Why is it only recently I've heard about this? This should've been in the U.S. military affirmative action programs since the 60's. I know Truman was racist, but was forced to integrate the military, not much unlike Lincoln was forced to assimilate over 20O,000 Black Troops in Civil War. No wonder we can trace red lining to the '30's FHA!

Half of the people that have such a problem with Critical Race Theory don't know exactly what it is. The teaching of Afrikan history and culture have been deemed as CRT. Everything that has something to do with our people got that negative CRT tag. I taught about "Drown towns " here in the United States also "Sundown towns " and they want to label that Critical Race Theory as well.
Exactly. History is not a "theory." Even Crenshaw conflates the two in this interview. This is dangerous political posturing when Texas textbooks refer to slavery as "forced immigration." CRT needs to be dropped. Teaching REAL American History MUST stay.
In regard to segregated neighborhoods, government and banks demanded that neighborhoods must be for whites only or at least not allow blacks, if they were to get government backed loans. This "redlining" didn't stop until JFK's executive order in the 1960's. Southern politicians made sure Social Security and minimum wage laws excluded blacks by targeting domestic and service workers. Blacks were overrepresented as maids and waitstaff.
In order for America to repent at its core, it must over stand the nature of its crime against Black people and all of the negative consequences from racism Black people today suffer with. CRT is the effort to present the evidence of a crime against Black people in America and the need for reparations so that true repentance is demonstrated by America.
Almost as much as the black community loses it when they hear the truth of the 1% trying to infiltrate and control black activism with things like Boujee Lives Matter so they can buy mansions and leave the poor victim families out in the cold

Amy, It again amazes me how people say they want to "change the discussion" when it comes to ethnic studies, yet they use the same verbiage that people critiquing it use. We have to be smarter than that. We have to use verbiage that benefits our side instead of supporting theirs. When others label something and you use their label, they win debate. It seems some of us are too slow to understand this prescient point. By allowing the term "race" in discussion, we support white supremacist talking points that there are different races instead of one human race with multiple ethnicities. When we allow the term "theory" to be involved we again lose due to fact that our reality as oppressed peoples in this country COULD be debated, instead of factual points. The lefts archaic antiquated approach to this will ultimately leave us yearning due to the fact we couldn't think beyond the parameters others place upon our analysis of true amerikkkan history. Thanks for giving this time, should give it a bit more.
Honestly, most people on the left have no idea how to properly use language - it's maddening... it's difficult to change the way we speak about these things, but it's essential! We need to learn how to speak on these issues without reinforcing the negative framework of the extremists, you're right. There is absolutely only one race.

Per Elizabeth Baylor, medical anthropologist, University of Alabama: Ethnocentrism is a term applied to the cultural or ethnic bias-whether conscious or unconscious-in which an individual views the world from the perspective of his or her own group, establishing the in-group as archetypal and rating all other groups with reference to this ideal. This form of tunnel vision often results in: (1) an inability to adequately understand cultures that are different from one’s own and (2) value judgments that preference the in-group and assert its inherent superiority, thus linking the concept of ethnocentrism to multiple forms of chauvinism and prejudice, including nationalism, tribalism, racism, and even sexism and disability discrimination. Ethnocentrism is a concept that was coined within anthropology and formed the cornerstone of its early evolutionary theory before becoming one of the discipline’s primary social critiques. It continues to both challenge and inspire anthropologists, shifting in meaning and application with theoretical trends and across the subdisciplines. For many anthropologists in the Boasian tradition, ethnocentrism is the antithesis of anthropology, a mind-set that it actively counters through cultural relativism, education, and applied activities such as cultural brokering. Physical anthropologists have tended to define the concept more generally as preferential cooperation with a defined in-group and to interrogate its potential evolutionary origins, while the postmodern trend has been a growing suspicion of the anthropologist’s own ability to transcend cultural bias in his or her analysis and presentation of the “other,” leading to an emphasis on reflexivity and subjective diversity. Outside of the discipline, ethnocentrism is a topic of study for biologists, political scientists, communication experts, psychologists, and sociologists, particularly in the areas of politics, identity, and conflict. Marketing has seized on the term to describe consumers who prefer domestically produced goods, and the derivative ethnocentric has become a common criticism in the era of globalization for those assuming their own cultural superiority.
There's one major detail you're forgetting; there is a strong filter between thought and deed. For example, just because I'm heterosexual doesn't mean I'm going to hit on every attractive woman I see walking down the street. Knee-jerk reactions or thoughts have no where near the weight or impact you suggest. In any case, if you truely are concerned about such "snap" perceptions, CRT is bound to only make things worse in that regard, as it's encouraging people to resent people on a wide racial spectrum rather than a personal one.
We are always helping white folks with their many issues, simply by trying to organize ourselves to protect ourselves against them! And that is an ongoing never ending battle. No other group of people has to struggle the way we do in this world and despite all the opposition we face, the racist attacks against our being, the direct assaults against our humanity, we go out of our way, foolishly I must add to continue to do so, to include the very people who make our lives hell here on earth, a part of what we truly deserve, which they work their damndest to deny us! We have to wake up, because we really have no choice, and start to truly think about ourselves "first and foremost" without the fear of retaliation because we are receiving that already while trying to include everyone else in what we should have, if anyone should! Our mistake is not having a collective mindset of us us us us us us us first! Until we do that, we never will be! And there is nothing at all wrong with us living, thinking and being that way! Everyone else does! We are the only ones who don't and suffer for it! The Most High called us out of all people to be His special possession! Why can't we simply trust and follow His lead concerning ourselves? There is no sin in that but stupidity rests in doing anything less! And by now, we should know that better than anyone!
That was the most amazing documentary I have ever seen. I thought this is something that will NEVER be shown in schools. This is the kind of information they never want their precious little children to know about.
@Democracy Now I really appreciate the stories that you guys cover and what you are working hard to unpack. Your production is consistent. With all the clamor coming from politicians about critical race theory and the way leftist liberal media outlets cover it, in addition to how right wing support media outlets' coverage, I could never gain a clear understanding of what critical race theory actual is. It has been explained clearly. Much appreciated.
Kevin, it should not be hard to take racism seriously in this county or in this world if you have eyes and ears. Your oversimplification of racism is dismissive and disrespectful!!!

