3 years late - but wow that opinion on Despise the Sun is insane. Listen to it again!! Bloodchurn is the most vicious brutal song they ever recorded and the production is heavy as balls. Can't understand the hate
I love "Effigy," but "Pierced" is far from overhyped. The riffs on "Pierced" are absolutely filthy, and it went a long way toward solidifying the death metal blueprint. Some of us have been chasing that same guitar tone since. Again, nothing against "Effigy," which also defined a lot for us in the 90s. I still imagine necks cracking when I hear the main break on "Habitual Infamy." Either way, when these albums came in the mail, each provided an experience of religious proportions.
@@SewNegative IMO, Pierced deserves the first place. Not because of production or speed (hell, Liege and Crypts are faster than any song on Pierced, saying that as a guitar player), but because of how much more varied and innovative it was in terms of songwriting, they really stepped up their game with all the time changes and weird ass harmonies and polyphony.
Man it's so hard to pick. There are quite a few contenders - Pierced, Arise, Cause of Death, Once Upon The Cross, The Bleeding, etc. and I really dig the production on Retribution (Malevolent Creation) - it just might be my favorite by a hair.
I love Suffocation 10. Despise the Sun 9. Breeding the Spawn 8. Human Waste 7. Souls to Deny 6. Blood Oath 5. …Of the Dark Light 4. Pinnacle of Bedlam 3. Suffocation 2. Pierced From Within 1. Effigy of the Forgotten

Necrotic Nick- It's always been a toss up between Pierced from Within and Effigy of the Forgotten for me. Those two albums are practically ingrained in my DNA at this point.
IKR? I had to throw in Effigy and Pierced but even Breeding The Spawn can sucker punch me along with the other albums in a tight battle on what album will blow my eardrums off at any given day till I can't just choose anymore.
Breeding the Spawn was my first Suffo album I bought and it unfortunately gave me a bad impression of the band. That didn't last long because I gave them a chance again with Pierced and was completely blown away. Its really too bad because the songs on Spawn are some of their best.
Hmmm.... I love Despise the Sun. I think it's a fantastic EP from both a songwriting perspective and a production perspective. It's the closest sounding album to Pierced imo, which is my favorite Suffocation album.
Yes, the guys said here in this ranking, that production is "nothing special". If some alien come to Earth and asked me "what is death metal", I will play to him "Funeral inception". So amazangly heavy, it sounds like there are 4 guitars. And this song itself - one of the BEST death metal songs ever. This CRUSHING beginning before blast explodes !!! I really love this EP.
Wow! I LOVE "Blood Oath". This is the amazing thing about music: it's as personal as you can get. It's still not Pierced from Within though. Suffocation is amazing
Here's my ranking now that I've had a while to sit with all of these albums with some short thoughts on the hot takes. 1. Effigy Of The Forgotten (absolute classic, the first 3 songs are untouchable) 2. Souls To Deny (really underrated) 3. Pierced From Within (awesome album but the rest of the album isn't as amazing as the first 2 songs) 4. Of The Dark Light (super underrated, the guest vocals by Kevin Muller don't bother me) 5. Suffocation 6. Pinnacle Of Bedlam 7. Blood Oath 8. Breeding The Spawn (the songs are great but the production is so bad, would rather listen to the re-recorded versions)
My first death metal records were Suffocation's Souls to Deny and Nile's In Their Darkened Shrines. Not long after, I picked up Human Waste based on the gnarly cover and loved the thrashiness and raw atmosphere of it, especially Jesus Wept. But Pierced From Within has always had it all for this band, from the songs to the crushing production. 🤟
PIERCED FROM WITHIN #1 ACROSS THE BOARDS!!!! YESSSSSS!!!!! The album that took my soul at 14! Made me a lifelong fan of this band and Death Metal in general!
I enjoy Pinnacle of Bedlam too. Only part of it that disappointed me was the absence of the breakdown parts. That was a big part of their sound. I'm going to miss Frank up there on stage doing his famous hand chops during certain song parts.
