    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the topic, as a new owner of EMX1, that’s exactly what I’m currently occupied on. I would suggest to have chapters by type of photo: action, birding, landscape, portrait,... or specific situations like low light, high/low contrast, etc... this is how I organize my custom settings. My personal cent: turn lens reset off. It avoid focus hunting not just after switching camera on ( not really important) but when turning on after iddle status. For situations where you are waiting with a prefocused distance, something to happen, this option may add one second extra time to refocus again.

    Thanks Peter, a really useful video. I've had my EM1X for 2 weeks now and am absolutely loving it. Using it for wildlife I've found that the C-AF is a useful step up from the EM1ii which I've been using for the last 2 years. For the EM1X I downloaded the full manual from Olympus, all 683 pages (and I thought the EM1ii was deep!), and basically spent a day just setting up the camera. It was well worth the effort. Just 2 of the settings that I find particularly useful is to have the AFL button set for back button focus and for the function lever to switch between a single autofocus point and a cluster. I've also set my dial custom settings as follows C1 for fast action (eg birds in flight), C2 for pro capture, C3 for high res and C4 for live ND. Like you Peter I'm sure I'll be changing the settings options as I spend more time with the camera but time spent at the outset is definitely worth it.

    • @furiousdoe7779
      @furiousdoe7779 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan ..where do you get the data from for the particular settings for C1 (fast) , C2 (Pro Cap) , C3 (HRes) .

    • @alanwood5590
      @alanwood5590 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Henk Zegwaard . Hi Henk. The data is partly from experience (C1) and partly from the manual and the custom menu settings (C2 - C4). For example for birds in flight I need to prioritise speed so I set the camera with a base set of settings (eg shutter priority at 1/2000, Auto ISO and C-AF as well as any other settings required, including, for example C-AF sensitivity) and then allocated those settings to C1 via shooting menu 1, Reset/Custom Modes). I can always dial in changes to those settings as required but I can call up the base settings very quickly now simply by going to C1. For my C2 - C4 settings I set the camera parameters for each of the desired functions via the custom menus and then allocated those settings to the appropriate custom mode. Each one required a bit of working out and I basically sat down for a day with the manual deciding what I needed and setting the parameters accordingly. With my EM1ii I went quite some time without allocating any settings to the custom modes and only started to do so once I gained a bit of experience to know what I wanted. Hope this helps.

    Nice video with relevant topics. Didn't know about the clock being set with GPS. That's a great feature since more than once I've forgotten to reset the clock after arriving at the shooting destination.
    I also like My Menu. For starters I don't bother with anything I can access via Super Control Panel. That's simple and easy so I don't see the point in duplicating that. What I like to put in My Menu are features that I use but aren't in SCP based on shooting scenarios. For example using Menu 1 for features related to shooting action -- ISO Auto Set, Sleep, AF Limiter, C-AF Sensitivity, C-AF Release Priority, Tracking Subjects, and Flicker Reduction. Menu 2 is for Flash. Menu 3 for shooting modes. Menu 4 for special camera functions like GPS. No doubt this might change but so far this seems helpful at getting all the menu items that are otherwise spread out in the menus into one place. Funny thing is that at first thought each menu in My Menu only held one function. Then I messed up and added a second to the same menu and found that was wrong! LOL
    Agree the upgrade in AF is impressive. I didn't expect S-AF to be better but it definitely is. Seems like you can lock onto a subject much better. For example, with the E-M1 II, when shooting a bird in branches the AF had the tendency to jump to a branch. That could be addressed by using a button to set focus but it was still annoying. The E-M1X just locks right onto the precise point you've selected. That's been a nice surprise. (Maybe I'm imagining this but I don't think so).

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When using the GPS to set the time, remember to set time zone also. You have very good point about the My Menu and SCP. It is clever not assigning items to my menu if it can be controlled from the SCP.

    Got one. Love it.

    • @Raysnature
      @Raysnature 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll elaborate a bit.
      Faster autofocus over the em1mk2 (which I traded in for the x). I think a better noise floor though I need to take some more shots for this; I think it's maybe flatter across the mid ISOs at the expense of raising the low end just a touch . All the controls you could want now brought out to dedicated buttons. In-built GPS, for some of the shooting I do this is very handy. Built-in grip, sure this is a personal thing and many don't like it but I do, allowing a quick change of both batteries. Better EVF, yes it's the same screen but the optics between it and the eye have changed and it's much better. Better video. I'm only just starting to explore video so I'm only going off the specs here really.
      Now for some truly fast prime lenses for it. How about a 300 f2.8?!