Crenshaw is a hero and DN!'s coverage is, as always, a breath of fresh air. CRT that DOES include teaching kids how to engage in critical dialectical materialist analysis and Frierian dialogic methodology - yes, that comes from a Marxist tradition - NEEDS to be part of public schooling even in elementary levels if we are serious about public schooling serving democratic ends. It should be made clear, however, that although public schools are doing amazing things, most teachers and school leaders, who do tend to vote for Democrats and have vague beliefs in "equality," love, peace, and hugs, are pretty anti-intellectual and are mostly committed to teaching kids to adapt to or "succeed" within the system as it stands. More importantly, most of them are relatively privileged white folks who have zero interest in teaching kids how to understand and critically analyze oppression and oppressive institutional practice, etc. Most teachers have no idea and have zero interest in learning about what CRT, much less any Marxist critical analysis, really is - much less how to begin to teach it to kids for the sake of their own liberation and intellectual self-defense as members of the working class. In short, even public schools, despite the hysteria of the right, are actually very conservative institutions and much work needs to be done. Hopefully it can get done before corporate interests and the right destroy and privatize the public school system.
Hey. Could you add some commentary how this approach you mention ensures human progress. I know you will say that it is supposed to be inclusive by being exclusive but hopefully you are an intellect who can help us understand how we are all wrong.
@@willcurley3607 what are you saying? If we reform schools to teach critical thinking and dialectical materialism how does that ensure human progress, is that what you are saying?
@@guapochico69 well I think your question is too basic because I was being a smart ass, yes that was my comment. But the more nuanced reading was that Ms Crenshaw is not advocating any of what the writer mentioned but actually was opposing what the writer was suggesting. In addition, to suggest the world has moved to a situation that should be focused on this issue as a basis is to ignore the 5 billion of seven billion who cannot afford the luxury. So the larger issue is much more complex and nuanced then the BS BEING ESPOSED AS A SOLUTION. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are trying to ensure they are fed and can live. Solutions are not found thought CrT but technology. While also ensuring we have honest conversations and start to demand we are equal. Academic subjects are as nuanced as individuals themselves. Exploring any realm of thought does not mean you embrace the inherent ideology of said thinking. It's called learning. That said the fact that we are grouped by race and whatever else is not helping. We are individuals first, saying that an entire race are gangsters or klansmen is counterproductive and ignorant. Calling everyone a racist, Nazi, socialist, or a thug is just flawed thinking and sadly this consumes MSM including DN.
Do you know that there were many white people that fought and died to save or to free the slaves? Why when you "think" to the CRT you imagine klansmen, racist or nazi? @@ivandafoe5451 It's not about submitting, it's about forming a proper counter attack. Polar bear hunting, beat down on subways, a grandmother's arm severed in a car jacking, an old man beaten to death with traffic cones.. Critical race realism is in our face every day. Maybe the uncontrollable crime is the problem.
But skin color does matter. It is not "socially constructed." For example: vitamin D is absorbed through the skin (the largest organ in the human body). Over 70% of black Americans are deficient in vitamin D. In a recent study, it was found that approximately 29% of Black pregnant women and 5% of white pregnant women residing in the northeastern United States had a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common among adverse birth outcomes i.e. maternal mortality. It is linked to violence/poor mental health/obesity/diabetes/immune disorders etc... What child in Chicago plays freely outside? It was also a known co-morbid factor in COVID deaths, which disproportionately killed black Americans (Africans didn't die at the same rates). This could explain many disparities. These things cannot be swept under the "white supremacist" rug. If we are not concentrating on these environmental/biological/health differences due to fear of being called racist, people will die. Social theory is not science. You are dealing with black lives by influencing public policy, which includes healthcare. You have no business influencing institutions you are not trained to influence based on superficial knowledge gained by attributing "a secret evil motive" to statistics. Sometimes the answer is skin deep. Focus on history, not theory. Please.
CRT obviates the need for any thought, word or act of racism as proof of their presumed verdict. All they need is their preferred race measuring less favorably than another. Regardless of the cause: they declare their favored race to be victims of the other. Then they would use real government enforced discrimination in response to their presumed discrimination; altering laws, policies and practices to favor their preferred race. All for the stated purpose of forcibly making the measurements between races identical. The operative question is whether you support using government force to implement racial discrimination. All the rest is academic. My answer is no.
yes!!! If the government wont let us share the knowledge, then we must dig in.. we can do it, it is getting really hard, to even keep ideas alive, but we can keep our education and shared wisdom going... power to the people... hope for a better world....

