- Kimberlé Crenshaw - the scholar who gave us ‘intersectionality’ - discusses the recent decision by the College Board to water down its AP African American studies coursework following attacks by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. She argues that the College Board's watering down of African American studies is actually proof of critical race theory in action. "Contemporary aspects of the past that continue to shape the life chances of African Americans cannot be taught if they hurt some feelings or they make people feel bad,” she says. Censoring information that challenges the mythical retelling of the past is a hallmark of authoritarian-leaning regimes.

Look at it this way. If you are a democrat and vote for the democratic party, then what is happening in Florida is exactly what you get and deserve. This is not new. These is a reason Howard Zen wrote a history book. I grew up in the 60's and I would not never trust the "documented history" of our school system. Remember the ruckus caused by "Bury by heart at wounded knee" The book was taken from the stenographer notes all military officers had at the time.
We need to teach Sociology in high school. That is where peoples minds open in college. It leaves a space for explaining modern day consequences. What we dont learn from we repeat.
Sociology, and its political adjunct, civics. Both are missing from recent curriculum. I am so grateful that I am older, and from a state that (formerly) taught both. They indeed intersect.

When I was taught about Slavery in 4th grade, I never internalized the idea that I was a racist. It is part of our history and we should not forget ever. I feel so sorry to all the kids being raised in these states.
Exactly, I realized how terrible it was and that my ancestors who owned slaves made me sad, but I understood that it was my job to keep it from happening again. It was never my fault that they made these mistakes.

Exactly, as well! I now understand that ideas such as CRT, take the focus away from individual racism, and puts the emphasis on laws and other systems in place. Even such things as IQ tests, that claim to have no cultural bias, actually have them. And other things are influenced by wealth, such having a school with state of the art computer systems, or a planetarium, as examples. So having college admissions base solely on test scores, could actually be discriminatory. Also in colleges where there is diversity, it can add to widening views in discussions. yet the the right makes the issue about discrimination against white, instead.
Claiming that learning about actual historical events will harm sensitive children, is a lie, in my view. And even if some child got confused, then the parent could actually interact with thier own child, in order to help them out. This fact has been entirely left out of the discussion.
One additional thing: Black History Month was founded in large parts, because, 100 years ago serious white academics claimed that black people inferior beings, who contributed nothing to history. Look up the history of the Eugenics Movement, from that time period. Those ideas were also central to Adolph Hitler in his book, "Mein Kampf", which was written in that period.

When I was grade school the only significant African American figure who we learned about about was George Washington Carver. It was not until I went to a Junior College that I was able to learn more about "Black History" and the African-American contribution to our culture. It made me appreciate the people's struggle.

That reality is learning to live with one another after a long history of racism and prejudice on many different levels and in many different areas of life throughout this country's history. Understanding that history is important to both overcoming our present problems and not repeating our historical ones. All of DeSantis's public acts over his governorship with regards to race show that he wants us to go backwards with regards to race relations. He will not be the last politician with serious power to want that.

@mericanmodi8479 Um... your mincing words and splitting hairs. Racism is as old of a concept as it comes. It is an offshoot of fear of the unknown. It was here against the Native Americans and as soon as we Anglo Saxons jumped off our boats. Good Lord, it is in the Bible. The Old Testament. It is part of the human condition. And, it exists everywhere, to some degree. Still, it is a problem, mixed up as we are with one another reacting to our various shared histories, that has become "a pot capable of boiling over". We own that reality... the problems we face right now, right here. The question is how we are going to change that reality for our children. By hiding from those problems? By characterizing them or their effect on our society incorrectly? Or by facing our differences and finding solutions and compromises that bring us closer together.