Necrotic Nick- There were some on Pinnacle but it was mostly about the speed on that one. That does kinda set it apart though. I'm going to miss Frank as well. He was a killer frontman and just a solid dude.
Top 3 for me: 1. Pierced from Within 2. Effigy of the Forgotten 3. Songs From The Apocrypha (yes) I really didn't get into this band until the last couple years. I still need to listen to more of their stuff, but I have heard enough to rank at least a top 3. Great band and pretty brutal. Pierced from Within starts so "dirty" and doesn't let up until the last track ends. It is just great Death Metal to me! The latest album also kicks ass. I was very surprised by how much I liked it, but I really like it. 2023 was AWESOME for heavy music! As for following when records/CD's were released, well, I am older than all you guys, and I completely remember those days. I don't think I skipped school over it, but I remember those days. The one thing I will miss from having physical media is the fact you own it! Physical media is in steep decline thus, it won't be around forever to buy new. With all the shit concerning DRM and all that, I could see a world where songs get restricted, and I don't want that. I use Tidal for my music mostly; though I have all my music ripped to my PC and backed up as well. I don't even have a CD in my vehicle, a 2019 Ford SUV..lol. Great video \m/ \m/
I've not really listened to Suffocation a lot and I've gone back and checked them out and I'm interested to check them out. Just like kind of how you all got me hooked on immolation, that last immolation album is a fucking master piece. Hails!
I was amazed that some fans don't like "...Of The Dark Light album". For me it's top 3 record after Effigy and Breeding. Many say that it's too catchy and production is too clean for them and that's not fitting for their style. As guitar player it was cool to see that of the dark light have so many catchy and technically challenging riffs and this was huge surprise for me cause not many old bands can evolve like Suffocation still does. It's fast, agressive and very brutal, like death metal should be.
As much as i love ''pierced'', the selftitled is my absolute favorite. Songs as abomination Reborn, blind torture kill and entrails of you are fantastic.
The thing I love most most about you guys is that I can see myself hanging out with you guys shooting the shit and nerding out on death metal or metal in general. Great content!
Doug Bohn didn't disappear. He did an album with a band called Iron Lung as well as a Pyrexia album. He actually was in Pyrexia when they toured with Suffo on the Pinnacle tour...
Again solid video guys. Nick I'm almost there with your ranking with the exception of "Despise the sun" which I love to death. I almost died in a moshpit here in Athens Greece when they played Funeral Inception back in 07'.

Great channel. Love the informed and detailed opinions in your rankings. Suffocation is a band I haven't explored yet intend to rectify after this. Thanks!
Might only be an EP but ‘Despise The Sun’ is their absolute pinnacle. Wish they’d just re-recorded the whole ‘Breeding The Spawn’ album instead of the odd track.
I just wish Breeding the Spawn got remixed, I heard the re-recorded version of BtS songs in their later albums and didn't think the production fits the songs at all, and they don't have the feeling of the original version, if that make sense
I usually don’t put EP in my rankings. They are shorter albums. I sometimes grade albums by how constant an album is. Reason I rank breeding the spawn so low. I like re- recordings of the songs better in future albums. 1. Pierced from within 2. Of the dark light 3. Suffocation 4. Effigy of the forgotten 5. Pinnacle of Bedlam 6. Blood oath 7. Souls to deny 8. Breeding the spawn
Also we nicknamed Charlie guy 2.0 because both him and myself were in Pyrexia internal bleeding and Suffocation LOL except I’m old enough to be his dad. And the cancer is gone and I’m doing pretty good.
That's really good to hear! I'm late finding out, but I've gone through a lot of hard times the last 3 years. I haven't kept up with any music news at all. I have a lot of albums you are on. I did your work.
As far as I’m concerned Breeding The Spawn is the top. Songwriting wise they never paralleled that one. I’m sure many will disagree. Technically they never topped it in terms of riffing. They rarely repeat a part and yet there is flow there that I find very cohesive. Sure the production may lack compared to the other albums but there is a nice bass presence that I really love. Frank sounds fierce and Mike is pure thunder...by the way that will make 296 ball tazes.
