"Monotheist" is the greatest comeback album in the history of metal.

@@thrallsofmetal this would make for great video content for you guys "greatest comeback in the history of metal" My votes go to Kreator - Violent Revolution. Exodus - Tempo of the Damned. Metallica - Death Magnetic (hate me all you want, I fuckin love that album...and St. Anger was one of the worst albums in history). I also agree w/ Carcass and AtG. Also you can't forget Necrophagist with "God, I Wish They Would Put That Fucking Album Out"....I'll probably think of more to add here later

Totally with you. Monotheist was an unbelieveable banger. 14 year old me did not expect it, and its pretty "Pre-Tryptikon" . Monotheist, Morbird Tlaes and To Mega Therion are the only Celtic Frost Album i still jam on a regular basis. "Your friends are over after a night at the bar?Ok, Morbid Tales!" "You just want to have real evil shit for Yourself?" "Monotheist!"

Say what you will about the Jammin' One, but he is a brave and rugged individualist. He jams to the beat of his own drummer, a drummer who cannot be heard by the herd. We mere mortals are not destined to understand the logic of Giants & Gods. We hear with human ears, so the sublime sounds of say A Cold Lake sound like a cacophony of cringe to us. Meanwhile the blissful tones of an Altar Of Madness sound like the powerful, pounding of elder godliness to us. But the Jammin'One is not fooled, for he knows what he hears.
I for one bow to the inscrutable Titan of Jams. Hail m'Lord!

Facts. "Into the Pandemonium" is an utter masterpiece. Not only their best album, in my opinion, but also in my top ten of all time, any genre. I think the problem here is that the reviewers are listening with 2020 ears and not 1987 ears. This is a challenging listen in 2022, let alone when it was released, but context is king and the context is that this was released in 1987 when there was ZERO that sounded anything like this.

  • @seniledeathrasher2596

Great video, guys, but if you don't mind, I'd like to correct a few inaccuracies. The only song from Emperor's Return EP which was later recorded for the following full-length album is Circle of the Tyrants. Some other songs from this EP were added to the re-issue of To Mega Therion from 2017 as bonus tracks. Songs Dethroned Emperor and Morbid Tales were added to the American version of Morbid Tales EP released by Metal Blade (in 1984 on cassette and in 1985 on vinyl). The original European version released by Noise Records doesn’t include these two songs.
The song Inner Sanctum from Into the Pandemonium was written in 1985 and that is why it sounds so different from the rest of the material. As far as I know, the label forced the band to change many things on that record (including the order of songs) so it is possible that Mexican Radio was not originally supposed to be the album opener. Concerning those annoying moaning vocals, they remind me of early records of the gothic rock band Christian Death released in early eighties, but it can only be a coincidence.
The live album recently released by Triptykon includes material originally written for Celtic Frost. Rex Irae is from Into the Pandemonium, Winter is from Monotheist and the middle part of the trilogy called Grave Eternal was not previously released.

I rank my Celtic Frost as:
    1. To Mega Therion
    2. Monotheist
    3. Morbid Tales
    4. Vanity/Nemesis
    5. Into the Pandemonium
    6. Cold Lake
For me, Celtic Frost has a clear top 3 and clear bottom 3. I have the most history with To Mega Therion, with songs like The Usurper, Jewel Throne and Circle of the Tyrants being some of my favorites. But I completely understand people putting Monotheist #1. It's heavy af and it's just an amazing record. I do love the production on Monotheist as well, and it's a phenomenal album. One of the best comeback albums and one of the best final album. I don't absolutely despise Cold Lake, but it was a big career blunder for Celtic Frost. The image of the band, the lyrics, and the vocal performance of Tom G Warrior killed the album. Tom G Warrior is best at doing thrash/death metal.

  • @carlosjantarada7212

#6) Cold Lake - No explanation needed here... utter garbage.
#5) To Megatherion - Now here I need to give some explanations for sure. First off it has Necromantical Screams and Dawn Of Megiddo... two haunting and absolutely well penned tunes and Circle Of The Tyrants is also a great cut. But regarding the rest of the tracks I think they're a bit similar to their debut that I happen to like more than the ones here. So there you have it: another classic album that never resonated that much with me.
#4) Morbid Tales - And from now on it's all great stuff. Celtic Frost's debut is indeed a game changer: mid tempo heavy and somber as hell compositions that gave a substantial help to pave the way to extreme metal. Procreation (Of The Wicked), Visions Of Mortality, Return Of The Eve or the speediest opener Into Crypts Of Rays are raw, linear yet captivating sonic landscapes of total darkness. Classic.
#3) Monotheist - Now I must confess this is perhaps Celtic Frost's finest album with tons of variety and amazing compositions. Plus either be it the more melodic tracks or the raspier ones this is one of the darkest and more disturbing things I've ever listened to (and I listened to some weird stuff). There's a darkness embedded in every single tune here. Picking some of ideas from their two demos that never came out (Prototype and Nemesis Of power) and adding a crap load of more this is a hell of a return. As standouts I have the heaviness of Progeny, the almost post metal A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh, the melodic yet somber as hell Drown In Ashes and Obscured (that was previously featured on Prototype) and man... don't even start me with Synagoga Satanae. Overall I think this record deserves #1 by a considerable margin. But fact I really grew incredibly fond of the following two records throughout the ages.
#1) Into The Pandemonium - Well, the only gripe I have with this album is why the hell it starts with a half baked cover of Mexican Radio that should be on a B side. Other than that this was simply a game changer as Tom and the boys mixed their blueprint with goth rock and if I'm not mistaken this was the first time these two genres were mixed in a deliberate way. There are huge influences here from goth bands especially Christian Death and Tom's moaning voice is a blatant mimic of Rozz Williams' vocals (Jonathan Davies? WTF?). I Won't Dance, Inner Sanctum, Mesmerized, Caress Into Oblivion, Sorrows Of The Moon or Rex Irae are superb cuts that would later inspire countless bands. To sum it up this record is years ahead of its time and proof is bands like super influential bands like Paradise Lost, Anathema and My Dying Bride among others came back to drink from it several years after. Absolutely genial and ground breaking.
#1) Vanity/ Nemesis - Now this is a wrongly maligned album as far as I'm concerned. This is a version of Celtic Frost more restrained but yet it recovers lots of its dark undertones only in a more dissimulated way one has to unwrap to truly enjoy. The Heart Beneath opens up the damn thing in a powerful way, Third From The Sun keeps the adrenaline pumping while Wings Of Solitude and This Island Earth are somewhat re ashes of their Into The Pandemonium legacy. The Name Of My Bride sounds like what if Celtic Frost wrote In My Darkest Hour. On the other hand The Restless Seas and A Kiss Or A Whisper have some of the bands early aggressive traits. Nemesis closes the album picking a bit from each era and wraps up the whole thing in a superb way. Underrated as hell, this is one of the band's best records IMO and I believe it's bashed because the band didn't retrieve their evil outfits and fans were still suffering from Cold Lake's disappointment. As far as I'm concerned, Vanity/ Nemesis simply rules.

