I’m 15 Turning 16 and literally getting a job and saving specially to care for my own Bluey, I’m not in a rush, I just want to make sure I do everything right!
That is really great to hear! Goodluck with your job, and saving your own money to buy your own Bluey will make it that much more special. You sound like an intelligent person, so do your care research and you will be fine 🙂
Thank you so much for your clear instructions and good advise for those of us who are new to this wonderful life of ‘parenting’ a young bluetoung. A fantastic experience with an amazing little creature! ❤️
This is normal Blue-tongue lizard behaviour. When they feel slightly threatened, for example mistaking you for a predator, they will hiss, open mouth wide, stick tongue out and try to bite. To try tame your Blue-tongue lizard, You can try feed it in your presence. Use feeding tongs and get yummy food and encourage it to chase it around the enclosure. You can gradually increase handling time and regularity of handling and this assists to tame them down a bit. But all Blue-tongue lizards have different personalities. At the end of the day some will always be a bit sassier than others 🤣 Another way to assist with temperament is to reduce stress by having enough hides, substrate deep enough to dig and hide in. But again, there is no need to worry, this is normal behaviour.
I know this is a bit old, but I have a 9 month old Halmahera and am wondering whats a good amount of handling. Hes still nervous, specially if I move my hand too much he will mouth open. So I try to remain slow around him/her
Ah yes, I've handled a few blue tongues in my time, they're a bit like a stray cat: They're wary of you, but if you can get close enough without scaring them off, they may let you touch them.
Beautiful Melanistic Blue Tongue! One prettiest ones I've ever seen! Just wondering how much was it and where did you get him? I've been looking for a while now
I got this fella from Reptile Addiction in Darwin Australia. For more information on morphs and some of Reptile Addictions collection there is a video we made about Blue-tongue lizard morphs 😊