I liked everything up until despise the sun. Doug cerrito I still believe was the sound of suffocation. You can hear that cerrito sound on the first hate eternal album. After despise it was more misses than hits.
I haven’t fully delved into Suffo really past Effigy, or Souls to Deny. Not that I don’t or haven’t wanted to, but both of the mentioned records I absolutely love. Souls was the first ever of these dudes I bought. I should have prefaced this with I am getting into a lot of death metal over the last few years. Cannibal was the only band I gave a shit about. I still have to to my Top list of death metal bands and or records hahaha. My new fav channel
Thanks for this one. I was late on this band(and death metal in general), and i didn't really know how their records were generally viewed. You're rankings were pretty similar, so it definitely gives me a better sense.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks for watching, man! It's all subjective but we ended up agreeing on a fair amount on this one. Naturally, we all strongly recommend Pierced From Within. That is a killer album to start with for Suffocation in general. It's where I started.
@@thrallsofmetal See, that was great info to learn, cuz i didn't have one. I had Effigy, Breeding and the last two. So I pre-ordered a release of Pierced that will be released soon. The existing ones are sooo much money. But for real, I really value your guys' input. You're clearly metal through and through, no bullshit. I'm almost 50 years old, I appreciate knowlegable opinions.
I've known about suffocation in 1992 my pusher gave me effigy of the forgotten on tape. Those blastbeats?we where wtf!?🤘 Been sampling alot to find breakdowns like that afterwards... they are unquestionable OG's🤟
Breeding The Spawn is honestly their best album IMO and I am crushed internally every time I listen to it that Scott Burns didn’t produce it. 😭 So I have to say that Effigy is their best. It just screams “Hey. We’re Suffocation. We’re young as fuck and we’re here to bash in your skull with a fucking hammer for 37 plus minutes straight!!”
I can remember the time when Roadrunner was so much better for sure. Suffocation is Powerful and Heavy hitting live, I saw them a few times years back. I miss the times before the Internet , discovered Suffocation around the time of Pierced From within. Awesome album, if not their best. I think Human Waste is definitely one of their best. Effigy The Forgotten is Awesome and The self Titled is Killer as well. I have to listen to the albums after the self titled more.
I said they were all 17 to 18 when Effigy was recorded but they were older than that actually. However they were 17 and 18 when they wrote the songs and that in itself is an incredible feat!
When listening to "Despise the sun" in 1998 it let my hair stand up! Still love it and "Funeral Inception" is one of my favorite songs from them. So here I very much disagree.
Necrotic Nick- I used to love this EP but it hasn’t aged as well for me. There are still some killer tracks on it, but it didn’t stand much of a chance against other releases.
@@thrallsofmetal For me "Pinnacle of Bedlam" is the album I just don´t like at all. Too modern, too polished and songs that get me nowhere. But we all have different opinions and maybe that one is just too modern sounding for an old fart like me.;-)
I went out and bought "Breeding the Spawn" not too long after it's initial release and I don't remember the production being so horrible but then again, I was 18 and I didn't pay no attention to production back then. I'll have to give it another listen and really pay attention. Side note; a first pressing of this album is rather spendy on ebay and discogs both, I know this because I've been replacing ALL of my metal albums that I owned in the 90's that I unfortunately lost in a storage unit that they were in. Nocturnus "The Key" is another that is just stupid expensive, probably the most expensive death metal album that's on my list of albums to replace. Sure, I could get Russian bootlegs on ebay of all the stuff I owned for a fraction of the price and they sound good still but it just wouldn't be the same.
Necrotic Nick- I'd love to do a Dismember ranking but I keep hearing rumors of them making a new album so I want to see if there's anything to it before we throw them in.