Excellent interview! As a former student in Florida, I am proud I grew up in a place where I could learn about these things. The only suggestion I can give out of state students is that they start looking at their college education as a commodity that they buy and CHOOSE not to attend colleges that refuse to teach these subjects. Money talks. The sticking point, of course, is that Florida students, themselves, will still get the shaft since their education is so much cheaper attending schools in state.
Did you learn African Kings sold their own people into slavery and are still doing it today? Did you learn Hillary and Obama killed Gaddafi in Libya and helped set up African Slave Markets? Did you learn there were many free blacks before the Civil War that owned slaves? You should read (D) Daniel Patrick Moyniha's paper from 1965 on the destruction of the black family by the federal government. Until the black family unit is returned, blacks can never move forward. I'm always amazed how democrats put teacher's unions before allowing black students school choice. That's the real racism. Blacks are often stuck in failing schools.

Also, the real tragedy is that poorly funded primarily black schools are usually found to serve poorly funded primarily black districts... which are all planned out ahead of time by our politicians.
@ShannonDavisSings As a former teacher, you are well aware of how the teachers unions don't care about students. They are against school vouchers, Charter Schools, and School Choice. The money should follow the student, that way, every student would be able to get a good education. Teachers unions protect incompetent teachers from being fired. The teachers union colluded with CDC to keep Schools closed, causing students to suffer from learning at a rate of 35%. The Chicago school district recieved 1.4 billion dollars of covid relief money. The teachers union skimmed 77% off for themselves in raises and bonuses. Many weren't even showing up for work, they were having other teachers clocking in for them. As you know, Chicago School district is one of the worst for reading scores.

Don't get me wrong, while I applaud teacher's unions work (down here, where I am most educated on their practices), I won't say they've always stood on the side of students, particularly when forces have risen up against their working contracts. But it isn't that they have a stake in the agendas at large that I take issue with. Just like I don't care if African American interests push them to want their children (or all children) to learn from their history. That is their agenda and in a democratic society that agenda must be heard and weighed. What bothers me is when there is desire to take away information that helps a state or even district make up their mind on how it wants to educate their kids. I know that this is a fantastical example as the knowledge of that history is so engrained in our culture, but if they actually could erase slavery from our consciousness, there would still be iniquity for our black students in education and the world, we just couldn't come together to point out why it happened or to decide together how to fix it.

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is not being taught other than in law school. CRT is not part of the high school AP African American Studies course. The fact that CRT was removed as mandatory (and made optional) from the AP African American Studies course proves that Critical Race Theory is correct.

It is impossible to stall the learning of history today. Everything is available through the internet. As a septuagenerian I have learn more about the world and the history than at anytime in my lifetime. No one can go backward and nothing can be covered up.
That's perhaps factual to a point. But universities ARE a place for advancing knowledge, and any attempt to ban books and "critical" teachings should certainly not be swept under the rug. Have we learned anything at all from the beginning of Nazi'ism in Germany and its evil spread?

As Prof. Crenshaw points out, this is a step on that road.

I'm white but I would love to be able to take these kinds of classes without them being watered down. I can't afford college and I'm 57 and disabled but I watch as much free teaching as I can find, I really really wish these teachers and professors would teach the real classes for free on TH-cam. I'm a history geek and I have always studied it as much as I can. There are some bad things that happened in our country in the past. We learn from the past to move forward and have a better country and world. We have to stop this stupid division over the color of a person's skin. If you look at a bunch of x-rays the only things you will be able to tell first and foremost male and female, other wise who broke what bones in the past who has more wear and tear on their bones. But you will not be able to KNOW THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN. Stop being idiots people.

Very scary in Florida. One of my best courses at UofF featured readings from Maya Angelou and breaking down the message she was trying to get across. It was truly amazing and allowed me to understand both sides of the issues that still affect us today. Taking this away demonstrates pure ignorance.

I also agree the history is fascinating - But how do you relate that to public ? Btw the best, most coherent definition of critical theory is at the Stanford school's encyclopedia of philosophy.
@mericanmodi8479 There's a dishonesty component, that I find troubling. Crenshaw knows what tenants are in it. She's studied aspects of it for 25+ years. Joy Ried, to a tiny extent, knows what it is. There's aspects of it with a lineage to some very dark parts of history. They never share it with their audience.