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In My Menu you can store those individual settings that you want to change during image making. C1-C4 are places where you can store all the settings of the camera, but to change one setting you need to go to menu and there My Menu is a very handy way of doing it.

As retired 72yo Italian (and non-professional) I'm thinking not to upgrade my Em1mkII but to buy a Sony FF as the second line to evaluate advantages. I hope Oly in the next future will make an "X-type" w/o vertical grip, more light, in line with the strategy of M43 size.

    I picked up my new E-M1X last Tuesday to go with my E-M1 MkII and although I've had very little time to play with it i'm very impressed with what it has done so far. I totally agree about the lack of 4K 60fps in video, but perhaps Olympus can do a firmware update in the future to rectify this. As a 100% Olympus user since 1967 I can honestly say that this is the best camera so far, yes it has some negatives, but so do Canon, Nikon, etc. Over the next few days I'll get a chance to take it out and give it a good workout, then I can set it up the way I want it and then I'll take it from there. Great videos Peter, please keep up the good work.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you like the form factor and usability of E-M1X then get a second one. Having two identical bodies helps. Everything work the same way. If you need a camera for something else like travel, then I would suggest, OM-1 or even OM-5. They are smaller. OM-1 is also an option if you want a new body than E-M-1X. OM-1 has a new sensor, processor and better AF than E-M1X.

    Hey there... good vid. Well yeah it was pricey for sure but now three years later I picked one up for 1200 Canadian with just 20K SC so now not so pricey and still a fab camera. Also, finding it strange people complain about the size ..for a pro Oly camera, its about the same size as the original E1 pro and nobody complained about that.

    • @johanankarback6821

      @@ForsgardPeter Yes I did recharge the batteries so that's not the problem. I checked all the settings on the EM-1mkII and the only thing that I found was different was that the time before the camera goes into "sleep mode" was 1min on the EM1-mkII and 5min on the EM1-X. I've changed that now and I'm going to test if that helps.

    Thanks for your clear and highly instructional videos Peter. I was interested in the X when it first hit the market and bought mine two weeks ago (March 2020) after comparing with the MkIII and the price in Australia was slashed dramatically for one week. I use the X almost exclusively for bird photography and have found it to be better than the MkII in combination with the 300/f4 + 1.4TC.
    I need some assistance please. I have C1 set for stationary birds and C2, 3 & 4 for birds in flight (BIF) with different C-AF Sensitivity settings depending upon the bird's speed of flight and path. B1 menu allows the user to assign C1, 2, 3 or 4, amongst other functions, to L-Fn, which would be ideal to switch rapidly from a BIF to a stationary bird. I assigned C1 to the L-Fn button but can't get it to work with the 300/f4 nor my 12-100 f/4 nor 12-40f/2.8. It will work when I assign DOF Preview to the L-Fn button. What am I doing wrong?

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems that if you have the C2 on the L-Fn button does not chance the settings to C-1. If you have P, A, S or M on it will change to C-1. Unfortunately it looks to be that way. I did test this with the E-M1 MKIII.

    Hi Peter thanks for this I am happy to have located this as I have been grappling with the settings of my new M1X for the past week or so with some success & some failures. I am a convert from Canon & owned the 1DX. But now I migrated all my kit to Olympus portability image quality & compactness were my main reasons for switching. I am not disappointed. I can share that I have been unable to separate the focus function from the shutter button in both S-AF & C-AF modes. I can reappoint a rear button to focus but focus is still possible from the shutter button. To completely separate focusing to a rear button I had to set focus mode to MF in which case the shutter button will now only activate the shutter. You might have something to say about this. I am keen also to hear how you might approach setting the camera up for action shots outside of the three defined (Cars/Trains/Planes) as I do a great deal of nature photography dragonflies/birds in flight. So I have hit the bell & looking forward to future updates. Thanks again for the clarity in this video.

      Alan Wood thank you. However I have been down this road and while I get the back button to operate focus it doesn’t do so exclusively. The shutter button still holds this function too which defeats the object. As I say I have achieved it by setting AF mode to MF. It’s confusing & most probably is me since there are many little gremlins I am finding that don’t make immediate sense. I think I will solider on and keep experimenting as its not critical at this point. But I do appreciate your intervention. When you set it up did you completely separate the function to away from the shutter button?