@@thrallsofmetal I pray that that's true. Lol Either way, the video will be great because they have released phenomenal albums. I missed their concert in 2009 because I was still under age. Until this day, I still get annoyed remembering that. 😡
This was awesome, thanks guys! I agree with most of the opinions here, except for Souls to Deny. That album starts with my all time favorite song of theirs, "Deceit", and the rest of the album is just so fkn chunky! As Joe Biden would say, "Caman man!" My ranking: 1. Souls to Deny 2. Pierced From Within 3. Suffocation 4. Effigy of the Forgotten 5. Pinnacle of Bedlam 6. Breeding the Spawn 7. Of the Dark Light 8. Blood Oath 9. Human Waste 10. Despise the Sun Deicide next!!! 🤞
Necrotic Nick- I still dig it but it doesn't hold up to the ones I had before it in my opinion. The title track is a favorite of mine though as well as Surgery of Impalement and Subconsciously Enslaved.
8. Souls to Deny 7. Of the Dark Light 6. Blood Oath 5. Suffocation 4. Pinnacle of Bedlam 3. Breeding the Spawn 2. Effigy of the Forgotten 1. Pierced From Within
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315 yeah, I think Souls is just extremely underrated. I’ll always like Pierced the most but I can’t really rank Effigy and Souls above/below eachother. Phenomenal album.
@@willburhans3018 I honestly think souls is better than effigy. Effigy is too samey, didn't age that well. Souls is a more varied and mature album, more memorable, but of course when it came out didn't make the noise effigy did. For obvious reasons tho
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315 LOL dude I honestly didn’t wanna say that I liked Souls better, but I definitely do. I mean I love Effigy, Habitual Infamy is one of my favorite suffo songs. But yeah, like Demise of the Clone, Subconsciously Enslaved, Surgery of Impalement, Immortally Condemned, just perfect songs.
You guys were completeley wrong about Of The Dark Light, Frank was the primary vocalist for that album , with Kevin Mullen doing some back vocals , Rocky Hoover was absent from that album. Saw Suffocation in Moscow years ago, and I've followem them closely ever since
Awesome vid! I too first heard Suffocation when they released Pierced from Within, to me one of the best Death Metal albums of the 90s and jam it more than At The Gate's Slaughter album (also great). I actually rank Breeding the Spawn #2, the reissued copy of it on vinyl sounds much better compared to original release, thus sounding less muddy and brings out the riffage better. Also, to me, Despised the Sun shreds, the rerecorded version of Catatonia alone is worth it. Hope 2021 brings more Suffocation. I miss Doug Cerrito, he was a major influence on my guitar playing.
Necrotic Nick- I just have the CD version of Breeding the Spawn so it still sounds pretty rough. I've been jamming Pierced From Within since I was in high school and I didn't get into At the Gates until I was in my 20's so Pierced has gotten a lot more spins for me. I think Funeral Inception is pretty damn good on Despise the Sun but I prefer the original version of Catatonia. I like the grittier mix for that one. It fits the song more for me. I'm pretty sure Suffocation plans on releasing something this year because I think I saw something about them being in the studio. It's going to be odd without Frank though.
@@thrallsofmetal Frank will be missed and I compared this to ATG's Slaughter of the Soul because I remember a couple of magazine's, such as Metal Maniacs, declaring Slaughter of the Soul as Death Metal album of the 90s when I thought differently.
Super Band! Effigy of The Forgotten helped to start Brutal DM, Tech Death and Slam. That's insane! This album started three musical styles! Frank Mullen's vocals are very influential as well. Furthermore, the aesthetics of the album covers (alien beasts, dystopian landscapes, cybernetic chaos mixed with demonic features etc) has been emulated by many, many bands... My favorite albums are Pierced, Despise, Effigy and Blood Oath. I love Suffo!
Im 36 now, and i remember going to the metal section and looking for the coolest cover on a good label and that's all I would need, i found opeth and countless others that way
Breeding The Spawn is the best well produced demo ever made. At least it got a mix for a DEMO style sound. Most demos don’t I believe and I appreciate the old mic recordings just because you get to hear the band raw. Breeding is their best I swear the production was good! A lot of production snobs out there, but as long as I can hear all of the instruments it’s golden. Try it again!