African history is American HISTORY. Most of you aren't even aware of how African/Africans began civilization. You NEED to learn CRT so you're enlightened to how and why everything is playing out currently/historically. TOO many of you are so judgmental of how others not in your community behaves but aren't interested in why. Why, because a good majority of YOU don't feel that it benefits you which is basically the history of American Caucasoids...Not interested in anything not beneficial to them personally or collectively as a group. That is indeed pitiful, any way one spins it. My ancestors built this entire nation for the white unwarranted privileges you enjoy although most of you are simply ungrateful.
As far as I can remember, from all of my US history, and Ap history. I learned most of what I needed to know about the injustice of the African race. I remember learning of the triangle trade route; the conditions slaves were in. The colonization of many of the Caribbean islands. The injustice that many suffered under the south’s control. The 3/5ths clause. The civil war. Jim Crowe. Separate but equal. The civil rights movement. What more do you want to teach? Do you need to be explicit and in detail with every injustice and human rights violation to get your point across? To the point I’m in tears and begging my fellow brother for reparations? I remember very clearly the brothers in my same history class not giving a damn either. It didn’t “benefit them” you can only teach the people who are willing to learn. I 100% agree with you that this OUR history, but it will always fall on deaf ears if the pain our ancestors had to suffer are forced on others.

Critical Race Theory: "God dammit, HONOR ME BY SEGREGATING ME IN EQUALITY WITH YOUR OWN SEGRATION" Can't we all just be happily segregated side by side??? !
Critical Race Theory, contrary to popular opinion, has absolutely nothing to do with historical events of racial injustice be perpetrated. this lady went to a law school, literally THE ONLY places critical race theory is taught as it's a course study tool invented by the ex-tenured a Harvard School of Law Professor who died in 2011.
That’s what you talk about in Law school you don’t talk about how to fix these problems or have a platform on how to combat it? I’ve not been to Law school but I thought this was just dinner discussions at the table growing up. You need a whole Law Degree to understand what Critical Race Theory is?
Part of discussing this history and the problems it created in law school is that they will be actively working in the systems created by the legacy of Jim Crow, Redlining and the like and need to know how to help clients fight back against these inequalities from within. It's specifically meant to train lawyers, law enforcement professionals (almost entirely federal) and judges who will help undo racist aspects of the system where they can. It can also bring more context to communities they may not have much experience with. A lot of black professionals come from the suburbs and can carry harmful stereotypes formed by the country's racist past when working with black people from the cities and countryside.
This is great in discussing something that needs to be discussed, because Whites are generally unaware of current institutionalized racism. However, your characterization of the Right's grievances with it are misplaced and biased. Their concern is you labelling little children as perpetrators or victims. Most parents Black and White agree on this. I fail to see how that has any relation to the so‐called attack on the capitol. You remind me of the Black talk show host who berated a young Black caller for supporting Obama instead of Hillary. The talk show host went on and on about how racist this country still is, how he gives his son "the talk" and how America will never elect a Black man. I should remind you that many Trump supporters also voted for Obama.