Wow... Not 1, not 2 but 3 metalheads that think the Monotheist is the best Celtic Frost release... Finally...! I also think it is their best effort. Most of my friends, although they love Monotheist, feel and think sentimental and say I can't put Monotheist at the top of the list when we have To Mega Therion or Morbid Tales. I understand the love for those albums. They are the stepping stones for what was to come and change our worlds in metal. We owe a lot of what we listen to today to those great, early Frost albums. But Monotheist is a great final stamp from a great band. It is their most mature and advanced album without compromising on what made them Celtic Frost...

My ranking : 1). To MegaTherion (catchiest riffs + heaviness = the best balance of those two things they ever achieved) 2). Morbid tales!! 3) Monotheist ( yes, thee Heaviest of theirs, but i kind of think the more modern riffage was a little stale after awhile , i.e. a few similar sounding songs, and tad too much slow stuff, but still great stuff) . It should have been the Lp made after Into the Pand......! 4). Into the Pandamonium ( i like everything on it , ...yes im weird'! 5). Vanity/Nemesis . 6). Cold Lake. i do remember one song that had a good riff. they should have reworked that one and made it heavier on another record. I'll have to see which song that is again .....

Check out the first Christian Death album, "Only Theatre Of Pain" if you haven't. A lot of the moaning you talk about on the Into The Pandemonium album comes from the influence of the vocalist on that album. The singing isn't even the best part, its really the guitar work of Rikk Agnew and the songs...its really good, and its one of the first "goth" albums, 1982. They were as scary to me as Venom's first album. I am old enough to get a good chuckle out of the Korn comparison too.

Cold Lake is a great album... If you've never heard any other Celtic Frost album. I mean it's okay for what it is but easily the weak link in the discography. (See also: Megadeth: Risk)

You didn't mention it but I actually kind of dug Tom G. Warrior's industrial band Apollyon Sun. it was better than Halford's 2WO. lol. And he brought the guitarist, Erol Uenala, from that band with him to play on Monotheist. If Jon hates Tom G. Warriors vocals, I wonder what he thinks of Coroner's vocals? They're very similar in style. Tom G. Warrior even sung on Coroner's demo "Death Cult".

Necrotic Nick- I've only jammed Apollyon Sun sparingly and it was ok. Monotheist is incredible though. I'm not entirely sure if Jon has jammed any Coroner to be honest. I know I love that band and I heard they were going to hit the studio before Covid wrecked everything.

@@thrallsofmetal Yeah, Coroner was one of those bands I always heard of in the 80s but never heard, or could acquire any of their music. But now thanks to the power of youtube and Amazon I've become a fan and have all their albums and home DVD set.

It must be you young guys. I got the cassette and the Vinyl when it came out and it wasn't a EP. It had 9-10 songs on it. Or 8-9. and if you ask anyone 45 -53 age it's Cell-tic Frost!! And Tom A-Ray-A. Don't care how he fuckin pronounces it! We didn't have the internet, we had Combat records and the Metal shop radio.

  • @Gregbaltzer

I agree that I could never get into Into the Pandemonium. I want to like it so bad, but I just can't. There are good moments/songs on it that I enjoy. Mexican Radio and I Won't Dance belong on B-sides. One in their Pride just feels out of place. Honestly, I would rearrange the song order too. I feel atmospherically there are some songs that would work better if they lead into other songs. And I feel that Mesmerized or Babylon Fell are better openers than Mexican Radio. For me, and I'm going to get hate for this, I compare this album to Morbid Angels Illud Divinum Insanus, as shitty as that album is I think I liked 3 songs. The first 2 releases will always be my favorite, after that Vanity/Nemesis and than Monotheist. I honestly can't tell you the last time I listened to Monotheist.

    1- Morbid Tales
    2- To Mega Therion
    3- Vanity Nemesis
4- Cold Lake (the vilified 😡)
    5- Monotheist ( boring 😒)
6- Into The Pandemonium (total garbage)