Necrotic Nick- It was rarely even a gamble if you bought something just because it said Roadrunner on it back then. There was a really good chance you'd find something amazing like Suffocation.
The first Suffocation I heard was Breeding the Spawn when it came out and I hated everything about it. I shit on Suffocation for most of the next decade, and everyone told me I was crazy. Not me, they were the crazy ones. Then I listened to Pierced from Within and it blew me away. I learned my lesson, now I don’t talk shit about stuff I don’t listen to. Breeding the Spawn has even started growing on me. 7. Breeding the Spawn 6. Human Waste 5. The Close of a Chapter 4. Souls to Deny 3. Effigy of the Forgotten 2. Despise the Sun 1. Pierced from Within
Necrotic Nick- I didn’t hear Breeding the Spawn till much later but by then I was a giant fan of Pierced From Within. There’s something I like about all their albums honestly.
Effigy Of The Forgotten is my favorite. I remember bringing the cd in to art class in high school and my teacher saw the booklet and was like lets hear it. I think he was into country and classic rock so he and the rest of the class were in for a hell of a surprise lol. He loved it and was actually headbanging to it. He really enjoyed it which was surprising. I always brought in cds to listen to after that like King Diamond, Deicide for the 2 Christian students, and tee hee...Regurgitate Carnivorous Erection lol. I was never looked at the same again. Ruptured Remains In A Doggybag and Parade Of The Decapitated Midgets.
Necrotic Nick- I never had a teacher that cool. lol. Regurgitate is amazing. I still need a copy of Carnivorous Erection though. I do have Parade of the Decapitated Midgets on a Relapse comp and I love that song.
Here's a question for you guys. Love all your videos but one thing I find very puzzling, so far in watching a bunch of your videos there's one band I've not seen mentioned once - Sinister. Cross The Styx, Diabolical Summoning, and Hate are all legit candidates for top 20 Death Metal albums of all time - thoughts on those? Maybe a discography ranking would be interesting for them because it gets pretty divisive after those 3 albums. I put Cross the Styx in my top 5 death metal albums so would be very interesting to see your opinions on the Sinister stuff.
Necrotic Nick- Actually, I'm a huge fan of Sinister I just never think to bring them up unfortunately. I'd 100% be down for a Sinister ranking in the future though.
@@thrallsofmetal Awesome. I know everyone always has that one band that they dig but for some reason never pops up in your head. For me that's Testament LOL
Great video of ranking all the suffocation albums.. I love all 90's Suffocation albums and EPs . Even the live in quebec album (2005).. Haven't listened much of their albums from last 15 years. Will start of with pinnacle and the self titled as recommended by you guys. Is there any plans on ranking immolation albums?
Necrotic Nick- Pinnacle is a great place to start for the more recent album by Suffocation. Immolation is definitely a possibility but I'm not sure if they're recording something new which is why we haven't put them in one of our polls yet.
Hey guys I watched your video pretty cool just wanted to give you a heads up Guy Marchais last name is pronounced mar-shay lol also I didn’t play on Reincremated but I was in the band writing catatonia with them before the demo. 👍🏻
Necrotic Nick- Holy shit! What's up, Guy! Sorry, we do tend to butcher pronunciations when in comes down to names. It's awesome to hear you're doing well and beat cancer. That is incredible news. Pierced winds it by a hair but I do have a more nostalgic connection with it outside of it being a killer album.
Holy shit! Guy! If it didn't come off in the video, I'm a giant fan! Thank you so much for all the wonderful contributions to metal! We're glad to hear you're cancer free! I try not to "fan-boy" out when bands comment, but seeing as Suffocation is one of my all- time favorites and this is my channel, I think I get a pass. Cheers, brother! 🤘
Together with Immolations Close to a world... and Meshuggahs Destroys Erase Improve, Pierce from within is my TOP 3 album, but I just can't understand that you guys rated Despise the sun so low! Yes, it's a short EP but the few original songs are great and the productions is heavy. Dave Culross is great. For some reason I never enjoyed Mike Smiths albums.