@Rhodamarie Because EQUITY is this book's foundation; not EQUALITY. Equity is a newer push by humankind's enemy to further division. If people would get the hell out of 1960's mentality and realize we are a HUMAN RACE, not divided by skin color, we might have a chance at fighting off the elite transhuman agenda. But no: you all want to take a huge step back and re-imagine our history from a CRT perspective. It's regressive af, and doesn't help humankind in the least. You realize history was written by victors, correct? How come we never hear about the great reset of the 1800s, nor anything about orphan trains which included children of every skin color. Why don't we ever hear/learn about hate towards Irish Americans or the plight of white folk fleeing European Royal oppression? I am a fan of CRT. I believe it gives a perspective of how we should think about the building of our world. It doesn’t mean I believe it is the exclusive viewpoint. I also do not believe in grifters taking advantage of an important topic. On both sides. This subject should be discussed at an elevated point. Base level and then move forward. With multiple opinions and Sides. The fact that ma Crenshaw decides it should be THE lens is not something that holds water. Anymore then the opposite opinion should be accepted. Let’s understand what we think should be done without demanding a lens. Because this issue has been conducted in ways that are wrong. So perhaps ms Crenshaw should review that issue as well as why it is being refuted. Because I am not sold that this issue has been agreed by people before it has been introduced honestly. Rid the grifters, find the base and let’s go.
I might be just a mom and a nana, but most of all, I'm a human. I have 8 widely mixed grandchildren. I never teach them the result of a story defining it by color of skin, cause we're human. I explained to my grandkids, that officer went way overboard with that man, the man's crime was a fake $20 bill, he tried to pass on to a store clerk, police were called and the police used their authority in a vicious way. I will never teach my grandkids he was killed cause he was black. I am pure white, I will die for my kids if a choice had to be made. It's imperative they all live by the morals of human. Maybe that's what children need to learn. No difference!!!
You heart may be in the right place, but your head isn't...teaching children that there is NO difference (which is ideally true), when many people that they encounter will SEE a difference (which is the unfortunate reality), is setting them up for disappointment at best and death at worst.

The beauty of using the history of previous generations to villify an entire demographic: it can never be changed. It will remain available any time you need to. No matter how much you punish your target demographic; the history will remain unchanged and they will be no less villified. Fascists have used this for generations.
An entire demographic? You're talking about white people, right? That's not a "demographic." It's an imaginary social construct that has always had more to do with power and exploitation than any real culture or traditions. White people need to take responsibility for learning their own histories. Chances are that most "white people" had grandparents and great grandparents who had a much healthier sense of their actual cultural identity - not to mention a better sense of their working class status that at least temporarily put them in the same economic boat with brown and black folks at least until they were able to secure the white privileges of "Homestead" government-secured free land, redlined home loans, GI bill benefits, extra security from police, networked job opportunities despite others being more qualified, legacy college admissions and scholarships even for average or below average students, etc.etc. That's historical fact - not some twisted version of fascist ideology. That shit began even before the first U.S. congress declared you had to be a "free white man" to even be a citizen - look it up.

Amy,
It again amazes me how people say they want to "change the discussion" when it comes to ethnic studies, yet they use the same verbiage that people critiquing it use.

Please.
Do you really think that victimhood and villiany are hereditary traits?
Schools don't want the real truth about what happen to Blacks in time past. But they can teach their W R S T.

