The man made 38 million in the NBA and 20 million overseas untaxed and untouched. Yeah he won. I watched those hawks he played on he could’ve became and all star at some point, he was ahead of his time he should’ve been playing today. He’d be worth 4 for 125 mill
He always took risk and I respected that...He was a McDonald's All America and decided to go to Stanford. I remember Dick Vitale mentioned during the McDonald's game that Josh was basically crazy for going to Stanford over other top schools. Now Josh using that Stanford education and transforming parts of California as a real estate developer.
Josh Childress was one of the first NBA players I've seen willingly leave the league to go play overseas at such a young age. It's commonplace now but as a 15 year old at the time I couldn't understand it but I respected his decision to do what was best for him.
@@TTJJCC I understand your point, but I'd argue that there's no such thing as a truly 'secure spot' in the NBA unless you have a max deal. Even then, teams can still make changes. With that in mind, I think it's more common than you think for players to consider overseas options, especially if they're not getting the playing time or opportunities they want in the NBA.
@@ohsosaucy1093 I see what you're saying. By a "secure spot," I mean someone that has a multi year contract and a spot in the rotation. Now, a fringe player on a one year small money deal? Those players are more likely to consider overseas deals.
A great player and great character, Childress is remembered fondly by Olympiacos fans. His main drawback was the inconsistent three point shot, and he was criticized for it, even in Europe. He had spectacular athleticism, a great defender that could guard almost all positions, and overall contributed in many aspects of the game.
Josh Childress really was eating and got lucky becouse of crazy olympiacos owner....dude got offer from olympiacos 3 year 20 million dollars free taxes, free house,in amazing city Athens....in NBA standarts his Olympiacos salary was about 15 millions dollars a year....(in NBA players pays taxes)
Yeah, everyone was puzzled about the move on the time, but it was undoubtedly the right move. It's the equivalent of over $45 million USD. Josh wasn't gonna be getting $15 mil a year in the league back then...especially when the rookie max was only around that figure (considering the taxes). He also had an NBA out after each year, so if the market/league wanted him to come back, he could go back. Hawks offered him 5 years for 33 million (basically 16 million post taxes). Olympiacos basically gave him 3 years for 45 million if you factor in taxes. I actually remember the contract dispute from that summer.
@@Ninety2boss You're missing what I'm saying. 3 years 20 overseas is 3 years 20 cash take home pay. In NBA, at 52.6 percent tax rate (once you hit THAT HIGH OF tax bracket).... in order to actually take home 20 million cash, you have to make around 45 million.
@@Ninety2boss Oh I feel you. The max pension in NBA is after 10 years of service. Josh has 8 years of service. He's two years short of the max pension (which is $215k a year...which is then taxed). He's probably getting 160k or so with 8 years of service (which can't be taken out til 62 years old or so anyways.) The balance of those two years he played in Greece wouldn't make up for 20 million in liquid cash IN HAND that one can invest, accrue interested on, or do whatever you want with. The 20 million cash he received is going to go much farther than 45-50k extra annually once you hit 62. Trust me, my brother works in the NBA, so I know all about the pension system.
I am from Greece so I remember him coming over - playing here is not so bad. Quite the opposite, its actually amazing. the Fans are amazing and EuroLeague has very good traditional teams. The salaries are less, but they still amount to millions. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Partizan, Red Star, Milano, Bologna, CSKA Moscow, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Bayern. We have great teams in Europe.
Great vid. That was shocking when he went to Greece. I couldn't remember other young NBA players going overseas before that besides Danny Ferry (because he didn't want to play for the Clippers) and Bryon Shaw way back when.
Dominique Wilkins was past his prime when he went to Europe, but he was just one season removed from a 29ppg season, and had a couple of 19ppg seasons where he was a 6th man of the year contender. Even at that advanced age and with injuries, he offered teams more than Childress ever did. It was pretty notable, a decade before Childress.
Ngl bro I thought you had been did a feature on him. I always wanted to know what happened to him. He was the first dude I think I seen do a 360 in the league when I was younger
Yoooo you know that's funny about that, I told him that yearssssssss ago when I met him 6 years ago, I was talking to him about the laundry mat he once owned..
Do one for Patrick McCaw, drafted by GS in 2016 2nd round and Jerry West said teams will be sorry they didn’t take him. Been out the league since 2021.
McCaw is the definition of drafted into the right team and leaving for another at the right time. 3 NBA championships in such a short time on two different teams as a role player is pretty rare. 😅
Josh Childress smart man 4going 2 Europe 2 get the bag i wish it wouldve worked out 4 him in the League but its all good cause he still had fruitful carreer
Not a terrible move. He had already made great money in the NBA. So it was a tremendous opportunity financially. And at the same time RETURNED to the NBA and made even more money. So I would say a successful career. Maybe not stat wise but definitely financially. Fact is he's still living off the overseas money. So....🤷🏿
I think he made the smart decision overall... Just listening to Gilbert arenas talk now I can understand what he means by the contracts being very suspicious when you're making agreements to it... At the end of the day he played in the NBA and made a lot of security for his family
I think he was just a bad fit with the Suns… in the right situation, he could’ve had a role similar to Derozen; versatile scorer but not necessarily a 3 point shooter
DeJuan Summer played in the pro league in my country Dominican Republic this year and was trash, I could’ve saw why he didn’t make it far in the league and struggled overseas too
During the time he did no wrong. The league wasn't paying like that. Unless you were Kobe and some other super stars. And he was already coming off the bench. He probably seen it as a waste. If you get paid 20 million, house, car, and you get to start🤔no brainer. After 3 years you would never need to touch a court again. No stunted growth here..
Not playing his whole career in the NBA isn't really a waste of talent. He did play D1, then NBA and Euroleague professionally earning more than most will make in their lifetime. Most every hooper would accept that if they could
Will still be remembered as a pioneer, and business wise made a great move for the time.