I just started going through Suffocations discography and you guys weren’t lying about the production on “Breeding the Spawn”. It’s horrible. And that sucks because I like a lot of the songs on there. Luckily most of the songs have been re-recorded on later albums. They really should have remastered that album.
Not sure about chris but doug Cerrito did 2nd guitar on hate eternals debut "conquering the throne" after PFW...then disappeared. Also Bohn has his own band now and yt channel covering a few suffo songs
Trump reference even though I love the dude, your fired 😂 great review got me to deep dive on the band. Been in my melodeath bands for so many years. Hard to break into the raw when the latter offers so much melody and diversity but suffocation and malevolent have really got me interested in old school death metal. Would love a discography ranking of MC no one on TH-cam has one!
gotta disagree with you guys on despise the sun. I LOVE that ep. Its a short concentrated blast of suffocation, the production is nice too. Its perfection, i would put it right up there with their best material.
3 years late - but wow that opinion on Despise the Sun is insane. Listen to it again!! Bloodchurn is the most vicious brutal song they ever recorded and the production is heavy as balls. Can't understand the hate
Necrotic Nick- Not saying it's terrible or anything but it doesn't hold a candle to a good chunk of their discography.
"Pierced From Within" is my favorite Suffocation album.
Necrotic Nick- It's one of the best 90's death metal albums ever for me.
Vote seconded. also my first taste of suffo period
Same!🤘
"Effigy of the Forgotten" was the best album.
I strongly agree people hype up pierced too much because it’s faster and the production EFFIGY will always be IT
I love "Effigy," but "Pierced" is far from overhyped.
Pierced is better IMO but not by much. They’re pretty much tied
@@SewNegative IMO, Pierced deserves the first place. That album Slammed
Pierced from Within is not only the best Suffo LP imo but also the most impressive Scott Burns mix.
Necrotic Nick- I agree 100% agree as far as Suffocation goes. I think the best Burns mix for me overall is Sepultura's Arise.
Doug Bohn is such an underrated drummer
Man it's so hard to pick. There are quite a few contenders - Pierced, Arise, Cause of Death, Once Upon The Cross, The Bleeding, etc. and I really dig the production on Retribution (Malevolent Creation) - it just might be my favorite by a hair.

It’s actually my favorite suffocation projevt
1. Effigy Of The Forgotten (absolute classic, the first 3 songs are untouchable)
2. Souls To Deny (really underrated)
3. Pierced From Within (awesome album but the rest of the album isn't as amazing as the first 2 songs)
4. Of The Dark Light (super underrated, the guest vocals by Kevin Muller don't bother me)
5. Suffocation
6. Pinnacle Of Bedlam
7. Blood Oath
8. Breeding The Spawn (the songs are great but the production is so bad, would rather listen to the re-recorded versions)
This is pretty much my comfort food Thralls vid! Whenever I’m doing anything & wanna listen to a a music ranking, I go to this vid 90/95% of the time!
Necrotic Nick- It was love at first chug when I heard that album. Thrones of Blood changed my musical perspective as to what it was to be brutal.
@@thrallsofmetal exactly, it shaped me into the musician I am today, I don't know where I would be without it!
I love Suffocation too and Pierced From Within is my favorite album by them ! Hell Yeah! Happy Metal New Year Thralls!
Necrotic Nick- Happy Metal New Year to you as well. Long live Suffocation!
Top 3 for me:
1. Pierced from Within
2. Effigy of the Forgotten
3. Songs From The Apocrypha (yes)
I really didn't get into this band until the last couple years.
Awesome video guys! Definitely agree with the top 2!! Effigy and Pierced changed my life as a young metalhead.
I've not really listened to Suffocation a lot and I've gone back and checked them out and I'm interested to check them out. Just like kind of how you all got me hooked on immolation, that last immolation album is a fucking master piece. Hails!
I'm re rewatching this after their new album just dropped and you guys just reviewed that one!!👍👍
Definatly my favourite band and close to being my favourite band.
Necrotic Nick- That’s a killer album as well. I think it’s more of the comeback that Souls to Deny should have been.