Very interesting. Thinking back, I think I was the only one in my entire elementary school who read my entire school library, the local library and started in at the main library. And unfortunately, I think at college, there were not the many students interested in reading all the different libraries available on campus. Unfortunate because all this information is there, if one just visited the sites (online), and opened the books (online). I also used all sorts of different reading lists, such as Harvard reading lists in my Junior High and High school years. Today, those lists are even easier to obtain and those books easier to read.
So much information, so few people who want to learn. Very unfortunate.

Yes! Anyone who's taught truthfully about African American history and culture at the K-12 levels knows there's great interest among all students - including White kids- who desire to understand how "race" became such a divisive issue in our country. All of our youth need to know the truth about our nation's historical devaluing of black lives and how that devaluing, erasure and systemic oppression is alive in all of our institutions, perhaps most especially in employment, in our schools and in the criminal justice system.

I learned CRT in the 80's as a white elementary school kid. I assure you, I didn't "hate my whiteness". I was proud to be educated and to learn the history of America so that we could do things differently. Our kids are white kids who learn CRT in public school. They are educated, empathic, and wise - and have never been made to feel responsible or guilty about white American foundations of enslavement. They are curious, and have incredible ideas for our future.
Crenshaw does explain one thing very clearly, the individual does not count, the collective must be persecuted. Well done.
The history book I had in high school had a drawing of Frederick Douglas that made me think he was white. I didn't learn that he was a Black man until I was in my twenties. I imagine they will do the same thing to MLK and make people think he was white in the future.
If this revised AP African studies class is a product, then Florida's highschool students have have been given a defective product.
As long as the product sells, it is a good product in our system, whether or not it works. That's why we still have sugary cereals on the market. Do they still have commercials that tout such cereals as "part of a healthy breakfast," when the cereal is the only part that isn't healthy in the picture of the breakfast that pops up on the screen? As Mr. Velshi points out, if you can prevent a product from selling, it automatically becomes a bad product to be discontinued. That is the argument being made here: that the College Board made a business decision that has nothing to do with effective vs defective education but only with catering to the opinions of certain politicians and their supporters, who don't prioritize effective teaching and learning.
As a white man, Ms. Crenshaw recalled my exact experience when learning about Critical Race Theory at 5:36 when she describes how an actual understanding of the principle partly exonerates the individual from personal responsibility for the racism that is perpetuated by structures within society, government, and other institutions. At the same time, it focuses a lens on one's own behavior and all of the small unintentional ways that the individual perpetuates the structures. For me, it was a life changing experience that I think about every day and has had a profoundly positive impact on my relationships with everyone I encounter in my daily life.

Would you prefer they be taught in a classroom of many-colored children because "past" discrimination is still relevant and felt by a good chunk of them or would you rather their parents teach them to call people the N word behind closed doors and DeSantis teach them that white supremacists gaining a foothold in our state is totally fine by pointedly not condemning their antics (which has happened repeatedly over the last few years)? More importantly, would you have our young people grow up and become the leaders and forgers of, we hope, a better tomorrow they will one day be without teaching them that society does come with problems like bigotry and racial injustice which they must tackle or gift to their own children?

It's been tried and failed. After George Floyd riots, many cities defunded the police. This led to more dead blacks. Now, all of these cities are rushing to fund police, but it's too late. They followed the lead of a Marxist Organization, BLM to their own demise. Memphis had 302 murders in 2022,none involving police. Where is the outrage?

They were not Harvard grads in the boule class just simple hard working non-whining people who brought me Black dolls and taught us Black history and instilled in us Black pride. Now days we act like we have to beg White people to teach us our history and let them throw in a bunch of stuff that has got absolutely nothing to do with Black history. First, neither would recognize the Republican party of today. They were conservatives. While a few old school Republicans remain, they do not even mean a majority in their own party. Second, shortly after the Civil War the Republicans and Democrats basically switched in terms of what they believed in and stood for. Read more history....