Ask your question man!
My dear friend said that he's still a much better swimmer. I don't know what he meant by that but he's a good guy.
I recommend the book, "Critical Race Judgments" by Capers, Carbado, Lenhardt, and Onwuachi-Wilig.
No thanks.
Nope, this book wants to beat a dead horse by revisiting Jim Crow, Roe, et al. Did you know that Norma McCorvey LIED, only to later become pro-life? She was USED as a pawn to bring in billions of dollars worth of human fetal tissue to world elite pockets; as well as creating the worst mass kill-industry to fund bio crimes against humanity. Hell, you all can't even define a woman anymore. Your programming worked, and you will hold on to baseless values that widen the divide. It's all an agenda. And you ate it up out of pure, baseless guilt.
Thank you, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Amy, Juan and DN! crew.
DN concealed the fact that Trayvon Martin was in the US Airforce and his parents were professionals. Misrepresenting facts for people too lazy to find credible sources and so are incapable of understanding their fate is their business.
Not saying quiet parts quietly!
Cheap plastic glasses, no new info just old debunked myths. No wonder the conversation goes nowhere.
Yeah, the glasses don't work
I draw a line in the sand and throw the gauntlet at the feet of tyranny, and I say CRT now, CRT tomorrow, CRT FOREVER !
If you are going to go around throwing gauntlets, you should have more than a theory
Wallace Loved Segregation also.
@@jesmonnawicks6227 Fighting segregation is more than throwing gauntlets around
It is really the inferior race theory or that one race is the superior race.
Inferior? You mean the beings who can't withstand the sun? Or rape, pillage and steal others resources and every invention known to mankind and attribute it to themselves? And literally stays up day and night, organizing think tanks devising millions of ways to oppress, suppress and depress a whole group of people who did nothing to them? Inferior people with weak genetics, infested with disease and have tails? Are you SURE you wanna go that 'inferior' route..🤔
@@moosieh1 ,i agree with you and i am certainly not trying to go that route .I think that those that are against Critical Race Theory being taught in the public schools are trying to cover up the horror and the wickedness that was and has happened and the part that races believing that they are superior played in it.
Some of them are just pointing out that education shouldn't be ideology-based (some are also religious hypocrites).
they all are hypocrites
Teaching the current false view of history is history that is "ideology-based".
Great program. Thanks. I’m over 60 and I am so weary of trying to be patient and educate people who don’t have an open mind. CRT SUMMERSCHOOL IS wonderful
No wonder they don't want it taught.
Class
🐑Our Heavenly Father blessed me with 12 stars upon my head and of copperskin , crt is those who have color blind issues and in the lambs Book of life.
A theory that says slaves in America were "indentured servants" and that slavery was multi racial.
Oh God. So much BS on this show these days!
Are Asians CRT's kryptonite?

Sounds like vacation bible school.
Good citizenship initiative...That's the way out against Black vote malign legal suppression, and against white supremacists...a true social anachronism that has to be fought against.
“Wear a mask!”
Love it.❤️
Good luck with that

Great Conversation
Ms Crenshaw. Fat fingers on my part.
They don't want your voice
@@BobJohnson648 seems wrong to say that. But whatever.
@@willcurley3607 you quite rightly pointed out that some people want to hijack the race relations train
I might be just a mom and a nana, but most of all, I'm a human. I have 8 widely mixed grandchildren. I never teach them the result of a story defining it by color of skin, cause we're human. Nor beliefs in different religions, cause there's one God. As she brought up George Floyd, I didn't see a color in that horrible act.
More race baiting BS
Project harder racist
That’s what conservatives do
Did you know that WWII Black veterans and descendants are STILL not allowed GI bill benefits? Can you imagine teaching WWII and GI Bill and not mentioning that 1 million Black veteran were excluded. There is a bill in the house and senate to change this. Authentic CRT seeks to uncover and remedy these inequities caused by systemic racism.
If you're triggered, maybe you should reevaluated why Education from a non-White Supremacist perspective makes you so upset.
Your heart is full of hate. Hate is the enemy not your fellow Americans who fought side by side to protect this country from foreign radicals like Nazis in World War 2 and recently against Bin Laden.
The beauty of using the history of previous generations to villify an entire demographic: it can never be changed. It will remain available any time you need to. No matter how much you punish your target demographic; the history will remain unchanged and they will be no less villified.
Fascists have used this for generations.
It’s working against them. Brandon has like 15% Latino support. That’s why they don’t want Puerto Rico in the Union.
You strawman. I decide what I say; not you.
The operative question is:
Do you support using government force to implement racial discrimination?
All the rest is academic.
@@michaelpcoffee In the same way that we use "government force" to enforce the law - assuming law is legitimate because its about justice and not "racial discrimination." Figuring out ways, even if it's complex, to repair damage that was done in the past is an essential part of justice. Not just throwing your hands up and saying "it can never be changed." Do we refuse to prosecute murderers due to the fact that the murder happened in the past and can "never be changed?" Reparations is not "racial discrimination."
@@kevin6293 "them" huh. Where'd you get your data?? My data shows that Latinos are far to the political left on almost every issue - especially economic policy - of the average white person in their politics one way or another. And that's saying something because most white people are pretty socialist in their actual policy beliefs. The majority support Medicare for all, expanding Social Security, increasing funding for Public Schools, better funded and more accountable public police forces, equal LGBTQ rights, immigrant rights, raising taxes on the rich, women's equality including equal pay and full abortion rights, etc. etc.