The thing I love most most about you guys is that I can see myself hanging out with you guys shooting the shit and nerding out on death metal or metal in general. Great content!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, we're just giant fanboys at heart and we love talking shop. If you ever see us at a show come up and say hi, man!
Doug Bohn didn't disappear. He did an album with a band called Iron Lung as well as a Pyrexia album. He actually was in Pyrexia when they toured with Suffo on the Pinnacle tour...
yeah but after his performance on Pierced you would have thought he would be everywhere
@@caljerm I don't know that's really what he wanted. I've talked to Doug a bunch of times over the years and he's kind of low key.
Doug B, and Dave C are my favorite drummers for suffo.
Malevolent Creation albums ranked, please!!
Breeding...was the only cassette I couldn't play.
Again solid video guys. Nick I'm almost there with your ranking with the exception of "Despise the sun" which I love to death. I almost died in a moshpit here in Athens Greece when they played Funeral Inception back in 07'.
New live album on pre-order from Nuclear Blast now! The Close of a Chapter live album was crushing!!!

I was just going through this list trying to figure out the best albums. Thanks for putting this out there.
I enjoy Despise The Sun more than Human Waste IMO. Also, Funeral Inception is a Live staple. Kind of surprised they didn't mention that.
My top 5 :
1. Blood Oath
2. Pierced From Within
3. ...Off The Dark Light
4. Effigy Of The Forgotten
5. Suffocation
Great channel. Love the informed and detailed opinions in your rankings. Suffocation is a band I haven't explored yet intend to rectify after this. Thanks!
Suffo have zero duds. Incredibly solid discography.
Necrotic Nick- Even their weaker offerings are still pretty solid.
1. Pierced from within
2. Of the dark light
3. Suffocation
4. Effigy of the forgotten
5. Pinnacle of Bedlam
6. Blood oath
7. Souls to deny
Supposed to be death metal guys bit says "thank god and thank the lord uhh
I liked everything up until despise the sun. Doug cerrito I still believe was the sound of suffocation. You can hear that cerrito sound on the first hate eternal album. After despise it was more misses than hits.
I love that Spiritual Healing is playing in the background.
Those blastbeats?we where wtf!?🤘
Been sampling alot to find breakdowns like that afterwards...
they are unquestionable OG's🤟
Use to be pierced but I like effigy better now because the guitars crunch a bit more and lower vocals.
Love suffocation!! Seeing them live is the best. Even got to go have beers with them in their dressing room!!
Appreciate the lineup change notation with each album.
Also Frank was lead vocals on every song on of the dark light. Kevin only did back ups on a couple tracks and Ricky was on none of it.
Fairly new to suffocation. I listened to the whole Pierce from within album and it is now my favorite mainly for its brutal breakdowns
But we all have different opinions and maybe that one is just too modern sounding for an old fart like me.;-)
Despise the Sun is amazing. Crushing. Tough as nails. The song writing in it is more refined & isn’t as chaotic as their other releases ,
Great reviews guys
Souls to deny is deff a solid album
1st time jamming Effigy and going holy shit!
22:59 In fact, Bohn was kicked out of the band in late 1995 to get replace by Culross who was the new drumming death metal hero back in that time.
What are you guys listening to in the background?
Great infos guys!
Great video! I never listened to them as much, so I found this video informative. Hopefully we get a Dismember ranking video. 😉🤘🤘
There were so many bassists in the live stream today!!! 🤘💀🤘
Necrotic Nick- It was the Pinnacle of Bass-lam. 😂
@@thrallsofmetal dude, that is funny as shit. And the Bassocation comment you had in the live stream
I know this video is a couple years old but are you guys ever going to tackle a Deicide ranking?
So goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood great band, great reviews and ranking, STAY BRUTAL
This was awesome, thanks guys! I agree with most of the opinions here, except for Souls to Deny. That album starts with my all time favorite song of theirs, "Deceit", and the rest of the album is just so fkn chunky! As Joe Biden would say, "Caman man!"
