that can be paddled or pedaled uostream would be ideal. I barely could paddle upstream against maybe a class I rapid section of the James River in my Outlaw. One thing you may want to check into is a drift sock. That will help slow down the yak in wind or current. Would want an anchor trolley to use too so as to make sure you are positioned well...that and the rudder should be great. And as was already pointed out...a cart is a game changer for portage.
Jay Siemens Managed to get out on Sunday for two hours with the canoe and my 5 year old daughter outfished me 7 to 1 in 90 minutes.. wind came up and had to bounce! Felt good to get out and catch some Walleyes!!
A little of advice, I noticed your net is just like one I owned a few years ago, they are only good for a certain weight. Mine broke when I caught a pike that was a little too heavy for the net. The top plastic broke at the point where it locks in. I recommend you fortify it at the Y where it locks in. Use either braided line or the old type black fishing line, wrap it tightly around the Y then seal it with super glue or nail polish. That will increase the weight capability of the net, if not I guarantee your net will break some day.
It'd be dope to see you and Scotty Green do a Kayak fishing adventure/review/comparison. He'd probably have great feedback from doing many paddle trips in LOTW. Great Video!!
Question for the fisherman here. Has anyone ever trolled for walleyes at 15-25ft using a split shot and a shad rap or crank bait? Would you recommend a shallow or deep runner? (I would imagine a deep runner would just drag on the bottom depending on the speed) Would a swivel be necessary to avoid the rap getting twisted up? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'm just getting into fresh water fishing here in Ontario and I must say, I really appreciate your videos. Would love to get your opinions on types of beginner fishing boats and gear also. Keep up the great contend Jay👌🏾💯👍🏾

Can't stress enough about wearing a PFD. Hear in Colorado there's been 4 drownings already this year. Always wear your PFD
And don’t drink and boat!
Do not get to cocky that's when you get hurt know your capable of, practice flipping your kayak and getting back in. I flipped once I almost drowned.