My ranking:
1. Souls to Deny
2. Pierced From Within
3. Suffocation
4. Effigy of the Forgotten
5. Pinnacle of Bedlam
6. Breeding the Spawn
7. Of the Dark Light
8. Blood Oath
9. Human Waste
10. Despise the Sun
Deicide next!!! 🤞
Necrotic Nick- I still dig it but it doesn't hold up to the ones I had before it in my opinion. The title track is a favorite of mine though as well as Surgery of Impalement and Subconsciously Enslaved.
And my favorite Suffocation albums are effigy and pierced it’s a tossup between the two my next favorite is the newest one of the dark light
Scott Burns definitely added the burn to Suffocation's earlier discography 😉🔥
8. Souls to Deny
7. Of the Dark Light
6. Blood Oath
5. Suffocation
4. Pinnacle of Bedlam
3. Breeding the Spawn
2. Effigy of the Forgotten
1. Pierced From Within
Souls to Deny behind all of their most recent shit?
@@willburhans3018souls is a masterpiece but suffocation also is
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315 yeah, I think Souls is just extremely underrated.
I really like your channel.
Great work guys. Effigy, naturally.
Necrotic Nick- Effigy was close to being my number one, but Pierced edged it out as by just a bit.
Great video. Would love to see you guys do an Obituary or Exodus ranking! Thanks for the content 🤘
Necrotic Nick- Both have new albums due out this year so probably after that we'll throw them in a poll. Glad you dig the content, man! Thanks again!
Spot on you could pretty much by album late 80s early 90s based on the record label roadrunner or earache and would 9 times out of 10 be killer
7. Breeding the Spawn
6. Human Waste
5. The Close of a Chapter
4. Souls to Deny
3. Effigy of the Forgotten
2. Despise the Sun
1. Pierced from Within
Necrotic Nick- I didn’t hear Breeding the Spawn till much later but by then I was a giant fan of Pierced From Within. There’s something I like about all their albums honestly.
Arguably the invention of Slam Brutal Death Metal begins with Suffocation
Dope video. Souls to deny is a damn solid album
@@thrallsofmetal Another disturbing 1 for class i just remembered was Libido Airbag's intro to Hepatitis Appetizer from the Miss Melanoma ep lol.
Great show....I will say, however, Despise The Sun is fookin' sensational
Also. What do you guys think of skinless. Never really heard ya speak of them? They have a decent catalogue. :).
Necrotic Nick- I own all their album and I think they're underrate as fuck. Killer band.
Skinless ranking would be dope! Progression Towards Evil is my favorite bdm of all time. Stupid consistent band
Lol I used to buy everything from Roadrunner Records too. I miss going to the Record Store and buying a cd because the artwork was cool.
We all need a Cynic ranking - maybe when the new album comes out (I think there is one recorded)
When and if that happens, we'll all take a shot together on camera for Sean Malone and Sean Reinhert.
@@jamminjon8074 definitely - I will join you from London - salut
Together with Immolations Close to a world... and Meshuggahs Destroys Erase Improve, Pierce from within is my TOP 3 album, but I just can't understand that you guys rated Despise the sun so low! Yes, it's a short EP but the few original songs are great and the productions is heavy. Dave Culross is great. For some reason I never enjoyed Mike Smiths albums.
Damn! I was waiting for that!
Good list, guys!
For me Blod Oath is at the top!!
I just started going through Suffocations discography and you guys weren’t lying about the production on “Breeding the Spawn”. It’s horrible. And that sucks because I like a lot of the songs on there. Luckily most of the songs have been re-recorded on later albums. They really should have remastered that album.
I hope they gather all the remaster Breeding the spawn stuff in an individual album!
"Effigy of the Forgotten" is #1 for me.
Ah Jaysis lads, am I the only one who thinks Blood Oath is not just way better than Of The Dark Light but it's in me top five!
Pierced from Within is my favourite. Despise the Sun is underrated.
gotta disagree with you guys on despise the sun. I LOVE that ep. Its a short concentrated blast of suffocation, the production is nice too. Its perfection, i would put it right up there with their best material.
